Silver Smelter, Bunker Hill Mine
Standing behind two 16-bar pallets of silver bars especially cast for the Idaho Historical Society are (l to r) Chas. E. Schwab, president; A.Y. Bethune, manager of metallurgy; and J.M. Haivala, general manager, all of the Bunker Hill Company, Kellogg, Idaho. The picture is taken in the silver refinery of the Bunker Hill Smelter at Kellogg. The furnace on the left is in operation, and molten silver is pouring into a small kettle. The silver cast for the Idaho Historical Society was mined at the Bunker Hill Mine at Kellogg, and refined to 999 plus fineness.
In 1961 for the Centennial Program, which celebrated the centennial of the Idaho Territory, Governor Smylie assigned the Idaho State Historical Society to issue a Centennial Medal. The Medallic Art Company of New York City produced the metal and used the 1863 Seal of the Territory for the reverse of the medalliion
