Learning Creativity and Connection
Creating a vibrant, innovative, and tangible place to spark inspiration and joy in adults and children hoping to aid both in various developmental stages. Based on theories of childlike joy, wonder, and creativity and applying research and evidence of the effects of immersive and experiential learning, this can bring parents and kids into a parallel learning experience engaging with the surrounding environment fully. Parents and other adults would leave this discovery museum, reminded of how they used to see the world. This place would incubate inspiration and leave an impression that Parents, children, and others would take with them, share with others, and apply to their careers
ESTABLISHING THE NARRATIVE – A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF NASHVILLE NEWSPAPER REPORTING DURING THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA
Public memory serves as the collective public consciousness – how a group of people remember a historical narrative and thus how they interpret and interact with their current environment. Journalism and news reporting plays a pivotal role in the creation of public memory. This study will analyze the differences in reporting between two Nashville-based newspapers, The Nashville Banner and The Tennessean, and how their reporting shaped public memory in Nashville. These publications are crucial to the Nashville community and how the public is informed. To properly conduct this research with narrow enough scope to get accurate results, this study will focus on the years 1960 – 1961, highlighting the sit-in movement and freedom rides that Nashville civil rights activists organized, as well as other important events. The results of this study will aid in understanding how Nashville reckons with its racial past and how journalists can be cognizant of their impact both in current public opinion and historical public memory, thus learning how to be intentional in utilizing that power
The Illusion of Inclusion
Nashville prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive city. Segregation is often discussed in a way that places it firmly in the past, when that could not be further from the truth. The supreme court case Brown v. Board of Education ruled racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional in 1954. After stalling for three years, Nashville’s school board implemented the plan to desegregate public schools in 1957. However, the plan would require twelve years to accomplish, and integration was never legally enforced. Through research regarding racial policies, attitudes, and patterns within Nashville, it becomes clear that Nashville schools have yet to become truly integrated
Faith in Action: How Christianity and Hinduism influenced the Nashville sit-ins and James Lawson
The public memory of nonviolent resistance is often centered on figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis, while James Jawson’s contributions remain equally transformative. Lawson, a Methodist minister, civil rights strategist, and educator, was a pioneer in nonviolent conflict resolution, blending moral philosophy with action to address systemic injustice. His conflict mediation trainings and speeches played a crucial role in shaping nonviolent resistance movements, emphasizing preparation, discipline, and a commitment to long-term societal transformation and viewing opponents as capable of change. Lawson championed the power of nonviolence as a means to dismantle systems of oppression and create paths to justice and equality. As the driving force behind nonviolent training workshops during the Nashville sit-ins, and other pivotal civil rights campaigns, Lawson’s teachings empowered activists to challenge injustice through deliberate and organized efforts, not only shaping the civil rights movement but also influencing conflict transformation practices more globally.
Despite facing pushback, including expulsion from Vanderbilt University, Lawson’s legacy has grown over time. Institutions, including Vanderbilt themselves, now honor his contributions and his principles continue to guide modern social justice movements. My research aims to explore the foundational principles and lasting impact of Lawson’s contributions to conflict mediation by focusing on the various religious influences that influenced his position
