    This paper introduces the fundamental concepts of the fractal metric space, contraction mappings and iterated function systems (IFS). Similarity dimensions are discussed with applications to the Generalized Cantor Set and Sierpinski N-gon. In his research at Stanford University, Dr. Daniel Herschlag’s group focuses on understanding the complexities of catalysis, utilizing ketosteroid isomerase (KSI) as a model. KSI catalysis relies on three fundamental factors: stabilizing the transition state, destabilizing the substrate-bound ground state, and stabilizing the oxyanion intermediate. Extensive research has shown that these structural motifs can also be translated into the context of other enzymes. In examining these elements, Herschlag identifies enzymatic structures essential for achieving efficient catalysis and sets the foundation for rational enzyme design

    How Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis Articulate (Mis)Representation in Written Media

    We aim to find context for quotes used in sports articles in the form of transcripts, and use natural language processing techniques to determine ways in which quotes can be taken out of context and misconstrued by the article audience. This research focuses on exploring topic-related and emotional discrepancies between articles and the sources they cite. To find these discrepancies, we use a multi-corpus topic distribution comparison method and NRC-lex emotion analysis to find differences between sport articles and sport interview transcripts. We found several factors that influence a topic modeling approach to determining context; the number of topics related to the quote and its context. Through emotion analysis we found that articles tend to use more negative language than the transcripts the quotes came from

    The Physics of Topological Insulators

    Topological insulators are a subclass of quantum materials, characterized by their insulating bulk and conductive surfaces. In this paper, we explain the physics of topological insulators. We will present an introduction to topological band theory, which uses topological invariants to classify the states of band insulators. Topological invariant is any quantized property of a geometric shape that remains unchanged under smooth deformation. Mapping the mathematical definition to physics, we will apply this idea to the Hamiltonians of physical systems. We will use the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Model as an example to demonstrate the fundamental principle of bulk-boundary correspondence in the study of topological insulators

    The Green Bond Market: A Comparative Analysis

    Green bonds are a type of fixed income debt instrument in which an issuer (typically governments, corporations, or financial institutions) borrows large sums of money from investors to use in ‘green’ projects. These are projects that are sustainable and socially responsible in areas as diverse as renewable energy, energy efficiency, green transportation, responsible waste management, etc. Though the market has grown substantially since 2007, the current state of policies and regulation is deemed to be quite weak. There are two international standards that define that provide guidelines for firms to follow when initiating an issuance, but these are voluntary. In terms of national policies, China, India, and Singapore are the three countries which have a mandatory policy framework in place. The Singaporean government has also established a grant scheme that provides financial help for firms to incentivize issuances, whereas China has certain tax and rebate programs at local levels for the same reason. This paper analyzes the impact of the policies in each of the three economies, because by stimulating the green bond market, governments induce firms to take on a greater number of sustainable projects and make them greener. Building off these cases, as well as drawing from empirical evidence, policy recommendations are provided for other countries, or conjunction of countries, to implement to allow for universal agreement. The three policy suggestions include- i) a universal standard/law for regulation and disclosures, ii) a tier-based certification system, and iii) more financial incentives from governments, following in the footsteps of China and Singapore
