    Get PDF
The intensive use of chemicals is depleting the soil in Benin, limiting crop yields in general, but in particular vegetable crops and more specifically Corchorus olitorius. This study aims to evaluate the influence of organic fertilizer and tillage on the agro-morphological characteristics of three varieties of corete. A split plot device in 02 repetitions, the main factor of which is the dose of organic fertilizer at 08 levels, was installed at two different sites, one of which is frequently plowed and the other of which has not been exploited during the last 5 years. The data collected during the trial were entered and processed in the Excel 2016 spreadsheet and subjected to various analyses including descriptive statistics, and analysis of variance with the Statitica software. The principal component analysis was performed with R 4.2.1 software and identified characters that are controlled by the treatments applied. The performance of the different varieties was assessed in the different study environments. The results show that soil amendment with varying doses of organic fertilizers associated with soil types improves the agro-morphological parameters of the plant. This combination makes the nutrients available. Thus, organic fertilizer is a significant fertilizer capable of improving soil fertility. The use of organic fertilizers contributes to the improvement of soil status and crop yields through organic fertilization

Aims and Scope: Indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools is crucial, as students spend significant time in school environments in addition to their homes. Epidemiological researches have shown that indoor pollutants are linked to various health and respiratory issues. This paper focuses on investigating the indoor air quality (IAQ) in school buildings in the Argolida sector of the Peloponnese Region in Greece. Methods: The study was conducted in fourteen (14) classrooms across seven (7) school buildings in the Argolida Sector of the Peloponnese Region from March 2022 to May 2023. Physical parameters such as temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH), as well as air pollutants including Carbon monoxide (CO), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and Particulate Matter (PM10, PM2.5) were monitored using the series 500 Portable Air Quality Monitor AeroQual. Measurements were taken for one teaching hour per day in each classroom. Due to governmental measures to protect public health from the spread of COVID-19, some windows and doors in the classrooms were opened during sampling. Findings: The mean temperature and relative humidity inside the classrooms were 22.12 oC and 50.87%, respectively. The overall mean concentrations of air pollutants recorded inside the schools were 691.35 ppm CO2, 0.001 ppm NO2, 9.97 ppm VOCs, 15.7μg/m3 PM10, and 11.4μg/m3 PM2.5. No indoor CO concentration (0 ppm) was detected in any of the classrooms. This study indicated the following: a) the indoor CO2 concentration levels in the schools (100%) were below 1000 ppm, b) in five out of the fourteen classrooms (35.7%) within the school buildings, CO2 concentration levels exceeded 700 ppm, and c) the indoor VOCs levels in the schools (100%) were above 0.8 ppm. Eight classrooms (57.1%) in Argolida’s school buildings had no comfort conditions due to high relative humidity (RH > 50%). Statistically significant differences were found for temperature (p= 0.001), CO2 (p < 0.001), NO2 (p=0.006), and VOCs (p=0.001) between indoor and ambient air. Conclusion: The air quality in school buildings in the Argolida sector was affected by the number of students in a classroom, the ventilation rate, and the school’s equipment. The proximity of schools to central roads and construction activities also affected the concentration of indoor air pollutants. Indoor air pollution (IAP) can pose potential health risks. Developing monitoring systems for measuring indoor pollutants in schools, as well as strategies for controlling and improving IAQ, is essential for public health

The rural sector is one of the most important sectors in Albania, referring to the contribution to economic growth, gross domestic product, and level of employment in the country. Increasing the productivity and performance of agricultural farms, efficiency of resource use, cooperation between small farmers, access to financing, implementation of technology, food quality and safety, are considered some of the main challenges for the sustainable development of this sector. An important instrument to face these challenges is the digitization of this sector, through the use of technology and digital platforms, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness and productivity of agricultural farms. The digitalization process holds the potential to bring about a significant change in how agriculture functions, in terms of tools, technologies, platforms and innovative approaches that support precision agriculture and efficient management of resources, which are essential for agricultural farms in Albania. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to examine the drivers, barriers and impact of digitalization, on the performance of agricultural farms and the sustainable development of the rural sector in our country. In function of the purpose of the study, the questionnaire was designed to collect information from the farmers (interviewers). Based on the data of INSTAT and MARD, for the dominant activities and typology of farms, 938 questionnaires were completed with farmers for the regions selected in the study. The data were analysed and processed with the SPSS program, in accordance with the purpose and research objectives of the study

This article aims to analyze the perception of pastoral fires in the Ihorombe region. This area is home to various ethnic groups from Madagascar, with the Bara being the indigenous  ethnic group, generally known as cattle herders(CREAM, 2013). By definition, pastoral fires or grazing fires are intentionally lit by herders to regenerate pastures or control epizootic parasites (RAKOTONIRINA, 2020). The study employed a survey method using a questionnaire administered to 120 randomly selected individuals from several villages within the Ihorombe region. The data collected were analyzed using XLSTAT software. The analysis of local perceptions revealed that among the five causes of savannah fires, uncontrolled grazing fires are cited as the primary cause of the population. The number of fire points varies with the number of cattle, indicating a correlation between herd size and the number of fire occurrences in the region. The practice of grazing fires is seen as an inevitable tradition among the Bara ethnic group and is even used as a means of land appropriation. Over 50% of respondents acknowledged the importance of fire use on grazing land to promote new growth after rainfall, highlighting the necessity of fire use for pasture improvement. Heteropogon contortus is the preferred plant for cattle and thrives after repeated fires, demonstrating a link between the preferred vegetation and its growth post-fire. The study also identified five perceived disadvantages of pasture fires, with drought and scarce rainfall being noted by 66% and 44% of respondents, respectively, who also perceive climate change. Seven adaptation strategies for combating uncontrolled grazing fires were documented, with evening fires at 7 pm and seeking assistance to extinguish fires being the most recognized among the local population

At Architecture Schools, it is commonly observed that they develop projects which are rather unengaged and isolated from the community, thus generating disconnection between educational practices and the population. In this article, a Project Development Methodology is proposed linking the community with development of projects framed within University Social Responsibility. Using descriptive and transversal methodology, the current situation of project methodologies and social responsibility are studied through the analysis of background information, theories, and approaches of a number of authors. Additionally, by means of a mixed method including surveys and interviews, engagement between relevant parties of the educational process and the community is assessed. The findings confirm there is a low level of engagement between the population and project methodologies, as these latter fulfill their pedagogical function, but producing no contribution of social value. The goal is to present a Project Development Methodology proposal, engaged to the University Social Responsibility, oriented to offering solutions to the needs of the population and thus generate a positive impact over the community. The results obtained have been methodologically validated and considered relevant for their application in the field of research, social responsibility, and project development

Autobiographical narrations of sexual harassment on online blogs as tools for Egyptian women’s empowerment: a linguistic and critical analysis

    Get PDF
Sexual violence against women is still a global and pervasive problem (International Institute for Global Health, 2019), especially in male-controlled countries like Egypt. These days, an increasing number of Egyptian women is using autobiographical narrations on online blogs to condemn negative ideologies and misogynist practices in their society, denouncing episodes of sexual harassment that they have experienced or witnessed. In this study, it has been observed how they use language on blogs to recount their own experiences of sexual abuse. A sample of five autobiographies retrieved from the Egyptian blog Speak Up has been selected for the purpose of this investigation. These stories have been linguistically and critically analysed through Halliday’s functional grammar (2014) and a Critical Discourse Analysis (Machin & Mayr, 2023), more specifically a Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (Lazar, 2007), with the aim of observing how personal female identities and empowerment are performed through this form of first-person narration (Lazar, 2006; Bamberg, 2010; Schiffrin et al., 2010). A special focus has been on verbal and semiotic choices, which suggest agency, transitivity, and power relationships, and on appraisal elements which give information about the narrators’ “feelings and opinions” (Derewianka & Jones, 2016, p. 25). The analysis has proved to be useful in showing how these Egyptian women narrators consciously or unconsciously present themselves as “empowered victims”

    Get PDF
Globalization has led exporting companies to design and implement strategies to increase their presence in international markets; however, it is necessary to have a greater understanding of the factors that determine the level of internationalization, since literature alone does not provide sufficient and specific information for decision-making. The objective is to determine which variables predict the level of internationalization of Mexican export companies, by validating a random sample with 119 export companies from the state of Sonora. The methodology was descriptive with a quantitative approach. The information was processed and analyzed in the SPSS program using the ordinal logistic regression model. The results support that the price of the product, the installed capacity, and the commercial agreements are significant variables that directly predict the level of internationalization of companies, concluded that they are important for the growth, diversification, and permanence of an international market to implement mechanisms to improve exports by their resources and capacities. This can be taken up again in subsequent studies and a practical sense in the exporting companies by promoting exporters' actions that encourage new procedures, processes, and products that allow a monetary impact on them

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between family factors, self-esteem and drug addictions among adolescent patients at the Blue Cross Center in Côte d'Ivoire. For this purpose, 35 participants, male and female, aged 17 to 19 years, who had at least consumed drugs during the last 12 months, were selected. Data were obtained using the medical consultation record, the Robinson & al (2001) parenting style scale, the Coopersmith (1984) self-esteem scale, the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10) for the diagnosis of addictions and an interview guide. The chi-square analysis carried out on the data collected suggests a simple and interactive relationship between democratic parenting style, high self-esteem and drug-related addictive behaviors among adolescents in Abidjan compared to permissive parenting style and low self-esteem. These results are in line with Bowlby's attachment theories (1988), Peele’s psychosocial theories (1985), and psychological models of addictions. This study, with a view to providing an explanation of drug addictions in relation to the social context and the intrinsic characteristics of adolescents, could contribute to raising parents' awareness of the use of stimulating educational practices for the optimal development of their children and thus keep them away from practices likely to cause them harm
