    Field reconnaissance on seismic performance and functionality of Turkish industrial facilities affected by the 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake sequence

    On February 6th, 2023, an earthquake sequence with moment magnitudes (Mw) of 7.8 and 7.5 rocked southern and eastern Turkiye, affecting 15 million-residents and a significant portion of Turkiye’s industrial community. In the days following the earthquake sequence, a reconnaissance team was organized to visit the industrial districts in the five provinces of the earthquake region. While performance and functionality of 131 industrial facilities were inspected using the proposed data-collection protocols, 18 interviews with industrial representatives were conducted. The inspection and interview results show that the earthquake sequence had a significant impact on industrial facilities, resulting in enormous economic losses and business disruptions lasting three months to two years. While the sequence imposed severe demands on the facilities, their poor performance is mostly due to discrepancies between seismic design code requirements and building practice. The most affected facilities were found to be those built before 2000, as well as precast reinforced concrete structures with pin-supported roofs. As a result, these types of facilities in earthquake-prone areas are strongly advised to be re-evaluated. Furthermore, various nonstructural building components, such as claddings and equipment/machinery, were substantially damaged at the majority of the assessed sites, causing lengthy interruptions.     Equivalence for generalized Boolean functions

    Equivalence plays a key-role for the classification of functions between elementary abelian groups V(p) n and V(p) k . One distinguishes between affine equivalence, extended affine (EA) equivalence, and the most general CCZ-equivalence. Recently, there has been an increased interest in functions from elementary abelian groups V(p) n to cyclic groups Zpk . We initiate the study of equivalence for functions from V(p) n to Zpk . We show that CCZequivalence is more general than EA-equivalence. For some classes of functions, CCZ-equivalence reduces to EA-equivalence. We show that CCZ-equivalence between two functions from V(p) n to Zpk implies CCZ-equivalence of two associated vectorial functions from V(p) n to V(p) k .Austrian Science Fund (FWF

    How to be a good guest: American ethnographers in Turkey in the long 1968

    The article uncovers a forgotten chapter in the history of anthropology by revealing the experiences of American ethnographers in Turkey between 1967 and 1969. Using original archival documents and oral history interviews, it focuses on the trials of Professor Lloyd A. Fallers as well as doctoral students Michael Meeker, Peter Benedict, and June Starr in navigating Turkish bureaucracy and global politics. Conceptually, the article evaluates the case of anthropologists in Cold War Turkey from the perspective of hospitality studies with a particular focus on guest-to-guest relationships. Adopting the guests’ points of view shows us that hospitality assemblages are forged by other-oriented thinking and behaviour, which involves misunderstandings, empathy, and projection.     (Lived) Spaces of belonging, culture, and gender: Spatial practices of home for Syrian women in Istanbul

    Combining architectural and cultural anthropological approaches, this study explores the domestic lived spaces of Syrian women in Istanbul to understand how they create belonging in a new social and architectural setting and perform gender roles. We analyze data gathered from several types of dwellings according to the concept of spatial practice of Henri Lefebvre to explore how women’s daily life praxis fosters feelings of contentment and safety, and how they reflect on their previous homes in Syria through a lens of nostalgia. At the same time, we explore how houses in Syria are remembered via reflections on spatial changes. Methodologically, we rely on semi-structured interviews and mental map drawings of houses in Istanbul and reminisced houses from Syria. Ultimately, this research provides a fine-grained portrait of the (lived) space of Syrian women, showing how they reconstruct domestic lives through past/Syrian and current/Turkish spatial practices.European Union’s Horizon 202

    The effects of foreign acquisitions on the value of industry peers

    This paper studies how industry peers' stock prices respond when another firm in the industry is acquired by a foreign firm. The average stock price reactions of industry peers in horizontal foreign acquisitions around deal announcements are significantly negative. Peers' returns are more negative in growing, less specialized, and competitive industries. Moreover, the negative stock price reactions of industry peers are related to future decreases in their operating performance. Overall, these results suggest that foreign acquisitions have strong competitive effects for the industry peers of U.S. target companies

    Structural literacy in architectural studio learning

    Architectural education encompasses a multidisciplinary curriculum including design, theory, history, technology, environmental considerations, urban planning, social aspects, and professional practice. This study aims to investigate the extent to which students can effectively integrate structural concepts into architectural design. This examination takes place within the framework of a third-year architectural design studio course, where students advance their design processes with input from architectural design instructors and experts in structural concepts. To facilitate this endeavour, a simple visual screening form was introduced to aid in the learning process. The study utilises a newly generated survey, namely ‘Structural System Control Form’, which is inspired by the rapid visual screening forms, to assess the students’ comprehension of structural concepts during a 14-week architectural design studio. Employing a descriptive and correlational research approach, the study assesses the effectiveness of this integrated strategy in enhancing the students’ understanding of structural principles. The findings revealed a notable development among students who participated in the integrated approach, highlighting the value of feedback and evaluation from instructors versed in construction. Furthermore, the use of simplified structural models in students’ projects improved their understanding of structural concepts and their ability to incorporate them into their architectural representations

    In this study, we present the design and development evaluation of BalanSENS toward the realization of the Integrated Balance Rehabilitation (I-BaR) framework. BalanSENS is designed to encourage active participation by integrating multi-sensory information with the co-improvement of sensory and motor functions. Moreover, it can offer individual rehabilitation design with the integration of three phases. The first phase provides foot-ankle muscle activation and movement sensation development. In the second phase, sensory weighting skills and upper extremities independence can be improved by using multi-sensory input. In the last/stepping phase, walking parameters are aimed to be improved with modulated distance. The parallel manipulator is designed through simulations to determine actuation properties and analyze the load-bearing capacity and feasibility of the materials. Drawing from simulation outcomes, an operational 3 DoF platform is constructed to demonstrate their design suitability for the I-BaR framework. Furthermore, design evaluations demonstrated promising results in quantifying force and real-time data monitoring during the passive ankle preparation phase.TÜBİTA

    Understanding the role of spatial configuration on social behavior in educational buildings

    Educational buildings, which appear as a design problem when viewed through the historical process, appear as a whole of structures consisting of educational units of different functions and sizes, shaped through a main corridor space and attached to this main space. On the other hand, when educational buildings are considered through their plan schemes or spatial layouts, it is possible to say that they positively or negatively affect different but interrelated parameters such as students' potential to come together, their motivation in crowds, and their involvement with each other in social relations. In the space syntax theory, buildings are separated from each other in terms of programming; that behavior is shaped and determined by the configuration (strong programming) or possible new forms of behavioral patterns occurring against the layout (weak programming). This study uses a comparative methodology to investigate the effect of the spatial layout of educational buildings on how social interaction is generated and motivated in the relations of 'syntactic programs' in school settings. The study focuses on recess time behavior in relation to the spatial layout and uses behavior maps and space syntax methods to examine the effects of the spatial setups programming parameters in educational buildings. Results show that if an educational building has a flexible structure (weak programming) with its spatial organization, socialization is oriented naturally by the layout with enriched behavioral patterns. However, when the design starts to behave strongly programmed, social behavior becomes monotonous and prevented. As a result, this study shows the importance of understanding social logic in the architectural design of educational buildings in structuring social relationships. Revealing the relationships between these concepts is thought to guide the evaluation of the design criteria of educational buildings and the contents presented for new designs.Publisher versio

    Deep learning for diagnostic charting on pediatric panoramic radiographs

    Aim: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems are used in dentistry to ensure a more accurate and efficient diagnostic process. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the performance of a deep learning (DL) program for the detection and classification of dental structures and treatments on panoramic radiographs of pediatric patients. Materials and methods: In total, 4821 anonymized digital panoramic radiographs of children between 5 and 13 years of age were analyzed by YOLOv4, a CNN (Convolutional Neural Networks)-based object detection model. The ability to make a correct diagnosis was tested on samples from pediatric patients examined within the scope of the study. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 26.0 software. Results: The YOLOv4 model diagnosed the primary teeth, permanent tooth germs, and brackets successfully, with high F1 scores of 0.95, 0.90, and 0.76, respectively. Although this model achieved promising results, there were certain limitations for some dental structures and treatments, including fillings, root canal treatments, and supernumerary teeth. The architecture of the present study achieved reliable results, with some specific limitations for detecting dental structures and treatments. Conclusion: The detection of certain dental structures and previous dental treatments on pediatric panoramic radiographs by using a DL-based approach may provide early diagnosis of some dental anomalies and help dental practitioners to find more accurate treatment options by saving time and effort
