Producing Semiconductors Suitable for Water Splitting with Metal Nitrates
This was a project report for Professor Steven Drew\u27s currently on-going project that aims to produce and test mixed metal oxide semiconductors. The production of the mixed metal oxide semiconductors is done with either metal nitrate or metal chloride salts through electrodeposition method. This part of the project was done using nitrate salts. To find the ideal ratio between FeCrAl in the mixed metal oxide complex, the analysis was done with SEM/EDS and its functionality was tested with PEC scan. This experiment aimed to produce p-type semiconductors but instead produced n-type, and will be discussing what may have been the cause of the discrepancy between the SEM/EDS data and the PEC scan result

How Does Zoning Impact Affordable Housing? What Can Be Done To Better Achieve Affordable Housing Goals?
Cities across the country are experiencing rapid increases in housing prices, especially harming low income households with prices increasing nearly 5 times as much as wages in the last year (FRED 2022). In an effort to provide affordable housing for these families, many cities have adopted inclusionary zoning, a form of zoning intended to encourage the development of affordable housing. In practice, inclusionary zoning takes many different forms and leads to a wide range of outcomes. However, even in the areas where inclusionary zoning is most successful in providing affordable housing, it fails to provide sufficient housing to resolve the shortage of affordable units with over 500,000 people (30% of all renters) in New York City facing severe rent prices of over 50% of their income (Schwartz 2019).
Despite the absence of proven methods to resolve the affordable housing crisis in cities, this whitepaper will explore potential solutions for cities to implement and offer some guidance for policymakers to determine what may be the best solution for their city. Further research will certainly be required to validate the success of the proposed solutions; however, the need for additional research does not dampen the importance of trying to implement the solutions.
This whitepaper will first provide some background information on zoning, then examine various theories and the evidence supporting them, next explore policy alternatives such as federal zoning, local zoning, covenants, and nuisance law, that have not been tried yet but theory might support, and finally argue for nuisance law as the best policy to combat the shortage of affordable housing
Getting Off: Uses and Expectations of Pornography Among LGBTQ+ College Students
Pornography is a divisive and stigmatized topic. Past scholarship on porn has been critiqued for oversimplifying the effects of pornography while excluding consumers from discourse. A recent “paradigm shift” in porn studies has called for more qualitative methods which highlight consumers’ ambivalence towards porn. This exploratory study employs semi-structured interviews to examine 11 LGBTQ+ college students’ uses and expectations of porn to synthesize central themes in the literature and highlight the roles of queerness and porn in their sexual lives. For these students, porn is not only a tool for sexual gratification, but also leisure, education, and identity formation. Students construct ethical approaches to consuming porn based on queerness, race, and gender, as well as differences between mainstream and amateur genres. This study affirms the contradictory attitudes consumers hold towards porn while illuminating how students negotiate porn and their sexual lives amidst other sexual discourses. Future research should expand on this dialectical process between sex, queerness, and negotiation while investigating trans consumers’ relationships with porn as well as the economic and social implications of “pro- amateur” porn

Spring Creek Springs: Locating Prairie du Chien Springs in Cowling Arboretum, Northfield, Minnesota
Spring Creek is a tributary of the Cannon River that flows through the Cowling Arboretum (The Arb) on Carleton College campus in the northeastern corner of Rice County, Minnesota. Through discharge and temperature measurements I found evidence that a significant portion of Spring Creek’s total baseflow along this reach is contributed to by groundwater inflow coming from springs and seeps. The surface bedrock is the Shakopee formation of Ordovician age with St. Peter formation hills overlying nearby. Underlying stratigraphy includes 250 ft of the Prairie du Chien aquifer made of the Shakopee and Oneota Formations, and 110 ft of underlying Jordan aquifer. I measured temperature, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity to the discern location and possible source of groundwater discharge into Spring Creek. I measured in February-March and September-October to determine whether the measured properties are seasonally dependent. Measurements in September and October were taken after several days of no precipitation. I found temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements indicative of groundwater discharging within the study area. A Gold Star Approach: Using Gold Nanostars as a Drug Delivery Vehicle for Cancer Treatment
How can gold nanostars serve as effective delivery vehicles for targeted cancer therapies? Dr. Teri Odom and her research group at Northwestern University are developing biocompatible gold nanoconstructs consisting of gold nanostars (AuNS) loaded with an anticancer drug (DNA aptamer AS1411) to selectively target cancer cells. AuNS can be synthesized using a seedless, scalable method that allows for controlled tunability of nanostar size, shape, and optical properties. AS1411 binds specifically and with high affinity to nucleolin (NCL), a receptor that is highly expressed in cancer cells. The Odom group has improved the stability of AS1411 in physiological conditions by grafting the aptamer onto the surface of AuNS by taking advantage of the easy functionalization of the gold surface. The gold nanoconstructs deliver a high, local concentration of AS1411 to cancer cells, resulting in cell death
The Effect of Parental Leave Policy on Children\u27s Outcomes and Reommendations for Optimization with respect to Childhood Development
In this paper, I discuss the upsides and downsides of different parental leave policies focusing mainly on maternity leave. I first examine the status quo in the United States policy wise and discuss the importance of paid leave in child development — showing that the best way to maximize childhood outcomes of paid leave are policies that maximize time off taken while minimizing forgone wages from taking time off
