Adding Guidance-Based Stylistic Controls to Flow Models for Coherent Audio Generation
No full textThis research introduces a novel approach to audio generation that leverages guidance-based flow models to create audio. These models operate by learning latent representations of audio and decoding them. A project-based course was implemented where students explored generative audio using Stable Audio Open. Using chords, melody, and beat as core guidance mechanisms, a custom guidance model was trained using mix tracks from Belmont University’s audio archives to steer generation toward higher stylistic coherence. Structured listening tests were conducted to evaluate the perceptual impact of the guidance model on audio quality. Preliminary results suggest that guided generation improved musicality compared to baseline outputs. Beyond technical outcomes, this approach highlights the value of interactive, hands-on learning in audio AI education where students learn by deeply engaging with model training, evaluation, and creative iteration
Parenting and Culture Orientation
No full textParenting styles vary across cultures and have a major impact on children’s and adolescents’ development into emerging adulthood. Parental warmth and control are two dimensions of parenting typically used to categorize parenting styles (Parker et al., 1979). Parental warmth is correlated with lower externalizing (e.g., aggression) and internalizing (e.g., depression) behaviors/symptoms over time, but the influence of parental control on the same behaviors is dependent on culture (Rothenberg et al., 2020). While some research has used categories of parenting style when relating parenting to culture orientation (i.e., individualism vs. collectivism; Martinez et al., 2007), there is a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between parental warmth/control and culture orientation, especially using global samples that do not seek to differentiate outcomes based solely on country or region. This study explored the relationship between cultural orientation and parental control/warmth experienced by emerging adults during their childhood and adolescence. A global sample of emerging adults (N = 150; Mage = 24.24) completed a survey via Prolific that measured demographics, cultural orientation, and parental bonding. In our presentation on The Great Gatsby (2013), we explored the film’s rich symbolism, historical context, and groundbreaking costume design. We highlighted how director Baz Luhrmann’s lavish visuals and modern soundtrack reimagined Fitzgerald’s critique of the American Dream, while Catherine Martin’s Oscar-winning costumes deepened character arcs through color, fabric, and silhouette. By analyzing settings like East Egg and the Valley of Ashes, we underscored the era’s social divides, and through characters like Gatsby and Daisy. We explored and examined themes of illusion versus reality. Our project also connected the film’s fashion to real-world trends, showcasing its lasting cultural impact.
Through this project, we explored how costume design plays a crucial role in telling a story. We analyzed costume designer Catherine Martin’s research and collaboration with Prada which helped bring the 1920s to life. Catherine’s contribution to costuming added deeper meaning to the film and connected it to the culture of the 1920s. For example, her use of Gatsby’s pastel suits and formal outfits shows how he carefully builds his image and the same can be said for the use of colors to depict personalities and character. This helped us explore the fashion in films and how it helps show a character’s personality and social status through dress. By contextualizing these details, we better understood how the film highlights class divisions, wealth, and the idea of chasing an illusion through dress.
In conclusion, our project will show a new perspective on how visual elements like costume design contribute to a film’s deeper themes and messaging. Costuming is not just for style, but a powerful way to tell a story and express important ideas
Sensory Space: Redefining Accessibility based on Lived Experience

Over 25% of US adults are disabled, and more will become disabled during their lives, making this problem relevant to many. To address this disparity in location accessibility information, this project has focused on creating a prototype website designed with disabled users in mind, providing accessibility information targeting their specific needs based on customer reviews rather than business claims. This project integrates reviews and business information collected using web-scraping techniques, reviews and business information from open-source datasets of various review platforms, and feedback from disabled individuals as to what they would like to see on a review website designed for them
Faith in Conflict: Religious Divisions and Conflict in Iraq
Get PDFThis paper will examine the religious divide present in the country of Iraq. As history is looked back at, a series of events took place that would in due time have power on a split between the region religiously: Shia Islam, Sunni Islam, Kurds, Arabs, and Christians. Understanding the history of this land is paramount to understanding the split that occurred. I argue that religious differences create a level of conflict due to a corrupt government. This allows room for extremist groups like ISIS to grow their power further in rule. Exploring the factor of geographical location and size of these groups also becomes vital. For Minority groups, like Christians, they often find themselves conforming to bigger groups out of fear of conflict. This further gives the majority more power to continue
PSYCHOLOGY: Can You Hear Color?
No full textAttention and concentration are used daily in a college student’s life because their brain needs to be constantly working for school and outside factors. How students study can impact their academic performance and in turn their mental and physical health. The purpose of the study is designed to further understand the impact of auditory stimuli on an individual\u27s level of concentration when performing cognitive tasks. An experimental design was conducted using college students to assess the impact of brown noise and violet noise on concentration. The two groups both completed the Stroop color-word test and their reaction times were calculated which were later then compared between the two. We hypothesized that brown noise would result in higher levels of concentration and violet noise would be more irritable and cause lower levels of concentration. Understanding these relationships could be helpful to the greater population for developing healthier interventions when trying to concentrate
Enchanted Glade: Sonata for Marimba
No full textEnchanted Glade is an advanced marimba solo in sonata form. One notable feature of this piece is its harmonic motion; the tonal center changes frequently and often moves to unexpected keys. A left-hand octave motif helps to signal when these harmonic changes happen. Additionally, these harmonic changes often take place through enharmonic chord relations, such as a German augmented sixth chord in one key being interpreted as a dominant 7 chord in a new key. Furthermore, extended harmony is used throughout the piece, often creating harmonic ambiguity by implying multiple potential chord interpretations.
In regard to melody, the piece naturally has a primary and secondary theme as part of its sonata form. However, between the primary and second theme, each transitional key area has its own distinct melodic fragments. These fragments recur alongside the primary and secondary themes in the closing section of the exposition and throughout the development.
Although the work is not strictly programmatic, the title Enchanted Glade was chosen to represent the way that the piece moves through multiple key areas and melodic ideas. In a magical forest filled with fantastical creatures, this enchanted glade finds itself frequented by myriad mystical entities. Each creature’s unique magic permeates the glade, creating a distinct melodic and harmonic landscape that continues to transform as more and more creatures pass through the glade
A Workplace Violence Prevention Initiative in Nursing
Get PDFWorkplace violence (WPV) in Emergency Departments (EDs) is a growing issue that affects nurses\u27 safety, mental health, and overall patient care. Nurses frequently face verbal abuse, physical assaults, and threats, with 81.6% reporting at least one violent incident in the past year. ED nurses experience the highest prevalence, leading to increased stress, burnout, and staff turnover, which negatively impacts hospital efficiency and patient outcomes.
Several factors contribute to WPV, including understaffing, inadequate conflict de-escalation training, lack of recognition of potential violence, and underreporting of incidents. Additional challenges include high patient volumes, insufficient security measures, and hospital cultures that discourage reporting violence.
To address WPV, a key recommendation is implementing the Broset Violence Checklist, a tool designed to assess a patient\u27s risk of violence within 24 hours. It evaluates behaviors such as confusion, irritability, boisterousness, verbal threats, physical threats, and attacks on objects. Effective prevention strategies, better security protocols, and improved training programs are needed to protect healthcare workers and ensure a safer work environment. Tennessee is home to about two hundred emergency rooms. To ensure adequate outreach and distribution of resources, a budget of $16,500 to cover the cost of printing, laminating, and shipping of the checklist to each hospital system with emergency rooms in Tennessee. The budget would also account for the technology application of the checklist and additional security measures.
The implementation of this checklist and additional education for care professionals would begin in the next quarter which is marked by April 1st. This initial phase introduces the checklist and how it can be effectively implemented. Emergency rooms across Tennessee would be issued research that has been collected, along with the Broset Violence Checklist and instructions on how it can be implemented practically at the bedside. Each emergency room unit would also be instructed to keep track of the number of times this checklist was used, the scores that were obtained being a one or higher, and for the scores indicating present possible violence the number of times preventative measures were taken. At the end of the quarter, the data will be complied and evaluated for effectiveness. Additionally, at the end of the second quarter, nurses, providers, and team leaders would have the opportunity to share and reflect on the checklist. Following the collection and analysis of feedback the checklist and subsequent research would continue to support evidence-based practice and interventions
