Inviting Self-Efficacy in Children: Taking Competition Out of the Game
No full textThe predictive power of self-efficacy beliefs of children aged 4 to 10 was investigated using common schoolyard activities. Participants were 24 elementary school-aged children and 4 pre-kindergarten-aged children. Age-appropriate tasks included the standing broad jump for both groups, a targeted ball kick for the older group and basketball dribbling for the younger group. Results indicated that until around the fifth birthday, the age at which most children begin formal education, the ability to predict performance was not reliable. The school-aged children were more accurate in their predictions and, as a group, illustrated the role of peer support and selfconfidence in developing self-efficacy
Invitational Theory and Practice Applied to Resiliency Development in At-Risk Youth
No full textResilience development is a growing field of study within the scholarly literature regarding social emotional achievement of at- risk students. Developing resiliency is based on the assumption that positive, pro-social, and/or strength-based values inherent in children and youth should be actively and intentionally developed. The core values of Invitational Theory and Practice of trust, optimism, care, intentionality, and respect can be applied to the values in other theories of resilience development. This paper argues that Invitational Theory and Practice also applies to the practices of resiliency development and should be considered a useful theory for culture change in pubic schools, alternative schools, and other educational organizations that serve at-risk children and youth
The Inviting/Disinviting Index: Instrument Validation and Relation to Motivation and Achievement
No full textExploratory factor analysis results revealed that the inviting self and inviting others scales of the Inviting/Disinviting Index possess internal consistency and provide a reliable assessment of invitations. Findings also suggest that the disinviting scales require additional study and possible modification. Inviting self and inviting others were related to motivation constructs, but path analysis results showed that, although invitations did not have a direct effect on academic achievement, inviting self influenced achievement indirectly through academic self-efficacy and self-efficacy for self-regulation. Girls were more inviting of others and less disinviting of others than were boys. Sixth-grade students reported being more inviting of themselves and of others than did eighth-grade students
Les dispositifs scénographiques de la rupture post-exotique dans Écrivains d’Antoine Volodine
No full textÉcrivains d’Antoine Volodine sert ici de corpus paradigmatique pour traquer les dispositifs scénographiques illustrant des changements dans l’approche du roman exotique. Les quatre dispositifs retenus pour justifier l’invention de l’étiquette post-exotique (une réaction contre la littérature dominante, un processus de démarcation des groupes et écoles littéraires, une posture d’écrivain mineur et une impossibilité des personnages à accéder à l’espace extérieur dans la fiction) sont corrélatifs à un ensemble de conditions socio-historiques, littéraires et médiatiques d’une part, et à une démarche de singularisation par laquelle l’auteur recherche la reconnaissance et la visibilité dans l’espace littéraire d’autre part.Nous prenons Écrivains d’Antoine Volodine comme corpus paradigmatique pour traquer les dispositifs scénographiques illustrant des changements dans l’approche du roman exotique. Imagining a Neuroqueer Technoscience
No full textThe rise of mobile communication applications and technologies presents promising therapeutic and accessibility-related interventions for neurodivergent users. However, top-down approaches in human-computer interaction (HCI) research often prioritize the needs and goals of allistic and neurotypical researchers and secondary stakeholders in media creation. Furthermore, media technologies are created with a one-size-fits-all approach, with the intent of rehabilitating or curing neurodivergent ways of being. This article imagines neuroqueer technoscience as an extension of crip technoscience that amplifies new styles of relationality, self-expression, and communication practices within the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Using an interdisciplinary framework informed by crip technoscience and human-computer interaction research, the author presents three tenets for mediating neuroqueer subjectivities

Comparing Penitential Acts: Why the Flagellants of 1349 Were Condemned While Those in 1260 Were Not
No full textThis essay looks at two different groups of Christian flagellants. The first, in 1260 AD, was given Church approval and became widespread. Less than one hundred years later, in 1349 AD and during the Black Death, another movement of Flagellants became widespread but was quickly condemned by the Church. This essay compares these two groups to investigate why they received different Papal responses. By using the available English sources of the time along with secondary source evidence, this essay highlights key differences between the Flagellants of 1260 and those in 1349 particularly drawing on their observed behaviours, public appearances, and their response to larger movements
The Contribution of Expert Coaches’ Experiential Knowledge in Understanding Punching Performance
No full textTraditionally, the field of sports science has been interested in conducting research that is predominately quantitative in nature. Although this approach has provided significant findings, this has led to expert coaches’ experiential knowledge being neglected in favour of empirical knowledge. By investigating punching in boxing, we are interested in developing an understanding of whether elite coaches, through their experiential knowledge, intuitively identify key characteristics of effective punching as identified in controlled experimental research. For this purpose, five interviews were conducted with professional and amateur boxing coaches. From this qualitative approach it was evident that coaches’ knowledge was consistent with that of the empirical research on effective punching performance with four principal components emerging from the interview data. These included: 1) whole body movement, 2) footwork, 3) hip and shoulder rotation, and 4) hand and arm position. The data illuminated how coaches’ knowledge can be used to strengthen empirical findings in sports performance, in this case punching in boxing. Additionally, characteristics of performance that were discussed by coaches that were not identified in the empirical literature highlight directions for further research regarding effective punching technique, an area that requires further investigation before conclusive structures of good practice can be applied
