American Football and Facilities at the University of Colorado: Contributions Toward Building the Institution Before Folsom Field
No full textThe present study sought to understand more about which individuals or groups influenced the development of the University of Colorado’s (CU) football grounds (i.e., American football) and to determine how their evolving complexity (e.g., increasing size, services, technology, and capacities) shaped the image of an elite institution and the cultural ascension of the Rocky Mountain region in the Western United States. More specifically, the current research showcases how football and early playing grounds served as institutional social anchors and influenced or addressed enrollment growth, cultivated alumni relationships, produced or rallied financial support, and promoted the school. Next, the present study determines whether the various construction projects and renovations of CU football athletic grounds match the larger pattern practiced by other institutions of higher education, both regionally and nationally. Finally, the current research demonstrated that CU used football and its stadia, like other institutions of higher education, as a strategic social anchor for students, alumni, local (i.e., Boulder) community members, and businesses to interact or engage one another. As a social anchor, CU football, and its related facilities, helped the institution create and maintain a unique institutional identity among its competitors

No full textAcculés à vivre dans les banlieues, les immigrés maghrébins en France, à partir des années cinquante, ont subi l’ostracisme infligé par leurs hôtes sur la terre d’accueil. Relégués aux bancs de la société, certains de leurs enfants, traumatisés, ont choisi la voie de l’écriture pour ébruiter leur détresse et réclamer une certaine visibilité. Aux prises avec l’aliénation et la stigmatisation, ces écrivains natifs ou immigrés ont mis leur plume au service de leurs doléances. Mehdi Charef fait partie de ceux qui ont été contraints de s’exiler pour rejoindre leurs parents, partis travailler dans l’hexagone. No full textOn 10 November 2021, Indigenous and settler architects, urbanists, and artists Adrian Blackwell, David Fortin, Bonnie Devine, luugigyoo patrick reid stewart, and Tiffany Kaewen Dang reimagined Canadian cities during a virtual round table organized by the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture (STAC) at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Brock University. The topic was “Rethinking property in c\a\n\a\d\a.” The present text is a creative appreciation resulting from the collage of textual fragments excerpted from the feedback provided by a few viewers.

No full textCet article se penche sur Marie d’Arbaud, connue pour être la fille du félibre Valère-Martin et mère de Joseph d’Arbaud. Au-delà de cette double filiation, Marie d’Arbaud est l’auteure d’un recueil de poésies intitulé Lis Amouro de ribas (Les mûres des rives), publié en 1863. Marie d’Arbaud n’en écrira pas d’autre et arrêtera sa production littéraire à 29 ans. Cette étude analyse l’ouvrage lui-même, mais tente aussi de montrer comment déterminisme social et dispositions psychologiques ont leur part de responsabilité dans cette fin de créativité poétique
Setbacks and Partial Victories: Social Justice Struggles After 28 Years of Democracy in South Africa
No full textPost-apartheid South Africa is ravaged by crises of extreme unemployment, poverty, and inequality. While the majority who were politically excluded by apartheid can now choose their government through democratic elections, social and economic justice continues to elude them. Neoliberal policies which seek to reduce state expenditure on social services and promote state policies that protect the interests of big businesses at the expense of working-class and poor communities, along with corruption and abuse of power, are the primary causes of poverty and unemployment. However, what is missing in the assessments of social justice since the pre-1994 democratic era is the recognition that social justice organisations have not simply disappeared, but have actually remained involved in social justice struggles. Based on information from in-depth interviews and internet sources, this article records some of the partial victories scored through these struggles, albeit in the context of generalised pauperisation of working-class and poor communities. These partial victories in the era of defeats show that these organisations, although weakened, have not given up the struggle for social justice
