Effect of Lactoperoxidase activation on the keeping quality of raw milk kept at refrigeration temperature
ABSTRACT Effect of different levels of sodium thiocynate and sodium percarbonate for activation of lactoperoxidase system on keeping quality of raw cow ' s milk at refrigeration temperature was studied. The milk was collected directly from the dairy farm, Faculty of Animal Production Science and Technology, the study was conducted during February-march 2012. Three levels of sodium thiocynate and sodium percarbonate (12, 16, 20 and 20, 30 40 mg/L) were used respectively. The samples were activated at about 30 min. after morning milking then stored at 4°C for 7 days. Titratable acidity % (TA), milk composition and total bacterial counts were evaluated. The results indicated that the keeping quality of activated milk samples were improved compared with that of control. The results showed that significant variations were observed between the activated and control samples. Whereas, the control milk samples were clearly deteriorated in quality at about 5th day of storage,. Also the results revealed that no significant differences in milk composition (fat, protein, density and total solid) was observed among control and activated milk samples. Abstract: Across many cities of the so-called Global South, the primary responsibility for constructing spaces of inhabitation has fallen largely to residents themselves. Although these cities have been largely remade through the intensive segregations precipitated by property markets, many substantial traces of the continuous incremental renovations and readjustment of everyday life remain vital. It was not just a matter of households building their own homes. Affordability meant density. Densification was not just of bodies of techniques necessary to provide an array of affordances. This meant the intermixing of measures, angles, calculations, impulses, screens, surfaces, soundscapes, exposures, folds, circuitries, and layers, as instruments for associating things, bringing things into association, where things get their 'bearings' by having a 'bearing' on each other. But these associations required their own rhythm and time. Focusing on different heterogeneous districts in inner city Jakarta, the paper explores these mixtures of temporality and how they are materialized in local built and economic environments. This is particularly the case for residents living in rapidly expanding urban mega-regions where complex rearrangements of life outpace the ability of policy-makers and institutions to always manage these transformations. The bulk of these assumptions centres on various organizational imaginaries -that is, the capacities of residents to organize in ways that identify and secure their collective interests and rights. Effect of Short-Term Phytoestrogen Treatment in Male Rats on Nitric Oxide-Mediated Responses of Carotid and Cerebral Arteries: Comparison with 17-Estradiol
ABSTRACT The use of estrogen for protection against vascular dysfunction is limited due to its effects on the reproductive system, particularly in males. We postulated that daidzein, an isoflavone with estrogen-like effects on the systemic vasculature but not the reproductive system, might enhance nitric oxide (NO)-mediated cerebral vasodilatation. Male rats were administered vehicle, 17-estradiol (0.1 mg/kg s.c.), or daidzein (0.2 mg/kg s.c.) daily for 7 days. Basal and acetylcholine-stimulated NO release was assessed in vitro via carotid arterial rings or in vivo by measuring changes in basilar artery diameter. Levels of protein expression of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), caveolin-1, and calmodulin were assessed in carotid arteries using Western analysis. Plasma NO levels were doubled by daidzein or 17-estradiol. NO production and endothelium-dependent contraction in response to the NOS inhibitor N G -nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA; 100 M) was enhanced by 50 to 100% in carotid arteries from rats treated with daidzein or 17-estradiol. Acetylcholineinduced relaxation was selectively enhanced in carotid arteries from rats treated with daidzein. Similarly, constrictor responses of the basilar artery to L-NNA in vivo were selectively augmented by ϳ100% by 17-estradiol treatment and tended to be ϳ50% greater in daidzein-treated rats. Expression of caveolin-1 was decreased, and calmodulin was increased, in vessels from daidzein-or 17-estradiol-treated rats. eNOS expression was unaffected by the treatments. These data suggest that short-term administration of daidzein or 17-estradiol modulates cerebral artery reactivity in males by enhancing synthesis and release of endothelium-derived NO. Isoflavone therapy may therefore be a feasible approach to protect against cerebrovascular disease and stroke

Abstract We design a numerical algorithm for simulation of low-frequency electric-signal transmission through a drill string. This is represented by a transmission line with varying geometrical and electromagnetic properties versus depth, depending on the characteristics of the drill-string/formation system. These properties are implicitly modeled by the series impedance and the shunt admittance of the transmission line. The differential equations are parabolic, since at low frequencies the wave field is diffusive. We use an explicit scheme for the solution of parabolic problems, based on a Chebyshev expansion of the evolution operator and the Fourier pseudospectral method to compute the spatial derivatives. The results are verified by comparison to analytical solutions obtained for the initial-value problem with a voltage source
Modelling System Administration Problems with CSPs
Abstract System administrators increasingly use declarative, objectoriented languages to configure their systems. Introducing constraints to such a language and automatically generating a valid system configuration is an area of active research. We describe our work towards creating ConfSolve, an object-oriented configuration language which can describe constraints over valid configurations, solution of which is provided by compilation into a CSP. We evaluate our solution against a simple virtual machine allocation problem, with promising results for automating Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) systems

ABSTRACT Rectal prolapse is not uncommon in young children, and is usually a self limited condition. Recurrent rectal prolapse not responding to conservative management requires surgical intervention. Using posterior sagittal approach, levator repair and rectal suspension was done in 35 patients over a period of 8 years at our Paediatric Surgical Department. Median age of the patients was 4.5 years. Post operatively 5 patients had mild mucosal prolapse and 3 had wound infection. None of the patient had recurrence
