Semi-direct restorative technique for aesthetic and functional restoration in posterior teeth: case report

    No full text
The semi-direct restorative technique using composite resin has gained increased popularity in clinical practice due to several advantages: reduced cost for patients, the feasibility of composite resin restorations in teeth with significant structural loss, time[1]saving, improved margin adaptation, polishing, polymerization, and aesthetics of the restoration performed outside the mouth. Objective: The aim of this study was to present a clinical case involving the restoration of posterior teeth with substantial coronal destruction using the semi-direct technique. Case report: The tooth was prepared (defective restoration removal) following onlay preparation guidelines. The preparation was then molded using alginate, and the model was obtained in elastomeric material (addition-polymerized silicone). A composite resin restoration was crafted on the model, photoactivated, and polished outside the mouth. Following the resin restoration on the silicone model, it was cemented onto the prepared tooth. Absolute isolation was employed, the temporary restoration was removed, and the preparation was cleaned. For cementation, sandblasting with aluminum oxide in the internal portion, etching with phosphoric acid, and the application of an adhesive system were performed. Subsequently, a dual polymerization resin cement was manipulated, applied to the resin piece, and placed on the prepared tooth. Excess cement was removed, and the piece was photoactivated for 40 seconds on each surface. Finally, the piece’s adaptation was verified, occlusal contacts were checked, and finishing and polishing were carried out. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the semi-direct composite resin restoration enabled achieving improved anatomy, marginal adaptation, polishing, and resistance, consequently enhancing clinical longevity with a better cost-benefit ratio for the patient

The impact of antibiotic use on dental enamel development defects: a systematic review of studies in animal models

    No full text
Dental enamel development defects (DDEs) affect up to 40% of individuals and result from genetic, epigenetic, systemic, or local factors. DDEs are classified as hypomineralizations (qualitative defects) or hypoplasias (quantitative defects). Prolonged antibiotic use, particularly amoxicillin in early childhood, has been suggested as a potential cause. While in vitro studies indicate an effect on amelogenesis, no systematic reviews have analyzed this association in animal models. This study systematically reviews animal studies on amoxicillin’s impact on DDEs. Objective: To systematically review animal studies investigating amoxicillin’s effects on dental enamel defects. Material and methods: This review follows PRISMA guidelines. The PICOS strategy defined eligibility criteria, focusing on animal studies assessing amoxicillin’s effects on enamel. Exclusion criteria included: (1) non-animal models, (2) other drug therapies, (3) antibiotics other than amoxicillin, (4) literature reviews or editorials, and (5) in vitro studies. A comprehensive search in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted without restrictions. Two independent reviewers screened titles/abstracts, resolving conflicts through a third reviewer. Data extraction included study details (author, year, animal model, dose, and enamel evaluation method). Bias risk was assessed using SYRCLE criteria. Results: From 141 articles, 84 duplicates were removed. After screening, 9 studies (2011–2020) remained for full-text analysis, including 8 case-control studies and 1 randomized clinical trial. Animal models included pigs, mice, and rats, with amoxicillin doses ranging from 50 mg/kg to 3.0 g/kg. Enamel defects were assessed via X-ray microtomography, scanning electron microscopy, and histological staining. Some studies reported reduced enamel mineral density and structural changes in ameloblasts, while others found no significant effects. Conclusion: Animal studies suggest a potential link between amoxicillin use and DDEs, particularly enamel hypomineralization. However, inconsistencies in study designs, doses, and evaluation methods highlight the need for further research

Orthodontic treatment with extraction of ectopic canine replaced by premolar

    No full text
Ectopic mandibular canines are a rare condition that has been little documented in the literature, and their treatment can be challenging for clinicians. Case report: The present article reports on the treatment of an ectopic mandibular canine (43) located transversely to the midline in the chin region in an upright patient with Class II malocclusion with biprotrusion and severe crowding. It was decided to extract the ectopic canine in the lower arch, together with the removal of three premolars, to correct the crowding without prejudice to the inclination of the incisors. As well as correcting the negative discrepancy, extraction treatment can also improve facial balance and profile. Results: After two years’ follow-up, the case is stable with satisfactory results. Conclusion: Clinicians must use their judgement to consider if orthodontic traction of a tooth in the lower arch is feasible or outweighs its cons. The replacement of a canine by the premolar in the lower arch can be achieved without aesthetic or functional compromise

A revista Eu Sei Tudo e o pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial: imaginário social e discurso jornalístico

    Get PDF
