The Dilemma of Existence in the Nuclear Age: Four Views
99 leaves.The problem. The United States' use of the atom bomb in 1945 marks the beginning of a definite trend in American literature. Since that time, many writers have dealt with the questions of man's purpose and position in the universe and the existence and nature of God.
Procedure. The introduction of the thesis traces earlier dealings with the basic issue while the body includes analyses of four post-World War II American novels. Wise Blood, by Flannery O·Connor; Lie Down in Darkness, by William Styron; The Sirens of Titan, by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; and The Martyred, by Richard Kim.
Findings. The novels approach the problem from various positions: theism, existentialism, black humor, and humanism. They deal with six common themes: war, God, human relationships, love, truth, and personal sacrifice.
Conclusions. The central message of each of the four novels is optimistic. Although circumstances lead man near despair, he can find meaning in life
Changes in Water Quality as Related to Retention Time Within Red Rock Reservoir, Iowa, Summer 1972
49 leaves.The problem. To determine what changes in water quality occur as water enters and moves through Red Rock Reservoir during the summer of 1972.
Procedure. Three stations representing different areas of the lake were sampled twice weekly from June 9 to August 1, 1972. Water samples were collected at 0.5, 1.5, 3.5 and 7.0 meters with temperature data recorded. Specific conductance, pH, dissolved carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity were determined in the field. Samples were refrigerated and returned to the laboratory for the determination of nitrates, phosphates and sulfates.
Findings. Weak thermal stratification occurred in late June and early July but was prevented from becoming stable by high inflow. The average retention time was 11.7 days. The reservoir water was completely replenished five times during the study. No correlation was found between retention time and pH, specific conductance, dissolved carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity. Increased inflow produced high nitrate, phosphate and sulfate values.
Conclusions. The existing high nutrient levels indicate that Red Rock is a productive lake during the summer, however the high flushing rate could prevent the development of plankton populations and retard further eutrophication.
Recommendations. Further work involving nutrient cycles, regeneration and supply in reservoirs is needed. Red Rock Reservoir should be studied during periods in which strong thermal stratification occurs which might distinguish upper and lower basins as well as vertical chemical differences. The effect of the stream regulation, brought about by the completion of Saylorville Reservoir, on Red Rock Reservoir should be investigated

Self-control as Response Produced Time-out from a Stimulus Associated with Reinforcement and Response Independent Shock
29 leaves.The problem: To control escape behavior (self-control) from a stimulus associated with response dependent food and response independent shock.
Procedure: Five rats were trained in operant chambers to press a lever (lever A) for VI 30" food during one stimulus (S1) and never reinforced during another stimulus (S2). When responding stabilized a second lever (lever B) was introduced. The function of a response on lever B was to terminate S1 and produce S2 for three minutes. All subjects exhibited some S1 escape behavior. Following stabilization of S1 escape responses one of four frequencies of response independent shock (VI 15", VI 30", VI 60" or VI 3') was presented during S1. The number of time-out responses (S1 escape responses) was recorded for the different shock frequencies.
Findings: All subjects responded to escape from a stimulus associated with response dependent food and response independent shock. In general the number of time-out responses increased as shock frequency increased and with increasing exposure to shock.
Conclusions: Rats will exhibit a response defined as self-control.
Recommendations: It would be recommended that further research: (1) determine the effects of different shock intensities; (2) attempt to assess the aversiveness of VI schedules
