Locating widows in mid-nineteenth century Pictou County, Nova Scotia
Abstract This article takes up the challenge of how to begin to include women in the historical geography of the Maritimes. It makes an intervention through a case study of the place of widows in one mid-19th century county in Nova Scotia. For women, widowhood was a life-phase of conflicting emotions, replete with the contradiction that came from the loss of a patriarch. While it offered potential freedom, widowhood could also signal uncertainty, and often, dependence. The cultural identity and economic and legal treatment of widows represented a strongly patriarchal age in which the doctrines of a 'cult of domesticity' and an ideology of 'separate spheres' influenced the life-course of widows. Spatial change often accompanied widowhood, with widows moving into a room in their old house, or to a new location.

High-current density DC magenetohydrodynamics micropump with bubble isolation and release system
Abstract One of the major challenges for integrated Labon-a-Chip (LOC) systems is the precise control of fluid flow in a micro-flow cell. Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) micropumps which contain no moving parts and capable of generating a continuous flow in any ionic fluid offer an ideal solution for biological applications. MHD micropumping has been demonstrated by using both AC and direct current (DC) currents by a number of researchers with varying degrees of success. However, current MHD designs based on DC do not meet the flow rate requirements for fully automated LOC applications ([100 ll/ min). In this research, we introduce a novel DC-based MHD micropump which effectively increases flow rate by limiting the effects of electrolysis generated bubbles at the electrode-electrolyte interface through isolation and a mechanism for their release. Gas bubbles, particularly, hydrogen generated by high current density at the electrodes are the main culprit in low experimental flow rate compared with theoretical values. These tiny bubbles coalesce in the flow channel thus obstructing the flow of fluid. Since hydrolysis is inevitable with DC excitation, compartmentalized electrode channels with bubble isolating and coalescence retarding mechanisms and bubble release systems are implemented to prevent the coalescence of these bubbles and minimize their effects on flow rate. In this novel design called bubble isolation and release system, flow rate of up to 325 ll/min is achieved using 1 M NaCl solution in DC mode with potentials of 5 V and current density of about 5,000 A/m 2 for a main channel of 800 lm 9 800 lm cross-section and 6.4 mm length
IMPLEMENTATION OF MULTIPLE STATIC AND MOBILE SINK NODES FOR ENERGY BALANCING IN SENSOR NETWORKS
Abstract-Wireless sensor consists of spatially distributed autonomous sensors. Sensors are equipped with tiny irreplaceable batteries and it is very difficult to recharge them and sensors are more prone to hotspot phenomenon .These decreases the network lifetime so it is utmost important to design energy efficient algorithm to prolong network lifetime. The influence of multiple static sink nodes on energy consumption under different scale networks is first studied and CAMu-S (Clustering Algorithm for Multi Sink) is proposed and tested. Then, the influence of mobile sink velocity, position and number on network performance is studied and CAMo-S (Clustering Algorithm for Mobile Sink) is proposed and tested. Then by implementation of both static and multiple mobile sink nodes simultaneously is studied and a Clustering Algorithm for Static and Multi-mobile-sink (CASM) algorithm is proposed. Disasters in Personal Informatics: The Unpublished Stories of Failure and Lessons Learned ACM Classification Keywords
Abstract Though never a desirable outcome, failure is an inevitable part of research. Too often, however, the tried but failed paths are lost in the translation of work to publication. With the pragmatics of publishing (e.g., page limits) and the academic emphasis on positive outcomes, failed processes, methodologies, study designs, and technologies are frequently not disclosed. This is a missed opportunity, particularly for nascent areas like Personal Informatics (PI) as well as other research areas, more generally, that share high costs in time, development, and recruitment for building and deploying testable systems. Thus, we propose a UbiComp2014 workshop focused on failures in PI research. Through short participant authored papers, breakout sessions, madness talks, and all-group discussions, our overarching workshop goals are to share "disaster" stories, reflect on lessons learned, and articulate promising paths forward
Article MIG-10/Lamellipodin and AGE-1/PI3K Promote Axon Guidance and Outgrowth in Response to Slit and Netrin
Summary Background: The cytoplasmic C. elegans protein MIG-10 affects cell migrations and is related to mammalian proteins that bind phospholipids and Ena/VASP actin regulators. In cultured cells, mammalian MIG-10 promotes lamellipodial growth and Ena/VASP proteins induce filopodia. Results: We show here that during neuronal development, mig-10 and the C. elegans Ena/VASP homolog unc-34 cooperate to guide axons toward UNC-6 (netrin) and away from SLT-1 (Slit). The single mutants have relatively mild phenotypes, but mig-10; unc-34 double mutants arrest early in development with severe axon guidance defects. In axons that are guided toward ventral netrin, unc-34 is required for the formation of filopodia and mig-10 increases the number of filopodia. In unc-34 mutants, developing axons that lack filopodia are still guided to netrin through lamellipodial growth. In addition to its role in axon guidance, mig-10 stimulates netrin-dependent axon outgrowth in a process that requires the age-1 phosphoinositide-3 lipid kinase but not unc-34
