    SERUM COPPER CONCENTRATION IN NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS PREGNANCIES IN GORGAN-NORTHERN IRAN: A CASE CONTROL STUDY

    ABSTRACT Objectives: To determine an association between copper deficiency and neural tube defects in Northern Iran, which is reported to have a high prevalence of neural tube defects. Methodology: This hospital based case control study was conducted on 13 mothers with newborns having neural tube defects and 35 healthy controls mothers in Northern Iran during [2005][2006]. Serum copper was measured by spectrophotometery. Results: Serum copper level in mothers with NTD affected newborns and mothers with normal newborns was 15.9±6.1 micromol/litter and 15.2±6.2 micromol/litter, respectively. Overall 15.4% of mothers in case group and 25.7 % of mothers in control group had copper deficiency. Logistic regression analysis showed no association between the presence of NTD and copper deficiency (OR =0.5, 95% Cl: 0.05-3.2). Conclusion: This study showed that there is no association between the presence of neural tube defects (NTD) and copper deficiency

ABS TRACT Background: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of alexithymia on sleep quality and tendency to somatization in patients with depression. Methods: Eighty-five patients with depression, who applied to the outpatient unit of psychiatry, were included in the study. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), Symptom Interpretation Questionnaire (SIQ), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were administered to the patients. Results: Depressive patients were divided into two groups: alexithymic patients and non-alexithymic patients. There were significant differences in scores of BDI, psychologizing and somatizing subscale of the SIQ and daytime dysfunction subscale of the PSQI in alexithymic patients. Conclusion: It was found that depressive patients have higher levels of alexithymic features and somatization tendencies in this study. Moreover, alexithymic patients have more frequent psychological and somatic attributions and increased loss of daytime functionality.     Transcript accumulation of putative drought responsive genes in drought-stressed chickpea seedlings

    ABSTRACT Differential display reverse transcriptase PCR was used to identify cDNA sequences induced by drought in chickpea seedlings. The sequences of differentially expressed cDNAs: 192, 214, 219 and H1 showed high similarities at the protein level to known drought-inducible genes encoding for alanine aminotransferase, βAKIN1, a proteine kinase from the SnRK1 complex, lipid binding protein and COR protein, respectively. No significant similarity was found with the candidate sequence 277. Semiquantitative multiplex PCR was used to verify that differentially amplified cDNAs were derived from differentially expressed genes. Relative quantification of the candidate sequences in the controls (wellwatered seedlings) of drought-tolerant cv. ICCV2 and drought-susceptible cv. ILC3279 confirmed their induction upon drought in both cultivars. The transcript accumulation of the highly induced sequences, 219 and H1, was more important in the tolerant than the susceptible cultivar. These sequences are likely to be associated with drought tolerance in chickpea seedlings in contrast to sequences 214 and 277 which showed no variation in the mRNA accumulation between cultivars. The effect of ABA treatment on the mRNA accumulation of the isolated sequences 192, 214, 219 and H1 was analyzed. Sequences H1 and 192 were up-regulated by ABA treatment whereas sequences 214 and 219 were not, indicating an ABAdependent and ABA-independent pathways in signal transduction in response to drought stress in chickpea seedlings

    Gracilinanus emiliae (DIDELPHIMORPHIA: DIDELPHIDAE: THYLAMYINI)

    ABSTRACT: Gracilinanus emiliae is a species of gracile mouse opossum that is currently known from fewer than a dozen specimens. The material we examined exhibits a distinctive suite of external and craniodental characters that are unlike those of any other congeneric species. We review all published records for G. emiliae, several of which are based on misidentifications or lost material, and we report a new specimen from northeastern Peru, the first to be recorded from that country, and the first to be unequivocally associated with primary lowland rain forest. The available distributional data suggest that G. emiliae (or a complex of cryptic taxa with the same morphological characters) is very widely distributed in Amazonia and perhaps also in Venezuelan coastal rain forests. Phylogenetic analyses of morphological and molecular data suggest that G. emiliae is the sister taxon to other analyzed species of Gracilinanus, the biogeographic history of which is likely to be complex. RESUMEN: Sobre los caracteres diagnósticos, distribución ecogeográfica y relaciones filogenéticas de Gracilinanus emiliae (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae: Thylamyini). Gracilinanus emiliae es una especie de marsupial conocida a partir de menos de una docena de especímenes. El material examinado presenta rasgos externos y craniodentales distintivos, que difieren de los correspondientes a las restantes especies congenéricas. Revisamos todos los registros publicados de G. emiliae, algunos de los cuales son basados en identificaciones erróneas o material actualmente perdido, y reportamos un nuevo espécimen del noroeste de Perú, el primero registrado para este país, y el primero asociado inequívocamente con bosque húmedo primario de tierra baja. Los datos geográficos disponibles sugieren que G. emiliae (o un complejo de especies crípticas) tiene una distribución muy amplia en Amazonía y quizás también en los bosques húmedos de la costa de Venezuela. Los análisis filogenéticos de caracteres morfológicos y moleculares sugieren que G. emiliae es el grupo hermano de las restantes especies de Gracilinanus. La historia biogeográfica de este género es probablamente compleja

    Abstract In this paper we present a discrete a posteriori error estimate for a thermoelastic model problem approximated using the component mode synthesis (CMS) model reduction method. The problem is one-way coupled in the sense that heat transfer affects the elastic deformation, but not vice versa. The error estimate bounds the difference between the reduced and the standard finite element solution in terms of discrete residuals and corresponding dual weights. A feature of the estimate is that it automatically gives a quantitative measure of the propagation of error between the thermal and elastic solvers with respect to a certain computational goal. We accompany the analytical results by a numerical example

    EVALUATING AVIAN-HABITAT RELATIONSHIPS IN RED FIR FORESTS OF THE SIERRA NEVADA

    Abstract: Using data from the southern and central Sierra Nevada. we evaluated predictions from the California Department of Fish and Game's (CDFG) Wildlife Habitat Relationships (WHR) System for breeding bird species in red fir (Abies magnifica) forests. We counted birds on 34 study sites during the summers of 1983.1984, and 1985 and detected 50 breeding species. Study sites included stands ineach of four structural classes (all four canopy-closure classes within the mediumbarge-tree sizeclass). Only two bird species that were predicted to occur by the WHR System were not recorded in any of the the four sampled structural classes of red fir habitat. However. 26 species were present in at least one class of red fir habitat in which they were not predicted. Based on mean observation frequency and abundance, we subjectively rated the potential ability of each structural class to support low, medium. and high breeding populations of each bird species. Forty-six percent of OUT predictions were for higher habitat suitability ratings than those in the WHR System. We suggest a historic rating for species that formerly occurred in high numbers, are uncommon or absent today, but may use the habitat again in the future
