Synthesis of a Diazonium Perfluorocyclobutane Monomer Using Improved Coupling Method for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
The object of this research is the synthesis of a diazonium perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) monomer, with the ultimate goal for a diazonium PFCB polymer. The polymer is designed as an alternative electrolyte for Nafion® polymer, a commonly employed material in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The diazonium PFCB monomer synthesis is designed with 5 steps. Currently, we working on the coupling reaction (step 4) of 4,4’-bis (2-bromo-tetrafluoroethyoxy)- 3,3’-bis (chlorosulfonyl)-biphenyl and 4-acetamidobenzenesulfonamide with base catalyst N,N-Diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA). Specifically the objective is replacing the triethyl amine with DIPEA for an improved reaction. The progress of the reaction and the purity of the each step product are checked with diverse characterization techniques, including thin layer chromatography (TLC), and proton/fluorine nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)

Every Triangle is the Shadow of an Equilateral Triangle
The Euler line of a triangle is a classical object with an interesting optical illusion: As one translates the vertices of the triangle, the Euler line appears to pop into 3D space! The goal of this project is to formalize that intuition by realizing the triangle as the projected image of an equilateral triangle in R^3, where the projection maps the normal line through its centroid to the Euler line of the image.
In this presentation, we will motivate the problem and showcase some of the geometry using GeoGebra activities, and we will prove some partial results: Every triangle in R^2 is the orthogonal projection of an equilateral triangle in R^3, and this projection takes centroids to centroids. We also have a procedure for finding an equilateral triangle which is in perspective with an arbitrary triangle in R^2
Shifting Perspectives: Valuing Art For Its Usefulness, Not Just Its Aesthetics
Art is everywhere. From paintings, to entertainment, even to gardening and architecture, art is an essential part of society and culture. However, art can frequently be trapped in its own bubble, seen as something of not much use to “real” professionals such as physicians, therapists, or scientists. This line of thinking discredits the flexibility of art. It is only through the analysis of art’s impact on society that one can see the broad array of disciplines that art can affect and thus see the true value of art. Focusing primarily on visual art, I seek to place a value on art outside of purely artistic circles. Through comparing various studies, it becomes clear that art has value outside of artistic circles because it can improve mental health, it evokes an emotional response, it preserves cultures, and it can be used politically. This conversation is important because art is an integral part of all societies, and learning about what value it has outside of purely artistic endeavors can be helpful to all jobs and all people
Photographs of The Iliad
These two pictures come from a portrait project for my digital photography class that is part of the ILC focused on Homer’s Iliad. The idea for these portraits was to get central ideas from the Iliad and make pictures that imagine what the characters might look like, and how they might present themselves.
The first picture, “The Shape-Shifting Gods”, is supposed to detail how the Greek Gods continually change their form, misrepresent themselves as mortals, to interact with or manipulate the Greek or Trojan soldiers during, “The Iliad.” I used the natural sunlight coming in from a window that illuminates only half the face, leaving the other half in darkness, to give the subject the appearance of “two faces”. The light suggests that she is in the middle of a transformation, with the shaded part being how the original god appeared. It is now dramatic, with nothing subtle about her appearance, fitting for an epic tragedy.
The second image, “Dolon’s Fear”, represents the minor character of Dolon, a Trojan man who greatly overestimates his power and courage, and is sent at night to spy on the newly constructed Greek camp on the Trojan shores. Unfortunately for Dolon, he encounters Odysseus and Diomedes, two powerful Greek warriors, who interrogate him and manipulate him to confess his mission – “Certainly I will tell you everything,” he says, including how to kill the Trojan allies. This picture is supposed to show the fear and surprise that Dolon felt when he came across Odysseus and Diomedes. The background was important to this picture, it needed to be dark, so I chose a dark tunnel under the Hoover Dam with the lighting coming from a construction light, which perfectly lit the face. All his supplication was to no avail – the Greek Diomedes chops off his head.
Overall, this helps the reader visualize the characters and the things that the characters do. In a way, it makes them seem more tactile and real. It makes their actions and them themselves feel closer to you because you have some form of understanding of how they look and act
Diffusion MRI-Consistent Tractography with Resting State fMRI: Preliminary Steps
Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is usually utilized to identify white matter in the brain, relying on water diffusion patterns to measure microstructure and connectivity. New work has shown that structural imaging, such as T1-weighted imaging and fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), can produce tractography with performance levels consistent with diffusion tractography. Although this changed our understanding of tractography, further investigation into the ability of functional imaging is not established well in existing literature. In this study, we investigated the ability of resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to produce white matter streamlines that agree with what is outlined in diffusion tractography. This work outlines the preliminary steps toward implementing a teacher-student pipeline using resting-state fMRI to evaluate its consistency with diffusion-based approaches
Spatial Patterns of Salamander Density Across Human Disturbance Gradients in Warner Parks
Amphibians are sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance, making them valuable indicators of recreational impacts in urban parks. This study examines salamander occurrence across five research sites within Warner Parks, Nashville, Tennessee, which differ in trail density and foot traffic intensity. Salamander observations were compiled from two sources: field surveys conducted in Summer 2025 and iNaturalist records spanning the past 10 years. For spatial analysis, each site was defined by a 200 m radius buffer to include local habitat, and trail networks were further buffered at 10 m, 25 m, and 50 m to quantify salamander occurrence relative to trail proximity using point-in-polygon analysis in QGIS. Salamander densities were generally highest within 10 m of trails, with a decline at 25 m and 50 m. iNaturalist records were heavily clustered near high-access areas, particularly around the Nature Center, while field surveys detected salamanders more evenly across sites, including locations further from trails. Correlation analysis indicated a weak negative relationship between density and distance from trails (r = –0.29), and one-way ANOVA showed no significant difference in density across trail buffer distances (F = 1.40, p = 0.26). These results suggest that salamander detection is shaped by both anthropogenic accessibility and habitat availability. Community-science data are influenced by observer accessibility, whereas systematic field surveys capture more cryptic populations. By integrating long-term iNaturalist observations with contemporary field surveys and applying spatial buffers around trails and sites, this study highlights how recreational infrastructure affects amphibian detection and emphasizes the importance of considering anthropogenic disturbance in urban park management and conservation planning
