Love Thyself as Thy Neighbor? Self-Other Orientations of Inviting Behaviors
No full textOne of the key components of the invitational model (Purkey, 1978; Purkey & Novak, 1984; Purkey Schmidt, 1987; Purkey & Stanley, 1991) is that individuals who are intentionally respectful, trusting, and optimistic towards both themselves and others, personally and professionally, are most likely to move towards optimal human growth and wellness. Actions that exhibit these qualities are known as "inviting" behaviors; while actions that devalue, dehumanize, or disrespect the self or others are known as "disinviting" behaviors (Purkey & Schmidt, 1987)

No full textProfessional development (PD) has emerged over that last decade as a recognisedarea of study (Evans 2002). PD of teachers is seen as an essential ingredientfor creating effective schools and raising students’ performance (Rhodes &Houghton-Hill 2000; Wood & Millichamp 2000; Birman, Desimone, Porter &Garet 2000). Since teachers have the most direct contact with students as wellas a considerable control over what is taught and how it is taught, it is reasonablyassumed that enhancing teachers’ knowledge, skills and attitudes is a criticalstep in improving learner performance (King & Newman 2001; Ribisch1999; Anonymous 2001/2002). It is necessary to realise that teachers cannothope to use the most sophisticated approach to student learning unless they haveboth the skills to use it and the desire to implement it (Shaw 2003)
Coloring in the Emotional Language of Place
No full textMaking educational places more inviting to learners is a key aspect of Invitational Theory. Thispaper introduces a simple technique for sensitizing learners and instructors to how their environmentaffects their feelings and ability to learn. It describes a learning exercise that may beused to assess, evaluate and transform places, to promote either calm reflection or creative energyas well as some experience based on three years of application in a college-level Geographycourse. The approach, founded in the S!mkhya–Yoga conception of the three modes of materialnature, asks learners detect the roles of Sattva (peace, harmony, tranquility, awareness), Rajas(energy, action, creativity, destructiveness) and Tamas (inert, veiled, ignorance) workingtogether in their habitat and to think about how this balance may be adjusted to positive effect.Learners found the approach novel but many welcomed this new way of envisioning their world

L\u27 esthétique de l’hétérogénéité dans Dites-moi le songe d’Abdelfattah Kilito
No full textLooking at aesthetics and heterogeneity in Abdelfattah Kilito’s Dites-moi le songe, this article examines how this work challenges the limits of literary genres. Dites-moi le songe includes essayistic digressions, fragmentary writing, oneiric narratives, and elements of the novel. Using literary and extra-literary intertextuality, it rehabilitates Classical Arabic literature.
Cette contribution analyse l’esthétique de l’hétérogénéité dans Dites-moi le songe, essai narrativisé de l’écrivain et universitaire marocain Abdelfattah Kilito. Dans ce texte éclaté, Kilito passe avec souplesse d’un genre à l’autre, favorisant une créativité au-delà des limites génériques. Les digressions essayistiques, l’écriture fragmentaire, le récit onirique et l’intertextualité littéraire et extra-littéraire sont aussi bien les aspects internes qu’externes de cette esthétique de l’hétérogénéité. C’est dans ce sens que l’identité générique du texte se pose avec acuité. Est-ce un roman ? Un essai ? Ou s’agit-il d’un texte qui cherche son identité entre les frontières génériques ? Par ailleurs, Kilito opère, à travers cette écriture transgénérique et réflexive, une relecture critique et une réhabilitation de la mémoire littéraire arabe classique. Il revisite dans cette perspective les classiques de cette mémoire afin d’interroger les systèmes axiologiques d’Orient et d’Occident. En d’autres termes, il réhabilite la littérature en tant que méditation littéraire, dont l’identité est mouvante. S’il en est ainsi, Dites-moi le songe est le lieu d’une sensibilité pensante

Pour se démarquer de cette représentation, l’auteur Nassur Attoumani propose une nouvelle approche en dépeignant la femme insulaire contemporaine sous de nouveaux jours dans le roman Mon mari est plus qu’un fou : c’est un homme. Q: What Happened Then? The Verbal Workshop
No full textThe objective of the Verbal Workshop led by artist Landon Mackenzie at Brock University was to discuss the participants’ experience of wearing a mask during the pandemic. The mask will be the most remembered object from this pandemic. It is part of how we present ourselves, and our wardrobe, but also our disguise. To prepare for the workshop, participants made masks and revisited the strange comfort of these disguises that became so comforting yet alienating in the time of Covid-19. They also made small stands out of cardboard, plastic or wire that allowed them to properly display their masks as objects of value. In addition, they prepared a 3–5-minute story about something that occurred to them in pandemic times. Reports on how they made their masks were also accepted
