The economic and social transformation generated by infrastructure projects, such as the Mayan Train, has impacted microenterprises in the municipality of Escárcega, Campeche. Given this scenario, a need to strengthen the link between the Administration program and local development was identified. The objective of this study was to analyze how professional training in administration can contribute to the strengthening of microenterprises in the face of structural changes in their environment. A structured survey was administered to 23 companies. Local owners and workers were interviewed to identify needs, problems, and perceptions of graduates from this program. The results reveal that, while they recognize certain impacts on their businesses, most do not hire administrative services for economic reasons or a lack of business culture, which can often be interpreted as distrust due to the graduates' lack of experience. However, they will accept free advice through professional residencies. The conclusion is that there is a significant opportunity to integrate academic strategies with business practices that drive sustainable local development
Faced with rapid and often uncontrolled urbanization, cities in Central Africa are undergoing profound changes in their mobility systems. This article analyzes traffic and travel dynamics in three capitals in the subregion: Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Douala (Cameroon), and Brazzaville (Republic of Congo). This document shows how urban organization, forms of informality, and public policies influence daily mobility practices and traffic conditions. In this research, we used a comparative approach and a mixed methodology with field surveys conducted by three investigators under our supervision in three major cities (n = 750 users surveyed, 300, 250, 200). We conducted semi-structured interviews with transport stakeholders (drivers, local authorities, unions) and made direct observations of travel practices (routes, schedules, modes used) in the cities studied. These modes include shared taxis, motorcycle taxis, and minibusses. The average commute time is 1 hour and 45 minutes in Kinshasa, 1 hour and 15 minutes in Douala, and 1 hour in Brazzaville. In Kinshasa, the modal split is 40% walking, 50% informal transport, and 10% private vehicles. Limited access to formal transport in outlying neighborhoods means that 75% of residents rely exclusively on walking or motorcycle taxis. Inequalities in access to mobility: 60% of women report feeling unsafe when using transportation. The elderly and disabled are largely excluded from transportation systems. The state of road infrastructure in Kinshasa is 25% paved roads, in the city of Douala it is 35%, and in Brazzaville it is 28%. In terms of urban congestion, Kinshasa loses approximately $150 million per year in productivity due to traffic jams (World Bank, 2023). In terms of weak public policies, less than 1.5% of municipal budgets are devoted to mobility, and there is a lack of coordination between stakeholders (up to five different institutions without synergy). This article proposes several avenues for improvement in the short, medium, and long term through the recognition and regulation of informal transport with the implementation of licensing systems, driver training, and gradual integration into urban transport policies. The development of appropriate infrastructure with asphalting and maintenance of secondary roads, the creation of dedicated lanes for public transport (BRT, articulated buses), and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The promotion of inclusive mobility. Strategic planning and integrated governance. Digital innovation and smart flow management. This article also highlighted that urban mobility in Central Africa is at a crossroads: between resourcefulness and disorganization, but also between local resilience and opportunities for innovation. Improving mobility in these cities requires an integrated, inclusive, and sustainable approach, mobilizing institutional actors, users, and the private sector
Situated at the crossroads of socio-anthropology and the sociology of international relations, this reflection examines the contribution of cross-border marriages to the construction of sub-regional integration in Central Africa. Taking form within the border areas of northern and southern Cameroon, it is based on the main conjecture that these cross-border unions, as symbols, contribute in many ways to transcending the land borders between Cameroon and its neighbors. To demonstrate this, a methodological framework structured around interviews and observations has been implemented in certain border localities of the Ntem Valley department in southern Cameroon and those of the Mayo-Rey department in the northern region. The primary data collected has been supplemented by so-called secondary data. The exploitation of the latter has primarily been illuminated in the light of transnationalism as a theoretical approach. From this, it emerges that beyond the specificities related to marriage practices among the Mboum and Ekang border communities that structure these spaces, cross-border marriages taking place from these areas have multiple impacts on the dynamics of sub-regional integration in Central Africa. They thus prove to be instruments for strengthening and deepening bonds of solidarity and fraternity between local border populations and those of neighboring countries. Considering the sociological and socio-anthropological realities that cross the countries making up the sub-region would make the actions of policymakers more effective. For, beyond integrating states, regional integration also aims to integrate people
Coastal erosion is a major geomorphological issue along the Senegalese coastline, where the shoreline retreats at an average rate of approximately 1 m/year. In Rufisque, the morpho-sedimentary dynamics of the beaches, shaped by complex interactions between natural processes and increasing anthropogenic pressures, generate significant environmental and socio-economic impacts. This study examines the environmental and socio-economic consequences of coastal erosion along the Rufisque shoreline. The analysis draws on a combination of field observations and geospatial data derived from remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In situ observations were used to document the direct effects of coastal transformations on ecosystems and shoreline uses, whereas the processing of Landsat satellite imagery (30 m) enabled the spatial and temporal mapping of coastal changes and the quantification of shoreline mobility rates (1979-2024). The results reveal pronounced coastal erosion, with an average shoreline retreat of 0.39 m/year across the Rufisque and Thiawlène sectors over the past 45 years. This sustained process is accompanied by increasing environmental degradation and socio-economic disruptions, affecting infrastructures and human activities throughout the city of Rufisque
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly disrupted global health systems, leading to increased reliance on endogenous resources, particularly traditional pharmacopoeia, in several regions of the world. This ethnobotanical study was conducted in Lower Guinea to document medicinal plants traditionally used in the traditional management of symptoms associated with Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). It was carried out between May 2020 and June 2021 in five prefectures (Boké, Boffa, Fria, Dubréka, and Kindia), and allowed 302 traditional therapists from the local community to be interviewed. The results reveal a predominance of monotherapy in practices, followed by dual therapy. A total of 94 plant species were recorded and formally identified. Alchornea cordifolia (Schumach. & Thonn.) Müll.Arg. was the most frequently cited. The most represented family was Fabaceae (20 species), followed by Malvaceae (9 species), and then Apocynaceae, Moraceae, and Rubiaceae (5 species each). Recipes were mainly administered orally (66.5%), and preferred preparation methods included decoction, maceration, and infusion. Phytochemical screening carried out on alcoholic leaf extracts revealed the presence of polyphenols (flavonoids, tannins, and proanthocyanidins) known for their antiviral properties. Bio-guided fractionation of polar extracts is underway to isolate bioactive molecules and evaluate their therapeutic potential against SARS-CoV-2. This study highlights the importance of traditional knowledge in the context of the response to COVID-19 and opens up promising prospects for the development of phytomedicines
Challenges in Cloud Computing Adoption for SMEs in the Middle East
Technology's growth significantly affects how businesses grow because it offers new ways to do business. Due to a sharp rise in market competition and a rapidly changing business environment, businesses in all industries and sectors utilize information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enhance their company operations and boost their value. This study aims to address the challenges that prevent small and medium-sized businesses in the Middle East from adopting cloud computing, as well as the generally accepted techniques for eliminating these challenges. The study utilized a systematic review of relevant literature. The inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as the analytic procedure, were documented in the study using the PRISMA protocol. The study also looked for pertinent journal publications that employed mixed, qualitative, and quantitative research methodologies using three pertinent databases: Sustainability, Google Scholar, and Emerald. The included English-language publications had to have been released between the first quarter of 2023 and 2016. More significantly, the evaluation did not include any research that did not concentrate on SMEs in the Middle East. Following an extensive analysis of the literature, it was discovered, among other things that infra needs to be more, budgetary restrictions, and a need for increased understanding of the significance of Industry 4.0. In conclusion, SMEs face challenges in adopting cloud computing, including financial constraints, restrictive policies, security concerns, and fear of losing investments in existing infrastructure, amongst others. Addressing these issues through policy changes, competition, and tailored solutions can enhance cloud adoption and SME competitiveness

AI-based Machine Translations in Tourism and Hospitality: An Exploratory Study of Travelers’ Perceptions and Future Challenges
With the progress of AI-driven technologies, machine translation has significantly impacted tourists' travel experiences by transforming how they engage with or interpret language at their destinations. However, the body of empirical literature on the benefits, obstacles, and future prospects of these emerging technologies in tourism and hospitality is yet to be fully explored. This study aims to explore and outline 320 travelers' perceptions of machine translation. A distinctive sample of Italian travelers, along with their current and potential customers in the digital environment, is analyzed. Descriptive statistics was used to present the number and main characteristics of travelers‘ perceptions about AI-based machine translators. Travelers were grouped into two clusters based on perceived benefits and implementation challenges. Our findings contribute to the growing literature on AI-based machine translators and offer practical insights by mapping the benefits, challenges, outlook, and maturity levels of machine translations. The results provide both theoretical and practical insights for improving the use of AI-based machine translations and their role in tourism and hospitality industries. This is among the first studies exploring the tourism and hospitality approaches adopted by travelers to manage their interactions with AI-based machine translations while traveling abroad
New Challenges in ELT (English Language Teaching): Virtual Exchange and Mobility
The present study focuses on an experience of ELT through a recent virtual exchange and mobility project, called ITALengUSA. The project aimed to foster connections between Italian and American students from different universities and high schools in Italy and in the USA, with the purpose of enhancing their proficiency in Italian and English. The work begins with an analysis of the paremiological resources employed during the speaking sessions of the project, as the syntactic and prosodic features of idioms and proverbs facilitated the students’ learning process. Owing to their culture-bound nature, paremiological resources were extensively used to engage and motivate students, helping them to improve their target language through metaphors and cultural aspects (Gedik, 2024; Granger & Meunier, 2008; Russo, 2024). After investigating the learning methods used by students, including cooperative learning, scaffolding and languaging (Nicaise, 2022), the analysis dwells on the effectiveness of translanguaging (Kramsch & Hua, 2016), which involves the practice of using more than one language in conversations. Translanguaging enabled the students of the project to integrate terms from their L1 into conversations occurring in L2, allowing them to co-construct meanings with their partners through linguistic negotiation and reformulation. Considering Coonan’s (2011) concept of “international posture”, the work concludes by discussing the incorporation of cultural aspects in the speaking sessions of the programme, drawing comparisons between Americanness, associated with globalisation and multiculturalism by Italian students, and Italianness, associated with art and culture by American students. The ITALengUSA programme, which is expanding and involving an increasing number of educational institutions in Italy and in the USA, has thus paved the way for the democratisation of language learning through collaboration with native speaker students (Novak & Tucker, 2021)
Metsovo Lung: History of Population Environmental Exposure to Asbestos
Objectives: Our aim is to review all the literature concerning Metsovo Lung as an emblematic story that demonstrates the strong relationship between non-occupational but environmental and ecological exposure to asbestos and lung diseases. Materials and Methods: We searched data from the 1970s when extensive pleural calcifications causing malignant mesothelioma appeared at a high incidence beyond expectation. The most reliable studies were selected for our research from 2017-2023. Results: There wasn’t occupational exposure in Epirus. This finding reasonably raised the question of whether it was indeed tuberculous pleurisy or something else. The biopsies carried out confirmed that these were tremolite asbestos fibers. These fibers were derived from ‘luto’, a water-shielding material containing asbestos. The entire population of Metsovo was exposed to asbestos, without knowing it. This is a global phenomenon, according to which, it is made from a traditional shielding material. The abandonment of ‘luto’ and its non-use brought about a gradual reduction of the phenomenon, which also marks the reduction of mesothelioma. Conclusion: Lessons learned from the history of Metsovo lung showed the importance of the combination of theory and practice in the context of nonoccupational exposure to asbestos. From a public health point of view, it's crucial to know whether exposure to low levels of asbestos is able to induce pleural mesothelioma
