    LIFETIME ANALYSIS AT HIGH INTENSITY COLLIDERS APPLIED TO THE LHC

    Abstract The beam lifetime is one of the main parameters to define the performance of a collider. In a super-conducting machine like the LHC, the lifetime determines the intensity reach for a given collimation cleaning. The beam lifetime can be calculated from the direct measurement of beam current. However, due to the noise in the beam current signal only an average lifetime over several seconds can be calculated. We propose here an alternative method, which uses the signal of the beam loss monitors in the vicinity of the primary collimators to get the instantaneous beam lifetime at the collimators. In this paper we compare the lifetime from the two methods and investigate the minimum lifetime over the LHC cycle for all the physics fills in 2011 and 2012.     ABsTRAcT Background: Assam, with its capital in Dispur has one of the highest rates of infant and maternal mortality in India. Being under both tribal and hilly regions, it has lacked adequate healthcare and emergency services. We therefore aimed to conduct a cross-sectional survey of medical emergencies and identify various types of emergencies presenting to emergency departments, prior to launching emergency services across the state. Materials and Methods: On a prospective basis and using a stratified random sampling design, all emergencies presenting to the three government hospitals in Guwahati, Assam, which handle 90% of all emergencies currently, were studied on specially designed datasheets in order to collect data. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) were placed in the Casualty of the medical colleges and recorded all emergencies on the datasheet. The collected data was then analysed for stratification and mapping of emergencies. In addition, retrospective data for a period of 15 days was collected from the emergency case registers of all three hospitals and the adjoining district civil hospitals, in order to give a wider perspective of the nature of emergencies. Results: A total of 2169 emergencies were recorded over a seven-day prospective and fifteen-day retrospective period. Guwahati Medical College Hospital attended to majority of emergencies (42%), which were mainly of the nature of pregnancies (22.7%), accidents (12.2%) or assaults (15.4%) and fever related. Maximum emergencies also presented from the border districts, and occurred among young males in the age group of 19-45 years. Males were also more prone to accidents and assaults, while females presented with pregnancies as emergencies. Conclusion: Potential emergency services need to target young pregnant females. Law and order needs to be also tightened in order to curb accidents and assaults among young males

    An RT±DIAPOPS (reverse transcription±detection of immobilized, amplified product in a one-phase system) assay was developed for the detection of potato virus Y (PVY). The sensitivity of the assay was 0´5 pg when virions were added directly to the RT reaction. The assay was capable of detecting all isolates investigated, representing several taxonomic groups of PVY. The RT±DIAPOPS offers an attractive alternative to RT±polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as it does not depend on gel electrophoresis to detect virus-specific PCR products.     Background. -Synuclein (SNCA) and microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) are the two major genes independently, but not jointly, associated with susceptibility for Parkinson's disease (PD). The SNCA gene has recently been identified as a major modifier of age of PD onset. Whether MAPT gene synergistically influences age of onset of PD is unknown. Objective. To investigate independent and joint effects of MAPT and SNCA on PD onset age. Methods. 412 patients with PD were recruited from the Australian PD Research Network (123) and the Neurology Department, Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, China (289). MAPT (rs17650901) tagging H1/H2 haplotype and SNCA (Rep1) were genotyped in the Australian cohort, and MAPT (rs242557, rs3744456) and SNCA (rs11931074, rs894278) were genotyped in the Chinese cohort. SPSS regression analysis was used to test genetic effects on age at onset of PD in each cohort. Results. SNCA polymorphisms associated with the onset age of PD in both populations. MAPT polymorphisms did not enhance such association in either entire cohort. Conclusion. This study suggests that, in both ethnic groups, SNCA gene variants influence the age at onset of PD and -synuclein plays a key role in the disease course of PD

    ABSTRACT. The paper shows a general model of the internal structure of mouthparts in Fulgoroidea (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha), in cross-section through the subapical segment of rostrum. The study comprised 10 representatives of 8 various planthopper families. This is a comparative analysis of the connecting systems between right and left maxillae in Fulgoroidea. In the internal structure of mouthparts, three locks between maxillae have been identified: dorsal, middle and ventral. Straight, hooked and T-shaped processes form these locks. In all examined representatives of various families, the shape of the processes in corresponding locks is the same. A stable number of processes in particular locks have been observed in studied representatives of Fulgoromorpha families (dorsal lock -4, middle lock -3, ventral lock -2). The food and salivary canals are formed by both maxillae. In the examined species the closure of the salivary canal is similar at the family level. The interlocking mechanism between right and left maxillae is the same in representatives of various families. Mandibles in Fulgoroidea are not firmly connected with maxillae but only contiguous with their external wall

    Reconstructive Surgery Buccal Mucosal Graft in Repeat Urethroplasty

    ABSTRACT Introduction: Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of a tubed buccal mucosal graft in repeat urethroplasty for patients with urethral stricture and failed previous operations. Materials and Methods: Ten patients (aged 12 to 47 years) with urethral stricture were entered into the study. All had a history of failed previous urethroplasties, and 5 had failed internal urethrotomies, too. Repeat urethroplasties were performed by excising the fibrous tissue around the stricture; buccal mucosa was then harvested from the inner cheek, made into graft tubing, and interposed into the defect. The patients were followed at 1, 6, and 12 months. Results: The procedure was technically successful in all the patients. The mean operative time was 150 minutes. The stricture sites were in the posterior urethra in 8 and the anterior urethra in 2 patients. The mean urethral defect length was 4.9 cm. The primary etiology was pelvic fracture in 7 patients. Strictures recurred postoperatively in 3 patients, all of whom had a urethral defect longer than 5 cm, and 2 of whom had more than 1 previous failed urethroplasties (compared with 1 out of 7 in the successful cases). Urinary flow rate increased significantly (from 0 to 10.4 ± 7.33 mL/s) postoperatively (P = .018). Longer strictures produced signifcantly poorer graft urethroplasty outcomes (P = .001). Conclusion: Urethroplasty with buccal mucosal grafts is tough, resilient, easy to harvest, and leaves no scar. It appears to be an optimal substitute for anterior and posterior urethral strictures longer than 3 cm

    How much of DSRC is available for non-safety use

    ABSTRACT The Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology is currently being standardized by the IEEE to enable a range of communication-based automotive safety applications. However, for DSRC to be cost-effective, it is important to accommodate commercial non-safety use of the spectrum as well. The co-existence of safety and non-safety is achieved through a periodic channel switching scheme whereby access to DSRC alternates between these two classes of applications. In this paper, we propose a framework that links the non-safety share of DSRC as effected by the channel switching to the performance requirements of safety applications. Using simulation experiments, we analyze the nonsafety opportunity in the DSRC under varied road traffic conditions. We find that non-safety use of DSRC may have to be severely restricted during peak hours of traffic to insure that automotive safety is not compromised. Our study also provides interesting insights into how simple strategies, e.g., optimizing the message generation rate of the safety applications, can significantly increase the commercial opportunities of DSRC. Finally, we find that adaptive schemes that can dynamically adjust the switching parameters in response to observed traffic conditions may help in maximizing the commercial use of DSRC
