Populist appeals, emotions, and political mobilization
Populist politicians frequently employ anti-establishment appeals in their discourse by targeting an imagined or real power elite. Do such appeals have a mobilizing effect among voters? What role do the emotional responses of voters play in this process? We address these questions using a vignette experiment embedded into a nationally representative survey fielded in Turkey, a country where a populist party has long been in power. Our research design enables us to assess whether voters respond more positively to a populist framing of a call for mobilization on an issue compared to a non-populist framing, and whether their emotional responses act as mediators. We find that populist rhetoric indeed does have a mobilizing effect, though only for a low-cost form of political participation (signing a petition) and only among the constituency of the populist party. Turning to the role of emotions, we find that the populist framing of the issue led voters to report more discontent, despair, and anxiety, and these emotions mediate the positive influence of the populist message on mobilization. Thus, our study contributes to research on populism by highlighting the role of emotions in the mobilizing effect of populist discourse.Publisher versio
Gendered consumer responsibilization: The constitution of menopausal women as responsible feminine consumer subjects
Recent decades have witnessed menopause, an inevitable and natural bodily transition, come under the purview of the market. Menopausal women are increasingly expected to be informed entrepreneurs of their bodies, bringing this transition within the domain of self-regulation and responsibility. Using data emanating from institutionalized market actors (i.e., pharmaceutical and insurance companies, healthcare professionals) and the accounts of consumers, we investigate the construction of responsibility in the contested field of menopause. We show that the formation of the responsible feminine consumer subject is an adjustive process generated through contestations between different articulations of subjectivity. Specifically, we identify three subject formative subprocesses and show how gender is implicated in each. Instead of following a singular path, these subprocesses culminate in two distinct yet coexisting routes to responsibilization, either by appealing to the qualities of traditional feminine subjectivity or by aligning with postfeminist subjectivity. We extend existing theorizations by revealing how gender shapes the processes of responsible subject formation and broadening the investigation of consumer responsibilization to a personal and embodied level.Publisher versio
Longitudinal pathways to children's emotional eating behaviors: Mealtime technoference and child self-regulation
This study investigated the roles of parental mealtime technoference and child self-regulation in emotional eating behaviors (overeating and undereating) in Turkish preschool children. Data were collected from 203 children aged 36 to 76 months (M = 59.40, SD = 8.70) at Time 1 and 50 to 80 months (M = 65.54, SD = 7.03) at Time 2 across two academic semesters. Parents provided reports on their children's eating behaviors and mealtime technoference, while researchers evaluated the children's self-regulation. Cross-lagged path analyses revealed that emotional overeating in children at Time 1 was linked to lower parental mealtime technoference at Time 2, whereas parental mealtime technoference at Time 1 was associated with increased child emotional overeating at Time 2. Emotional undereating in children at Time 1 was linked to lower child self-regulation at Time 2. These findings underscore the bidirectional influences of child- and parent-driven factors on emotional eating, framed within the Transactional Human Development Model
Performance feedback, performance prospects, and firm search behavior: The role of institutional settings
The Behavioral Theory of the Firm (BTOF) posits that firms undertake R&D search when their current performance falls below their aspirations, reflecting a backward-looking driver of search, or when anticipated future performance is projected to fall short of targets, representing a forward-looking driver. However, little is known about how external contingencies influence the prominence of these search drivers. Drawing on the literature on institutions, we argue that financial systems in a country, a key aspect of firms' institutional settings, influence the salience of forward- and backward-looking drivers by shaping firms' temporal and cognitive orientations. Specifically, we propose that while firms in market-based financial systems are more responsive to performance expectations below targets, firms in bank-based financial systems are more responsive to performance below aspirations. We further argue that the influence of financial systems depends on firms' slack resources and equity dependence. Our analyses on a sample of 3,908 manufacturing firms from 24 countries corroborate these hypotheses, stressing the central role of institutional settings in shaping firms' R&D search behavior.Center for Public Choice and Market Process at the College of Charlesto
Comprehensive numerical study on the behavior of floating structures under challenging ocean conditions using wcsph
The main objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic motions of floating bodies under different wave conditions. A particle-based numerical method, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), is used due to its capabilities in modeling violent free surface flows. This work is based on five sub-steps. The first step focuses on ensuring the accuracy of the generated wave characteristics. Then, the heave motion of a point-absorber wave energy converter is examined under regular wave conditions with different power take-off (PTO) damping coefficients. After validating the proposed SPH scheme in a single degree of freedom motion, the roll decay of a rectangular floating body is investigated in the third step by comparing natural frequencies and damping coefficients with available literature data. Subsequently, the roll motion of a fixed floating structure under a wide-range regular wave system is simulated to obtain the corresponding Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs). Finally, the free body motion of a floating body under regular wave excitation is simulated and validated by experimental measurements, considering all rotational and translational motion characteristics. In the light of all simulation results, the proposed SPH numerical scheme can be considered as a useful tool for the design of effective and sustainable offshore structures.TÜBİTA
Information agreements
We define a (cooperative) informational bargaining problem, where several agents have to agree on the persuasion of a receiver. The bargaining set includes payoff vectors that can be generated by information structures and disagreement leads to an exogenous benchmark that may involve full or no information. We characterize the existence of an agreement that benefits all agents when preferences are state-independent. Our characterization yields conditions that depend only on the payoff structure but are independent of the prior beliefs in some cases. We analyze Pareto efficient information structures in two applications: selection environments, where the receiver picks the best agent, and the bargaining between a retailer platform and a regulator on consumer privacy regulation
Construction and equivalence for generalized boolean functions
Recently in Çeşmelioğlu, Meidl (Adv. Math. Commun.,18, 2024), the study of EA-equivalence and CCZ-equivalence for functions from Vn(p) to the cyclic group Zpk has been initiated, where Vn(p) denotes an n-dimensional vector space over Fp. Amongst others it has been shown that there exist functions from Vn(2) to Z4 which are CCZ-equivalent but not EA-equivalent. We extend these results to larger classes of functions from Vn(p) to Zpk. We then discuss constructions of generalized bent functions from Vn(p) to Zpk, p odd or p=2 and n is even, which correspond to large affine spaces of bent functions. In particular we employ versions of the direct sum, the semi-direct sum and of a recent secondary bent function construction in Wang et. al., (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory69, 2023), to generate large affine spaces of bent functions. The significance of chromosome conformation capture in 3D genome architecture comprehension
Chromosomes are intricate macromolecules composed of chromatin that create three-dimensional structures within cells. The arrangement and interactions of chromosomes play a crucial role in shaping the genome's structure, function, and gene expression regulation. To fully grasp the architecture and adaptability of the genome, it is essential to understand the complex relationship between chromosomal structure and nucleotide sequences. Advances in our understanding of genome topology have been significantly driven by next-generation sequencing technologies designed for capturing chromatin conformation. The exploration of 3D genome organization has led to the development of high-throughput chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C) techniques. Hi-C is essential for revealing new aspects of genome architecture and for mapping genome-wide chromosomal interactions, both within individual chromosomes and between them. These interactions include chromosomal territories, topologically associating domains (TADs), and chromatin or gene loops. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the historical development and current state of 'C' technologies, in-depth insights into various Hi-C techniques, and the analysis of 3D genome structures. It concludes with a discussion on computational tools for analyzing high-resolution Hi-C data, the challenges in modeling 3D genome structures, and potential future advancements in the field.TÜBİTA
Q-learning-based battery action decision-making for electric vehicles with target SOC
Electric vehicles (EVs) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming increasingly widespread, making efficient battery management essential. In this work, Q-learning, a reinforcement learning method, is applied to help battery-powered devices and EVs determine optimal charging, discharging, and standby strategies. Through continuous learning, the battery explores different actions and improves its decision-making process over time. The results demonstrate significant improvements: the average state value increased from 90.83 to 98.70 (+8.66%), while the standard deviation decreased from 18.96 to 6.39 (66.27%), indicating a more stable and efficient decision-making process. This reduction in variability highlights the method's ability to enhance charging decisions, reducing fluctuations and improving overall battery performance. The proposed approach contributes to more effective battery management, potentially supporting advanced energy systems such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration
Modeling of pointing errors in terrestrial FSO links caused by building sway under wind loads
With their high data rate capacity, free space optical (FSO) communication systems can be used for last mile access, backhauling and fiber optic replacement. Terrestrial FSO links are typically installed on building roofs and are prone to building sways due to dynamic wind loads. In this paper, we provide a realistic modeling of the pointing errors in terrestrial FSO links relating them to the underlying physical phenomena. Towards this end, we use a civil engineering software for multi-story building analysis and design in conjunction with a wind simulator. We conduct extensive simulations to characterize the behaviour of various building sizes under wind loads. Statistical analysis of the building sway motion due to wind demonstrates that the motion is Gaussian in each axis and is in good agreement with current literature. However, it is also observed that the sway motion is dominated by the major axis (horizontal) while the other two are negligible in amplitude when the building is directly facing the wind. This leads to a zero mean single-sided Gaussian distribution. Through non-linear regression, we propose a closed-form expression for the standard deviation as a function of building height, width and wind speed. Afterwards, we present a closed-form expression of the error probability as a function of these environmental parameters and confirm its accuracy through numerical computations.Publisher versio
