We Still Have A Lot To Learn: Learning Experiences Of Individuals Age 80 And Older In Care Facilities In A Midwestern State

    Get PDF
104 p.This qualitative study focused on the learning experiences of individuals, age 80 and older, in care facilities in a Midwestern state. Even with the well documented growth of the over age 85 demographic, there are few studies about learning that included this demographic or considered the wants and needs of this group. Using a phenomenological research approach, participants for this study were purposefully selected from two rural and two urban care facilities. These participants took part in three semi-structured interviews. The first included questions about their life history, the second focused on their current learning activities, while the final interview provided time for the participants to reflect on the meaning of learning within their lives. Additional data was collected through observing learning activities at each of the participating facilities. By using the constant comparative data analysis method along with open and focused coding, four themes emerged from the data collected: overwhelming participation in both non-formal and informal learning, learning through travel and exercise, motivation for learning: cognitive interests and social aspect, and positive impacts of learning in later life. The importance of continuing learning activities in later life was overwhelmingly supported by the findings of this study. The participants in this study were active, able, and learning daily. They all provided images of individuals over 80 who are successfully aging and living. With a lack of research that includes the over age 85 demographic, the findings of this study call for a start to building a better understanding of the impacts of continued learning with the oldest of the old

An Exploratory Study On The Assessment Of Pre-Service Teacher Dispositions By Teacher Education Programs In Iowa

    Get PDF
147 leavesProblem: Within the higher education community there is discourse regarding teacher dispositions and the assessment of dispositions. Murray (2007) and Damon (2007) posited that additional scholarship and research were needed to provide a meaningful construct of dispositions. With this lack of consensus, teacher education programs need to explore dispositions and how best to assess them. Procedures: This quantitative (Creswell, 2012) study explored the background characteristics of teacher education programs in Iowa to determine if there were differences in the assessment of pre-service teacher dispositions. Data were gathered through a survey (Fink, 2009). Methods: A postpositivist worldview (Crotty, 1998) was used to explore the background characteristics of teacher education programs to determine if there were differences (Green & Salkind, 2011) in how teacher dispositions were assessed. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Johnson and Christensen, 2008; Tabachnick & Fidell, 2007). Results: Analyses of the data revealed there were differences in the assessment of dispositions based on geographic location, Carnegie classification, teacher education enrollment, and the type of institution. Conclusions: The study hypothesized there would be differences in how programs assessed dispositions. Data indicated there were differences in when, who, how, and what dispositions were assessed. Recommendation: Recommendation include using varied methods to assess dispositions, providing students with ongoing feedback regarding dispositions, employing multiple assessors including student self-assessment, creating remediation plans when needed, and stressing the value and role of dispositions in effective teaching

Development of iPad Application "Sound Reading"

    No full text
Mentor: Timothy UrnessMobile computing is a high interest topic in computer science today. The Drake University Virtual Language Studies is taking advantage of this trend by developing an iPad application. The application, “Sound Reading,” is designed to assist with foreign language listening and speaking comprehension. To accomplish this, it allows a fluent speaker or instructor to create an audio recording and share it with other language learners. Many features are implemented, including audio recording and playback, dynamic text manipulation, Bluetooth data transfer, and server connectivity. Sound Reading was developed using Apple’s integrated development environment, Xcode, and the code was written in the Objective-C language. The app is currently being finalized and will be submitted to the iOS App Store upon completion.Drake University, College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Mathematics & Computer Scienc

Implicit Relational Learning in a Multiple-Object Tracking Task

    Get PDF
Mentor: Olga LazarevaWe used multiple-object tracking task to examine whether contextual information presented in a background can facilitate tracking accuracy. College students were instructed to track either two or four out of eight objects and report at the end of the trial whether a single cued object was among those they tracked (yes/no task). The display also contained two strips of different width. In Informative condition, the location of the cued object after the tracking predicted the correct choice. If the answer was "yes,” then the object was located next to the narrower of the two strips (or, it was located next to the wider strip depending on the counterbalancing). In Random condition, the location of the cued object did not predict the correct choice. We expected participants in Random condition to be more accurate when tracking two objects than when tracking four objects, a common result in multiple- object tracking research. If the participants in Informative condition also tracked the objects, then we should see a similar pattern of results. Additionally, if the participants utilize the information about object location, then they should be more accurate in Informative condition than in Random condition. Preliminary results will be presented.Drake University, College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Psycholog

Individual, Family, School, And Community Predictors Of High School Male Suicidal Behaviors: An Analysis Of 2010 Iowa Youth Survey Data

    Get PDF
122 leavesYouth suicide is a public health issue and the second leading cause of death for young Iowans ages 15 to 24 years, with young males six times more likely to die than their female peers (Iowa Department of Public Health, 2009). Suicide among adolescents is a complex issue, but there are patterns of individual, family, school, and community influences that contribute to the likelihood a young person will think about, plan, or attempt suicide. Examination of those patterns reveals that adolescent males have a different constellation of risk and protective factors impacting their likelihood of suicide (Kelly, Lynch, Donovan, & Clark, 2001) than adolescent females. Using Bronfenbrenner’s (2005) bioecological model of human development, the purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the macrosystem of race/ethnicity, and the microsystems of individual (risk behaviors of substance use and anti-social choices, and resilient behavior of self-determination), family (family engagement), school (school connectedness), and community (community support) predicted the suicide behaviors of intent or attempt in 11th grade males in the state of Iowa. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated each of the variables was predictive of either suicide intent or attempt, with substance use, anti-social choices, self-determination, family engagement, and school connectedness predictive of both of the suicidal behaviors. This study provides information about predictors of suicidal behaviors among young males, which can lead to the development of targeted strategies for prevention. Recommendations for policy and practice are provided for individual, family, school, and community interventions

    Metallorganic Synthesis of A-Amino Acids

    No full text
Mentor: Dr. John GituaAmino acids are important biological compounds and useful chemical reagents in many chemistry applications. The ongoing investigation of the synthesis of α-amino acids was done via a metallorganic reaction of imines using a titanium complex. Such reaction procedures required low temperature and a controlled anhydrous environment. The products were analyzed and characterized using 34 infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatographic techniques. Infrared spectra peaks confirm the presence of a carboxylic acid functional group. Further experiments are being conducted to further study α-amino acid synthesis.Drake University, College of Arts & Science

    Analysis of Anti-Malarial Drug: Metakelfin

    No full text
Mentor: Dr. John GituaMalaria is a mosquito –borne infectious disease of humans caused by the bite of a female anopheles mosquito. The disease is prevalent in tropical regions of the world mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America. Anti-malarial medications such as chloroquine, artemisinin, doxycycline, Metakelfin and other drugs are used to treat malarial infections. In this experiment the antimalarial drug, Metakelfin was analyzed to identify the presence of the main active ingredients. The extraction of such ingredients was using the appropriate solvents and gave a mixture of two components: Pyrimethamine and sulfamethoxyprazine which were further separated using the column chromatography. Characterization of such compounds involved the use of melting point determinations as well as infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatographic techniques.Drake University, College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Chemistr

    Re-imagining Shakespeare - Twelfth Night (program 1)

    No full text
This exhibition represents the cross-discipline collaboration of more than sixty of Drake's students. After studying several of the Bard's plays, students in Sarah Hogan's Reading Shakespeare courses (ENG 058) worked in small groups to direct and perform scenes from "The Merchant of Venice", "Hamlet", and "Twelfth Night". They then collectively drafted a series of short essays on their imagined full-length productions. These modern adaptations, explained in the collaboratively-authored programs, ranged from a "Hamlet" set in the impoverished town of Denmark, South Carolina, to a "Twelfth Night" that explores the gender politics of corporate America. Students in the Graphic Design Two courses (ART 116) taught by Hilary Williams then worked in pairs to create theater posters and program covers that drew on these materials for inspiration and interpretation. All along the way, students have shared ideas, debated visions, and re-imagined Shakespeare.William Shakespeare was no stranger to collaboration. More than a few of his plays were co-authored with fellow dramatists or adapted by others in the process of publication, while performances of his works have always depended on the efforts of actors, investors, and even audiences. Indeed, in his time, Shakespeare was part of a commercial company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, and later, the King's Men. Bringing his works to both light and life has therefore always required the imaginative labor of many.Drake University English Department, Professor Sarah Hogan, and Drake University Graphic Design Department, Professor Hilary Williams.
