    Refining Chlorosulfonation Methods for the Synthesis of a Perfluoroalkyl Arylsulfonimide (PFSI) Monomer

    Proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are sources of energy that are clean, quiet, and highly responsive to changes in power needs, making them promising for use in automobiles and other portable power devices. The electrolyte of a PEM cell–the layer responsible for conductivity–is a polymer membrane, commonly consisting of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers. In place of the PFSA polymers, perfluoroalkyl arylsulfonimide (PFSI) polymers are expected to improve the efficiency of PEM fuel cells with better stability and proton conductivity. The trifluovinylether (TFVE) aryl perfluorosulfonamide monomer is a new PFSI monomer proposed to fulfill these benefits once polymerized. The previous six-step synthesis of the monomer has been refined to a more time and cost-effective five-step synthesis by using a slightly altered, commercially available starting material. The new starting material was successfully brominated in the first reaction step to protect the trifluorvinyl ether double bond. Our research focused on performing the subsequent chlorosulfonation reaction. Through reflux, filtration, and drying, the crude chlorosulfonation product was obtained for multiple trials but requires further purification and characterization before procession of the synthesis

    Crystallization is one of the main goals when it comes to purity. Through dissolving a solid, heating it and cooling it can allow for a crystalline structure to form. The crystalline structure created is pure, and all the impurities will dissolve in the mother liquor. This is a foundational idea of crystallization. Tb(bpy)2(NO3)3 (bpy = 2,2’-bipyridine) is a complex synthesized by refluxing the homoleptic complex Tb(NO3)3 and what will become its bidentate ligand bpy. Not only are crystals important for purity but Tb(bpy)2(NO3)3 also has luminescent properties making it an excellent candidate to be a chemical sensor

Their objectives were to to host an influencer content creation event promoted across multiple accounts, to revamp Bend and Zen’s social media presence, to create a Patreon to bring in extra income, and to reach out to apartment complexes nearby to promote year-round engagement

The issue being addressed and investigated here, is what factors determine this behavior and to what effect? For example, do temperature changes lead them to decide to migrate? Does salinity or depth determine how far up the river they go? What correlates with the rivers where they are common versus therivers they avoid
