Cash Transfers in Korea: Is This the Best Policy to Increase Fertility?
No full textAs of today, Korea has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. Its population is both aging and declining, raising concern over what results this demographic change will bring about and whether or not anything should be done about it. This paper will explain why an aging population is bad for a country’s economy and how a declining population can either improve or hinder economic growth. Korea has recently been fighting its low fertility rate with pro-natalist policies, such as child care, cash incentives, maternity and paternity leave, tax benefits, and more. This paper seeks to examine the effectiveness of one of these pronatalist policies– cash payments. To do so, pre-existing literature on the effectiveness of cash payments in improving fertility will be analyzed and presented here. Additionally, literature on alternative pronatal policies to cash incentives will be examined here to determine whether or not cash incentives are the best policy option to increase fertility or if another policy is more effective

Effect of Coronal Mass Ejections on Solar Wind and its Earthly Consequences
No full textThis paper delves into the profound influence of coronal mass ejections on solar wind and their subsequent impacts on Earth. By exploring the Sun\u27s corona and the mechanisms behind these solar phenomena, we elucidate how CMEs are driven by magnetic reconnection processes starting at the Sun’s core to the its corona. The analysis provided highlights the dynamic interactions between the ejected solar plasma and Earth\u27s magnetosphere, which can lead to significant geomagnetic storms affecting technological infrastructures and communication systems on Earth. Through theoretical models, this paper presents a framework for understanding the magnetic structures of CMEs and their evolution as they traverse interplanetary space. The critical role of the solar wind in shaping space weather phenomena is also examined, illustrating its influence through the heliosphere and its interaction with Earth\u27s protective magnetic field. This investigation not only enhances our understanding of fundamental astrophysical processes but also underscores the necessity of monitoring and predicting space weather to mitigate potential disruptions to modern technological systems. No full textMental health disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD), are significant public health challenges due to their high prevalence and comorbidity. Conventional treatments present issues such as delayed onset and aversive side effects, highlighting a dire need for novel therapeutic strategies. Ketamine is a promising new treatment, given its rapid onset of action and potential effectiveness across various psychiatric conditions. Initially developed as an anesthetic, ketamine’s off-label use has revealed promising results in alleviating symptoms of MDD, PTSD, GAD, and SAD. Ketamine’s modulation of glutamate levels via its mechanism of action as a glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist may explain its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. Despite promising findings, such as significant symptom reduction in MDD and PTSD, and improvement in anxiety ratings for GAD and SAD, the research is in its infancy, with limitations including small sample sizes, potential biases, and a lack of direct comparisons across disorders. Consequently, this review underscores the necessity for further large-scale, double-blind studies to understand ketamine’s efficacy and mechanism of action fully
Composing the End and What Comes After: Death and the Musical Afterlife in Tod und Verklärung and “Im Abendrot”
No full textStrauss’ quotation of Tod und Verklärung (1889) at the end of “Im Abendrot” of the Vier Letzte Lieder (1948) ties the two works together in their treatment of death as a transition from the physical world to the spiritual afterlife. The philosophical significance of this quotation is contextualized by the evolution of Strauss’ philosophical and aesthetic worldview from his early embrace of Schopenhauer to his later conversion to a Nietzschean perspective. This paper draws on both 19th century and current music philosophy to evaluate Strauss’ treatment of death from both a metaphysical and a semantic perspective. I first critique Tod und Verklärung as a representative of Schopenhauerian musical philosophy in practice. Then, taking into account Strauss’ philosophical development and the effects of the Second World War from Strauss’ perspective – namely, the irrevocable damage done to the reputation of German music – I interpret Strauss’ return to the idealist theme of life after death and to his youth through the quotation from Tod und Verklärung. I find that despite the similarity between the texts of the pieces, Strauss’ philosophical intent in “Im Abendrot” is unclear and open to very different interpretations compared to the transparently Schopenhauerian Tod und Verklärung
