    Guatemala Mission Trip

    We were privileged to travel to Antigua, Guatemala over Spring Break to provide primary health care services to coffee plantation workers and their families. Our team consisted of 10 students, 4 faculty members from the Inman College of Nursing, and several alumni working in various nursing specialties post-graduation. Among the most meaningful aspects of our trip was getting to live out our Christian calling to service in the spirit of Christ by combining our burgeoning nursing skills with a want to serve the people of Antigua. Students triaged patients, performed generalized and focused assessments, provided interpretation services, and assisted in dispensing medication to facilitate the delivery of high-quality, holistic health care. Our team also piloted a prototype of a new electronic health records system that will affect long-term health outcomes in the community by increasing accountability and compliance. Another highlight was collaborating with several local providers from the region who helped connect and refer our patients to specialty services within the community. The students and faculty collaborated to foster an insightful learning experience while serving the local community of Antigua. We gained introspection related to healthcare in foreign countries. Humbleness was a motif of this experience as we realized the privileges we are granted in the United States. We grew in our assessment skills and applied holistic healthcare to the patient’s.     Thermal Tolerance and Behavioral Responses of Sunburst Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)

    Global warming and climate change pose significant threats to aquatic ecosystems, altering water temperature and affecting the behavior, physiology, and survival of fishes and other populations. The effects of global warming on aquatic biodiversity can be evaluated by realizing how freshwater animals respond to thermal stress. This experiment examines the thermal tolerance and behavior of Sunburst Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) via a procedure of increasing and decreasing water temperature and observing changes in dissolved oxygen levels and stress signs. These factors will be measured and observed in comparison to the control tank, where the conditions will be kept the same, excluding the temperature factor. Using a Fluval M50 submersible heater, temperatures will be increased from 24°C to 30°C in regulated increments. The fish\u27s behavior, including swimming patterns, gasping, reproduction, and, if viable, loss of equilibrium, will be observed during this temperature change. The predicted results will establish Sunburst Platy\u27s thermal limits and provide an insight into how warming waters can impact their activity and viability. The findings form part of a whole of information relating to climate change effects on freshwater fish species and the importance of close observation of temperature shifts within natural and man-made aquatic ecosystems

    This proposal aims to bring Mary Pope Osborne’s beloved Magic Tree House book series to life as an exciting, educational television show for late elementary-grade children. With 63 books in the series, it has captivated young readers since 1992, following siblings Jack and Annie on thrilling historical fantasy adventures. These stories seamlessly blend education with adventure, making them a perfect fit for today’s elementary-grade children. The show will stay true to the heart of the books while expanding and modernizing the content to fit a 30-minute TV format. Key expansions include enriching dialogue, adding world-building for pacing, and aging up the main characters to make them more relatable to a broader audience. An ensemble cast will also be introduced, ensuring diverse representation. The timing for this adaptation couldn’t be better. Many of the original readers are now parents themselves, and they are eager to introduce their children to the series they grew up with, creating a built-in audience. Despite the series’ immense popularity, there has yet to be a screen adaptation in the United States, making this the perfect opportunity to tap into an uncharted market. The series fosters critical thinking about history, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking—qualities that are increasingly valued in children’s programming. This adaptation would be a refreshing step away from the over-stimulating distractions that currently rule the children’s television scene. The presentation will showcase an example of how to adapt a scene from Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first book in the series, with detailed casting suggestions, location ideas, and cinematographic considerations. With its unique blend of adventure, education, and nostalgia, the Magic Tree House TV show must be adapted now in order to spark curiosity about history, encourage creativity in children, and facilitate lasting memories among families

    Integrating Workplace Violence Prevention into Nursing Curriculum: Preparing Future Nurses for Safer Practice ​

    Nurses are under attack. 80% of nurses have experienced some form of workplace violence (WPV), which is seen as “part of the job.” Unfortunately, the agency responsible for protecting nurses, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), only offers voluntary guidelines. We have determined that nursing students are the best group to educate about WPV prevention in healthcare. Including this teaching to fit within their pre-clinical requirements, only needing one faculty to teach with an average salary of $80k, to further help set what should be foundational skills. By adding WPV de-escalation techniques and adequately preparing students prior to graduation. Belmont’s nurses will be able to help set a standard of education and prevention of WPV. Starting the courses in the fall 2025 semester nursing students will learn what they can do to reduce the possibility of WPV, how to recognize the signs leading to WPV, and how to address the aftermath of an unavoidable situation. Currently employers are responsible for educating and protecting their nurses from WPV, and most often, nurses are met with “what could you have done better?” By educating nursing students early in their careers, they can better handle the stressful nature and stigmas surrounding WPV

    Implementation of a Standardized Discharge Process at a Substance Use Disorder Inpatient Treatment Facility

    Project Title: Implementation of a Standardized Discharge Process at a Substance Use Disorder Inpatient Treatment Facility Background and Rationale: Currently, millions of adults are suffering from substance use disorder. For those in recovery, 45-55% of these adults will relapse within the first 6 months of leaving rehab, and due to loss of tolerance to their preferred drug of choice, these clients are at higher risk of mortality. This transition of care phase is a critical time period for clients to avoid relapse while navigating recovery challenges independently, and evidence supports standardized, intentional, client-centered discharge planning to improve transitional care outcomes. SMART Aim: To create a sustainable, empowering, evidence-based, standardized discharge process that will be implemented at Samaritan Recovery Community in 90% of the intensive residential program discharges to home by December 2024. Methods: Three Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles were implemented, and one educational workshop was held. In-person reminders and preparation for each discharge were held once a week for staff. Compliance rates were measured using direct observation and audits from a standardized discharge checklist given to staff. Nurses, providers, and staff were interviewed to help identify barriers to regular performance of the discharge process. Outcomes: From week 1 to week 6, 56%-86% of clients received the standardized discharge process. After 2 PDSA cycles, in week 7, 100% of clients received the implemented standardized discharge process. 66.67% of staff reported this discharge process increased their workload. Overall, the newly implemented discharge process at Samaritan Recovery Community has reignited the community\u27s commitment to enhancing the discharge process, leading to future improvements to come to better support clients

Cervilite is engineered to attend to comfort with the potential for multiple positions, as it is height adjustable with respect to body and head size. The padded headpiece with a lazy susan attachment allows total freedom of the head in all directions, keeping the user’s head free to move. Cervilite aims to improve the user’s ability to move while enhancing the ability to be upright for an extended period by minimizing discomfort and strain. This flexible design was created for users who endure chronic discomfort to be mobile recreationally, as well as improve physical endurance and toughness
