How do Household characteristics Impact Children’s Enrollment in Bangladesh?
No full textSince there is weak schooling enforcement in developing countries, schooling choices are the private decisions of the parents; therefore, parents are solely responsible for their children\u27s academic welfare. This fact has inspired economists to investigate what household characteristics positively impact children\u27s enrollment in such countries. Past studies have found that parents\u27 decision to enroll their children in school is influenced by parents\u27s education level, household income, and size. However, unlike past studies, to investigate such a relationship between parental education and children\u27s enrollment, I will use more recent data, Household Level Census of Subjective Well-Being, Perceptions of Relative Economic Position, and International Migration, (2013) and principal component analysis to measure income. My results show parental education is insignificant, making income and sibling size the critical catalysts for explaining children\u27s enrolment rate. Theoretically, this finding can be explained by the dominating power or direction of the income and substitution effects

Anyons, a type of particle that can only exist in two dimensional systems, allow us to store quantum information globally, in the topology of a system, making it immune from decoherence. No full textThis paper looks to examine the gender pay gap and its relation to a recent piece of legislation passed in congress titled the Paycheck Fairness Act. In this paper, I will also propose my own policy alternatives based on economic theory and conclude by stating my recommendations for the best ways to enact these policies. The Paycheck Fairness Act aims to decrease discrimination by making it easier for employees to sue their employers if they believe discrimination is at play in the workplace. In order to conduct a full examination of the wage gap, it is necessary to understand what this law looks to influence. The wage gap itself is the disparity in earnings between men and women performing similar work or holding similar positions in the workforce. There are a few different factors which contribute to this gap which I will discuss in further detail in my paper. The first is discrimination which can present itself in a few different forms; taste based or statistical. Discrimination is what the Paycheck fairness act looks to combat. There are also human capital factors which contribute towards a few important theories which heavily influence the wage gap. Occupational segregation and the ‘motherhood penalty’ are essential to explaining the earnings differential between genders and are what I aim to combat in my own policy recommendations. The final theory behind the wage gap is cognitive differences which are simply the innate differences between men and women such as goals, aspirations, and personality which all affect job choices and education. Based on the evidence from these economic theories I propose two additional pieces of legislation. The first is to invest in teaching and promoting occupations where women are underrepresented. This will help attack the root cause of occupational segregation which occurs in the premarket sorting process. The other policy I suggest is for the United States to adopt the Swedish child care system and parental benefits from employers. This will attempt to eliminate the ‘motherhood penalty’ by giving parents options which may increase their potential to keep working even while raising a child. My ultimate recommendation is to enact all three proposed policies and because they attack different determinants of the wage gap, if each piece of legislation can have some influence, then together they will be able to at least shrink the earnings differential between men and women
The Economy of Elegy: Abjection and the Fiction of the Mutuus Amor in Propertius\u27 Elegy 4.5
No full textThis paper argues that Propertius’ Elegy 4.5 exposes the precarity of the prostitute-client relationship through demonstrating the economic rationale that motivates the sex worker, which contrasts with the relational rationale that motivates the poet. As the amator exclusus, the poet eavesdrops on a conversation between a prospective sex worker and a lena, the woman who owned and operated a brothel or otherwise managed prostitutes. While eavesdropping, Propertius hears the lena instruct the woman she is with to “adapt yourself to the ways of a man” (in mores te verte viri), followed by several recommendations specifically geared towards monetizing the desire men of all classes feel for the sex worker (Prop. Elegy 4.5.45ff). Propertius’ reaction to this knowledge appears to be to curse the lena, as the two couplets of invectives that begin the poem (Prop. Elegy 4.5.1-4) and the sacrifice to Venus that concludes the lena’s extended monologue (Prop. Elegy 4.5.65-66) would suggest. The abjection that the poet feels is caused by his own aestheticization of the sexual labor of prostitutes, which had previously obscured the economic rationale behind the actions of the poet’s object of desire.
The revelation of the economic rationale of the sex worker reaffirms the class boundary between the wage-earning woman (the etymological meaning of meretrix, “prostitute”) and the leisured, ‘penniless’ poet. Further, this disturbs the servitium amoris trope that is common in Latin love elegy. The poet is willing to be the slave of the object of his desire but not to the lena, who has the power to expel him from the brothel and bar him from seeing the object of his desire. This faculty puts Propertius under the power of the lena, and under her power, the poet is forced to consider that he is not completely free, deteriorating the boundary between the free and unfree

Astronomical Imaging
No full textImages of space are one of the most recognizable intersections of science and art. While many are able to appreciate the beauty of these pictures, many don’t understand the underlying physics that allow for the production of these images. This paper will break down the process of astronomical image creation into three main categories: telescopes, cameras, and filters. Telescopes are the lens through which we are able to see the universe, and without them, the amount of astronomical objects and structures we could detect would be limited. While telescopes are able to reach past the limits of human vision, they still have restraints on the possible image resolution; luckily some of these resolution restraints can be counteracted using adaptive optics. Cameras act as detectors of light, and allow for the images seen through telescopes to be recorded permanently. Along with capturing images, there are also proposed theories of how the resolution of images can be further improved with the use of specific light detection techniques such as Spatial Mode Demultiplexing (SPADE). Finally, filters allow for the colorful images of space we are familiar with. Without filters that detect certain wavelengths of light, our vibrant pictures of space would be left shades of black and white
