A Greener Oxidation: Aminoxyl Mediated Electrocatalysis

    No full text
Selective oxidation is a critical process for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and the utilization of biomass. However, traditional large-scale oxidation methods face challenges due to the generation of toxic by-products. Electrochemistry offers a promising green pathway for promoting organic redox reactions without waste, but high energy demand and competitive degradation of electrochemically active functional groups remain obstacles. To address these issues, Dr. Shannon Shahl\u27s research focuses on the use of electrochemical mediators as catalysts to lower energy demands and facilitate selectivity. Join us to learn more about how their innovative approach broadens the toolbox for selective oxidation while addressing environmental concerns

The Higgs Boson, a Portal to the Dark Sector?

    No full text
The newfound ability to produce and detect the Higgs Boson in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has provided an incredible opportunity in the search for dark matter. Throughout this pa- per I will show what we expect from Higgs boson decays in the LHC, and how these decays could detect dark matter once and for all. In this process I will also briefly delve into the schematics of the ATLAS detector at the LHC and the astrophysical impossibilities that imply that the standard model only accounts for 17% of the mass of the universe

The Market Needs the Meat: The effects of the 2017 Brazilian Meat Scandal

    No full text
The Brazilian meat market scandal involves major meat companies engaging in corrupt practices regarding meat processing to sell to consumers. This study investigates the effects of the meat scandal in Brazil on March 17, 2017. To determine the effects of the scandal, food safety concerns, reputation effect, and change in preferences for a good are examined. An event study analysis determines how the scandal and ban affect company returns. A separate analysis is conducted on companies directly involved in the scandal: José Batissta Sobrinho (JBS) and Brazil Foods (BRF), the competitors of these companies: Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) and Tyson Foods (TSN), the Brazilian stock market as a whole: large cap (EWZ) and small cap stocks (EWZS), Brazilian Agriculture: BrasilAgro - Companhia Brasileira de Propriedades Agrícolas (LND) and SLC Agrícola (SLCJY), and Exporters of Brazil: Nippon Express (NPNYY) and Costamare Inc. (CMRE). There are statistically significant results found with JBS, BRF, and Brazilian small cap stocks and varied results among the other analyses

An Introduction to Markov and Hidden Markov Models with Applications

    No full text
Markov and Hidden Markov models are simple probabilistic models for sequences and have been widely used in genetics, language modeling, speech modeling, etc. This paper provides a succinct introduction to these two models and is divided into three sections. The first section describes frequentist and Bayesian inference for Markov models with an application to language modeling. The second section thoroughly discusses the relationship among the limiting, stationary, and visitation distributions of Markov models and how this theory inspired Google\u27s PageRank algorithm for ranking web pages. The third and last section is dedicated to Hidden Markov models; it explains the forwards-backwards algorithm for latent variable inference, the expectation-maximization algorithm for frequentist parameter inference, and the variational inference procedure for approximate Bayesian parameter inference
