Changes in Environmental Amenity Values during and after COVID-19 Lockdowns in Ramsey County, Minnesota

    No full text
The outbreak of Covid-19 led to shelter-at-home orders to mitigate its spread, restricting household mobility. In this paper, I explore the impact of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns on price capitalization of two environmental amenities - open space and bodies of water - on home prices in Ramsey County, MN. My results may show a preference for homes located farther from bodies of water during Covid. I find evidence that increased proximity to bodies of water changes from a 0.19% positive capitalization on sale prices to a 1.10% and 0.63% negative capitalization on sale prices during the first lockdown and between lockdowns. However, there is little evidence of open space valuation changes during different phases of the pandemic. This paper broadens the literature on environmental valuation and on the impact of Covid-19 on household behavior

We\u27ll Hear That Song Again : (Re)interpreting Shakespeare\u27s Music for the Contemporary Stage

    No full text
This English project comps examines the relationship between text and music in four of Shakespeare\u27s comedies: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and The Tempest. The project consists of an essay that examines what role songs play in engaging both characters and audience emotionally in a Shakespeare play, as well as new sheet music for all of the vocal songs in the four plays. This new music serves as both a textual interpretation of the plays by the composer and a potential resource for directors who hope to put on one of the four plays in question and would like contemporary music for their productions

Art contre action: Agentivité et activisme dans Le consentement de Vanessa Springora

    No full text

Exploring the Images of the James Webb Space Telescope, a $10 Billion Time Machine

    No full text
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has already revolutionized our understanding of the universe, from observing the most distant galaxies to magnificent nebulae to planets in our own neighborhood. In this work, we will summarize the differences between the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and JWST by comparing their wavelength range, angular resolution, and location. We will then explore new science results from each of JWST’s four main themes, which are roughly categorized as the Early Universe, Galaxy Assembly, Star Formation, and Exoplanets. First, we will understand the concept of redshift and analyze JWST data from the most distant galaxy known to date. Next, we will discuss gravitational lensing and its role in constraining dark matter distributions using JWST’s image of the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster. We will then explore the conservation laws of magneto-hydrodynamics and their role in star forming regions of several JWST images like the Carina Nebula. Finally, we will examine JWST’s role in detecting biosignatures from exoplanets via transmission spectroscopy

Targeted Protein Degradation and Genome Editing as Novel Applications of Chemical Inducers of Proximity

    No full text
The regulation of physical distance between biomolecules inside a cell can serve a wide variety of purposes for its survival through providing specific and discrete cellular responses. A group of small molecules, known as chemical inducers of proximity, are equipped with the ability to modulate biological processes such as cell signaling and microtubule stabilization through its interactions with multiple targets. More recently, this notion of inducing proximity between molecules has inspired new ways to approach therapeutic development. My comps will focus on Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTAC) and base/prime editing, two modalities that focus on achieving therapeutic outcomes through inducing proximity on the protein-protein level and protein-DNA level, respectively. By bringing a disease-causing protein close to an E3 ligase, PROTACs can remove that protein through inducing the cell’s internal protein degradation network. Alternatively, base and prime editing uses an engineered Cas9 fusion protein to facilitate interactions between nucleotides and the enzyme attached to the Cas9 protein to directly edit DNA. Through their unique mechanisms of action, we have expanded our capabilities in treating diseases such as cancer and sickle cell anemia

Place-Based Identities and Political Party Preferences: Urban and Rural Place Identities in Electorate Party Preferences & Federal Welfare Spending Attitudes

    No full text
The United States has been experiencing a political divide across urban and rural communities, with rural areas being more aligned with the Republican Party and urban areas being more closely tied to the Democratic Party. This rural-urban divide erodes the American democratic principle that the majority shall prevail as it rewards the Republican Party with outsized political power as the American electoral system tends to reward political dominance in sparsely populated regions. Ruralites demonstrate larger affects towards the Republican Party as they are more likely than the Democratic Party to key into rural resentments and rural consciousness, ultimately affirming rural self-perceptions. This study suggests that the salience of urban-rural identities depends on the specifics of particular election cycles, rather than following a progressive pattern. Past work has shown that the appearance of same place-identification can increase Respondent affects towards political candidates, particularly amongst Ruralites. This suggests that a solution to the rural-urban political divide could be for the Democratic Party to run more visibly Rural candidates and to utilize the political strategies of the Republican Party that affirm rural self-perceptions. However, growing disaffections towards both parties among the electorate, as this study also notes, may pose a greater challenge for the future of both parties as well as the current status quo of the American political party landscape
