A path-independent domain integral to characterize fatigue crack propagation by cyclic material forces
A lot of structures undergoing cyclic loading fail at load values smaller than their ultimate design loads. In the framework of fracture mechanics, the crack propagation process can be separated into three different stages. In the first stage, micro-cracks propagate and form together a macro-crack. The macro-crack propagates stably in the second stage, which is also known as the PARIS' regime. In the third stage, the crack propagates unstably leading to the failure of the structure. The pioneering law characterizing the stable crack growth is PARIS' law. The aforementioned law correlates the crack growth rate to the cyclic stress intensity factor. Unfortunately, the cyclic stress intensity factor is limited to cases where the theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics is applicable. To overcome the limitations of the cyclic stress intensity factor, domain-integrals evaluated by configurational forces or material forces are used as a fatigue crack growth criterion. However, the aforementioned domain-integrals are path-dependent. The aim of the study at hand is to derive a path-independent domain integral to characterize fatigue crack propagation in elastic-plastic and linear viscoelastic solids at small strains. First of all, the cyclic material forces are derived using the cyclic free energy. Furthermore, the path-independence of the cyclic material forces approach is illustrated by numerical examples. Finally, the cyclic material force approach is validated by comparing it to experimental results
Electrical-thermal operating behavior of aged compression type power connections
Compression type power connections like tension joints and dead-ends are widely used in transmission lines. However, these fittings may be the weak link during their lifetime in some cases and the respective failure modes are still not fully understood. This paper therefore focusses on the operating behavior of aged compression type tension joints. In general, different types of electrical contacts are realized in connections with stranded conductors, e.g. contacts between sleeve and conductor as well as contacts between and within the conductor layers. Concerning aged connections, having a high resistance at the contacts between the layers, a heating of the connection was observed, which did not correlate with the measured joint resistance. High temperatures occurred at the adjacent conductor simultaneously. An interaction of the connection on the current distribution in the conductor is the supposed cause. In order to describe the observed operating behavior coupled electrical and thermal models were developed. The current distribution in connection and conductor depending on the resistances of the respective contact types were calculated. The resulting distribution of the power losses in the conductor-connection-system was the input variable for the thermal model. Temperature distributions were calculated in parametric studies depending on the contacts conditions
Development of expansive concrete for chemical prestressing applications
Expansive concrete is a specialized type of concrete that expands when mixed with water leading to a larger volume after setting. Such concrete is usually used to compensate for shrinkage. However, although expansive concrete can also be used in self-stressing concrete (chemical prestressing), still such use is very limited. This is because achieving high expansion rates in expansive concrete while upholding desirable mechanical strength and durability characteristics presents a formidable challenge. This study aims to develop expansive concrete capable of achieving substantial expansion rates while maintaining robust mechanical attributes. The research also delves into the material's behaviour over an extended period of time. First, a thorough examination of existing literature was conducted to select the component of the mixture. The mixture was subsequently prepared using various replacement ratios of expansive agent (CSA) in relation to the weight of the cement. These ratios included: 0%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 17.5%, and 20%. To study the influence of curing, the specimens were divided into two groups: one immersed in water, while the other was left in dry conditions. The findings have revealed that high expansion values can be achieved when using moderate replacement rations of CSA in combination with continuous water curing. Conversely, low expansion rates were recorded for specimens cured in dry conditions. Notably, such specimens can expand later when exposed to water, which can adversely influence the strength and durability of the concrete
Immediate and lasting effects of different regulation of craving strategies on cue-induced craving and the late positive potential in smokers
Craving, induced by substance-related cues, contributes to continued substance use and relapse. Therefore, regulation of craving (ROC) is important for treatment success. Distraction involves disengaging from craving-inducing cues; whereas, reappraisal requires engaging with potential risks of substance use. Given this difference in elaboration, we addressed the question whether reappraisal entails lasting advantages over distraction in successful ROC. To elucidate how this is implemented neurally, we examined the late positive potential (LPP) as an electrocortical indicator of motivated attention to cues. N = 62 smokers viewed smoking-related pictures and indicated the degree of craving each picture induced. While viewing the pictures, EEG was recorded, and the participants focused on the long-term negative (LATER) or short-term positive (NOW) consequences of smoking or performed an arithmetic task to distract themselves from processing the pictures (DISTRACT). After a break, all pictures were presented again without regulation instruction (re-exposure). Results revealed that LATER and DISTRACT achieved similar degrees of immediate ROC success, but only LATER had a sustained effect during re-exposure. In contrast, LPP amplitudes were more prominently reduced during DISTRACT than LATER, and there was no difference in LPP amplitudes during re-exposure. These findings imply that it may be beneficial to engage with the risks of drug use (reappraisal) rather than avoiding triggers of craving (distraction). However, these effects do not seem to be mediated by lasting changes in cue-related motivated attention (LPP)
Preferential recruitment and stabilization of Myosin II at compartment boundaries in Drosophila
The regulation of mechanical tension exerted at cell junctions guides cell behavior during tissue formation and homeostasis. Cell junctions along compartment boundaries, which are lineage restrictions separating cells with different fates and functions within tissues, are characterized by increased mechanical tension compared to that of cell junctions in the bulk of the tissue. Mechanical tension depends on the actomyosin cytoskeleton; however, the mechanisms by which mechanical tension is locally increased at cell junctions along compartment boundaries remain elusive. Here, we show that non-muscle Myosin II and F-actin transiently accumulate and mechanical tension is increased at cell junctions along the forming anteroposterior compartment boundary in the Drosophila melanogaster pupal abdominal epidermis. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching experiments showed that Myosin II accumulation correlated with its increased stabilization at these junctions. Moreover, photoconversion experiments indicated that Myosin II is preferentially recruited within cells to junctions along the compartment boundary. Our results indicate that the preferential recruitment and stabilization of Myosin II contribute to the initial build-up of mechanical tension at compartment boundaries
