    Does the Federal Reserve Have an Advantage When Forecasting Housing Data?

    Previous studies have shown that the Federal Reserve has a forecasting advantage over the private sector, particularly for forecasts of inflation. A leading theory proposes the Federal Reserve’s advantage comes from internal knowledge of the future path of monetary policy. In this paper, I extend the existing encompassing framework to forecasts of housing starts from 1968 to 2016. I find that the Federal Reserve does have a forecasting advantage for housing starts, particularly at longer forecast horizons, and that Federal Reserve forecasts improved relative to the private sector in the wake of the 2008 housing crash. I also perform a conditional encompassing test to evaluate whether knowledge of monetary policy drives the Federal Reserve’s advantage. I find that it is unlikely that knowledge of monetary policy is the primary source of the advantage

    Impact of Climate Change on Juvenile Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) Freshwater and Marine Juvenile Development

    The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is an anadromous fish species where juveniles develop in both freshwater and marine environments during growth and maturation. The reproductive success and survivorship of Atlantic salmon populations are closely linked to juvenile development. Reproductive success is correlated with juvenile growth whereas survivorship is impacted by predation. Unfortunately, Atlantic salmon populations have been declining due to the impact of climate change which is altering many environmental factors, including temperature. Rising freshwater and marine temperatures are impacting juvenile metabolism, growth physiology, food and foraging behaviors, and vulnerability to predation. Thus, climate change threatens growth and survival of Atlantic salmon in both freshwater and marine environments. In this paper, I argue that the marine stage of Atlantic salmon juvenile development drives the overall impact that climate change has on reproductive fitness and survivorship of the Atlantic salmon due to the importance of marine juvenile growth for fecundity and the high risk of predation during marine juvenile salmon development

    Politics and eminent domain: Evidence from the 1879 California Constitution

    This paper explores the politics of eminent domain, using a specific historical episode: the enactment of the new California constitution in 1879. It presents evidence that the failure of a constitutional provision that would have codified eminent domain powers for water development resulted from a complex interchange of economic interests among farmers, miners, and urban residents. This evidence was manifested in delegate behavior on the floor of the constitutional convention in 1878, including various roll-call votes, which are subjected to an econometric analysis. The results have implications for the interpretation of legislative eminent domain decisions, and the degree to which economic development processes are shaped by the institutional environment in which they occur

    This piece is an exploration of function, shadow, organic/geometric forms, and wood to represent the way I perceive memory. I have created objects, such as vases, bowls, and overhead lights to explore the idea of functionality and its connection to memory. I used the function of the object to represent reality itself - the thing memory mimics. The varying shapes of the objects represents how the memory is represented, and the shadows cast by the objects represents how we remember them
