Foreign Involvement and Economic Outcomes in Coups

    Get PDF
A variety of factors come into play when determining economic outcomes. One of these factors is tied to political stability. After coup events, the literature finds that economies perform worse overall. This literature has explored other factors tied to coup events, such as overall political stability and the effects of different governing types on economies. Previous methods of exploring coups did not permit foreign intervention to take an active role, or even any role in most cases, in their models. This study will explore the correlation between economic output, utilizing GDP data from the Penn World Table, and foreign intervention during a coup situation. At the time of writing, this paper does not have conclusive results

Exploration of La La Land Costume Analysis

The film La La Land portrays modern life in Los Angeles for struggling creatives who are navigating love and career. The film does a fantastic job of costuming and mixing contemporary and 50s fashion while showing the distinct differences between characters. We studied the methods by watching the movie and researching adequately, and once you see their difference within costuming, it really makes the film worth watching. We discovered that this unique fusion adds to the film’s romantic dilemma and serves as a narrative technique that portrays the characters and reflects their journeys through life, art, and careers. Throughout our analysis we learned that Mia is always dressed in bright colors which is synonymous with old Hollywood glamour. These colors reflect her dreams of becoming a famous actress and her optimistic attitude. In our analysis we also learned that Sebastian wears classy and tailored pieces that show his dedication to being a jazz musician. These costumes develop throughout the film, discreetly reflecting their personal growth and the changes in their relationship dynamic. Through this film, we discovered that costuming is vital in storytelling and character-building, it also enhances the tone and embraces the emotional depth of the characters. Recognizing these crucial details makes La La Land compelling and proves the importance of costume design in movies which can only be discovered through deep analysis and exploration

Engaging the Community WellCore Series: How a Belmont Honors Collective tackled the problem of the perceived lack of engagement with Belmont students volunteering in the local Nashville Community.

    Get PDF
As part of their Honors College requirement, students are required to take Project Planning and Execution classes during their junior year where students utilize “team-based, problem-solving learning strategies coupled with individual research and application”. This year, a group of five female Honor students formed a small group they coined the “Caring Catalyst Collective”. The group perceived a lack of engagement from Belmont students with volunteer opportunities in the Nashville community and beyond. To combat this issue, they sought for tangible ways to inspire a boost of engagement of Belmont students with local Nashville non-profits and organizations, in addition to helping students feel motivated to serve from gaining crucial student, faculty, and staff volunteers’ perspectives. By hosting the WellCore series, “Engaging the Community”- consisting of four different seminars featuring 3-5 panelists and one student interviewer, they were able to bring volunteer opportunities directly to Belmont students. Hoping to incentivize attendance and engagement, they themed each panel around a diverse WellCore theme: emotional, cultural, intellectual, and environmental, that students need to attend to graduate. The series lasted two weeks with two WellCores focused on bringing in non-profit and community representatives that could speak on behalf of their organization about their volunteer work, mission, and needs, and two WellCores focused on bringing Belmont student, faculty, and staff perspectives in hopes to inspire and enlighten students on the importance of service in their lives. At the SPARK Symposium on April 16th, 2025, at 8AM on Belmont’s campus, the Collective will be sharing the insights they’ve gained through hosting these panels, engaging in deep conversation with the incredible panelists, and presenting the data and feedback they received from those in attendance

Classification of Breast Cancer Histology Using pretrained CNNs

    No full text
Breast cancer is one of the most deadly cancers among women, while analysis of biopsies remains the gold standard for diagnosis. Thus, integration of Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) into the analysis and classification of histology imaging has significantly advanced the field of pathology. This study will focus on developing a CNN to classify histological images to assist in breast cancer diagnoses. More specifically, we will be leveraging transfer learning via specified pre-trained models on a dataset of Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained breast biopsy microscopy images. This approach utilizes fine-tuning of pretrained models, image processing and augmentation, and dynamic learning rate scheduling

    EATING BEHAVIORS IN MENTAL HEALTH

    No full text
This study investigated whether conscientiousness predicts disordered eating behaviors in late adolescents diagnosed with eating disorders while controlling for gender. It also explored the association between body dissatisfaction and total depression. Late adolescents (aged 18-22; M = 20.38, SD =1.45) diagnosed with eating disorders (N=37) were recruited from the Prolific platform to complete an online self-report survey via Qualtrics. In the survey, participants answered questions about demographics, disordered eating behavior, body dissatisfaction, depression, and personality. Once all of the participants completed the survey they were compensated $2.50 via Prolific. Contrary to expectations, conscientiousness did not predict eating disorder behavior after controlling for gender (b=.053, SE= .261, t(33) = .203, p= .840, 95% CI [-.478, .584], sr2= .00). Not only this, but at odds with our second hypothesis, it was found that a higher depression score was not significantly associated with body dissatisfaction (r(35), p= .093, r2= .078). These findings could suggest that other factors (e.g. other personality traits, stress) may be more important in predicting eating disorder behavior and depression in individuals diagnosed with eating disorders. Future research could help predetermine factors that would help detect the onset of disordered eating and body dissatisfaction

    Cornelia Fort Airpark

    Get PDF
Cornelia Fort Airpark is an abandoned private airport that has been turned into a festival space, park, and biking trail for the people of Nashville. The Airport operated from the 1940s to 2011 until it was deemed unusable after the Cumberland River flooded Nashville in 2010. The park now hosts the Cornelia Fort Pickin\u27 Party every summer, a community event featuring folk artists, craft beer, and local vendors. It is named after the first female pilot to die on duty in WWII, Cornelia Fort. She grew up in Tennessee, and the airpark was built in the 1940s, not far from her family\u27s Tennessee farm. Visiting the park I collected research on various pain points such as a lack of lighting, no restrooms, lack of general keeping of the park and rest stops, and a lack of a developed playground for visiting families. This project focuses on reengineering Cornelia Fort Airpark\u27s northern entrance and playground area for visitors and the surrounding neighborhood

Transforming Giving: Insights from Donor Data Analysis for Community Healthcare

    No full text
Students collaborated with a local non-profit healthcare organization to analyze trends in donor data, applying statistical and data analysis techniques to uncover meaningful insights that support evidence-based decision-making in fundraising. This project explored key trends and addressed challenges in working with real-world healthcare donor data. The findings highlight the role of data science in driving positive change in community health while providing students with hands-on experience in applied analytics
