Evaluating the accuracy of rietveld analysis for diffraction data from nanocrystalline powders

Search for long-lived particles produced in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at s√ = 13 TeV
A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in association with a Z boson is presented. The study is performed using data from proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 fb−1. The LLPs are assumed to decay to a pair of standard model quarks that are identified as displaced jets within the CMS tracker system. Triggers and selections based on Z boson decays to electron or muon pairs improve the sensitivity to light LLPs (down to 15 GeV). This search provides sensitivity to beyond the standard model scenarios which predict LLPs produced in association with a Z boson. In particular, the results are interpreted in the context of exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of scalar LLPs (H → SS). The Higgs boson decay branching fraction is constrained to values less than 6% for proper decay lengths of 10–100 mm and for LLP masses between 40 and 55 GeV. In the case of low-mass (≈ 15 GeV) scalar particles that subsequently decay to a pair of b quarks, the search is sensitive to branching fractions B(H → SS) < 20% for proper decay lengths of 10–50 mm. The use of associated production with a Z boson increases the sensitivity to low-mass LLPs of this analysis with respect to gluon fusion searches. Scaffolding preschool children's upcycling experiences through free vs. guided play activities
Waste management is becoming more important than ever before and teaching children about recycling and upcycling from early ages can be fun and rewarding. This study aims at engaging preschool children in upcycling activities through a playful toy kit, namely TOYI. To this end, we investigate free and guided play conditions for using the toy kit by looking at children's creations. We report preliminary qualitative results derived from parents' diaries and reflections on their children's use of the toy kit while engaging in two conditions. The overarching goal is to develop a digital platform to scaffold children's upcycling activities and the results of this study provide preliminary insights about how to support children's engagement in these activities through free and guided play sessions
Search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs in proton-proton collisions at s√ = 13 TeV collected with a dedicated high-rate data stream
A search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs is performed using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb−1. The data sets used in this search were collected with a dedicated dimuon trigger stream with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by retaining a reduced amount of information, in order to explore otherwise inaccessible phase space at low dimuon mass and nonzero displacement from the primary interaction vertex. No significant excess of events beyond the standard model expectation is found. Upper limits on branching fractions at 95% confidence level are set on a wide range of mass and lifetime hypotheses in beyond the standard model frameworks with the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of long-lived dark photons, or with a long-lived scalar resonance arising from a decay of a b hadron. The limits are the most stringent to date for substantial regions of the parameter space. Neural network based digital pre-distorter design for DCO-OFDM visible light communications
Direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is an appealing modulation scheme for reliable, high-speed optical transmissions and foreseen to be used in the upcoming IEEE 802.11bb visible light communication (VLC) standard. However, non-linear characteristics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) as VLC transmitters degrade the bit error rate (BER) performance of DCO-OFDM due to its high peak-to-average-power ratio. In this paper, we propose neural network based digital pre-distorter (DPD) to mitigate non-linear LED response for DCO-OFDM transmission. The proposed scheme extends the reliable transmission range by 1.75 m and 1.8 cm for non-compensated LED response and Memory Polynomial based DPD, respectively.TÜBİTA
High brightness illumination based on laser light diffusion with mie scattering
Limited luminous flux per wafer area of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high power solid state illumination causes some packaging real estate issues. This problem can be tackled with laser diodes (LDs). At high current densities, LDs offer higher efficiency, however with very low etendue and divergent angle. This significantly increases the complexity of color conversion for white light generation. Concentrated light can carbonize the color conversion unit and have high speckle contrast. These problems can be addressed by efficient diffusion of the laser beam and this paper is aimed to introduce the first laser diffusion system based on TiO2 Mie particles. Based on a series of ray tracing simulations, an idealized cost-effective system is modeled and results showed an almost lossless diffusion with a guiding system based on reflection resulting in an almost uniform irradiance level with only 17% power loss. Furthermore, offered design can reduce the challenges for the compact packaging of white LDs by eliminating the heat sink for color conversion coating and enabling a safe light intensity for utilizing quantum dots for color engineering.TÜBİTA
Yonga levha tesisi için uygulama: kalite tahminlemesi ve dijital dönüşüm için web tabanlı karar destek sistemi
As it is same for most of the production procedures, a certain quality level must be derived in the particle board production. In the particleboard production, a series of samples taken from the production line for the quality analysis of the products produced. These samples are put to the test for analysis and observe whether the quality metrics are satisfying the needs or not. Sampling can be done after a set of production is completed. Laboratory tests samples for at least three hours. If the results of the test are out of acceptable limits, then the facility changes the production parameters, waits for new production output to gain new samples, tests new samples again. While quality testing procedures are running, the products that do not satisfy quality limits, cannot be delivered to customers, which results in crucial capacity loss. In this study a decision support system is developed to measure real-time effects of changes of production parameters on quality metrics by using machine learning based prediction models with live production data collected from production line. Decision support system developed in this study enables to predict three different quality metrics while margin of error is realized around 5%, on the average.Tüm üretim proseslerinde olduğu gibi yonga levha üretiminde de üretilen ürünlerin belirli kalite değerlerini sağlaması gerekliliği bulunmaktadır. Yonga levha üretiminde, yine birçok üretim sisteminde olduğu gibi, üretilen ürünlere dair kalite değerleri üretim hattından alınan bir dizi numune için laboratuvar testleri sonucunda ölçümlenmekte; istenen değerlere ulaşılıp ulaşılamadığı ise testler sonuçlandıktan sonra anlaşılabilmektedir. Yonga levha prosesinde numunelere dair bu ölçümlerin sonuçları, numune alındıktan en erken üç saat sonra elde edilebilmektedir. Ölçümlerin sonuçlarında kalite değerleri kabul edilebilir limitlerin dışında çıktığında ise işletme üretime dair parametreleri değiştirmekte ve tekrar numune toplanması, laboratuvar testleri sürecine başlan- maktadır. Bu işlemler süresince üretilen ürünler ise kalite değerlerini sağlamadıklarından müşteri talebini karşılamakta kullanılamamakta; sonuç olarak da ciddi bir kapasite kaybı oluşmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, üretim hattından canlı olarak toplanan veriler kullanılarak makina öğrenmesine dayalı tahmin modelleri geliştirilmiş olup; üretim ile ilgili kalite değerlerini canlı olarak tahminleyerek üretim ile ilgili parametrelerdeki anlık değişimlerin kaliteye etkisinin vakit kaybetmeden ölçümlenmesine imkan veren bir karar destek sistemi geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen karar destek sistemi dokuz farklı kalite parametresini canlı olarak tahminlerken, tahminlerdeki hata payı ortalamada \%5 civarında gerçekleşmiştir
Inaction, silencing, and ignorance in disaster prevention: the case of Rıza Bey Apartment collapse in the earthquake in Turkey
Purpose: This article examines the inaction, silencing and ignorance in ex ante disasters whilst conducting a case study analysis of the Izmir/Samos earthquake, a 6.6 Mw (moment magnitude) earthquake that occurred at a depth of 14.9 km from the ground on 30 October 2020 at 2:51 PM. The 8-floor Riza Bey Apartment in Bayrakli/Izmir was demolished in the earthquake approximately 100 km from the epicenter. After the earthquake, several lawsuits started to conduct investigations on an apartment basis. Focusing on the causes of disasters in engaging with adoptive thinking in disasters, the current article posits the following research question: what are the ex ante socio-technical dynamics and causes of fatality in disasters? Design/methodology/approach: The methodological tools and advice related to disaster prevention in ex ante disasters originate from the actor network theory (ANT). Although ANT probes complex and dynamic multiplicities in disaster prevention management, this may be unsatisfactory for conceptualizing and operationalizing a disaster, as it is heavily reliant on discerning between humans and non-humans. Data were gathered (February 2021–February 2022) from 15 face-to-face interviews, 2 phone interviews, official documents, archival records, open-sourced public interviews, political speeches, newspaper articles, public reports, expert reports stories, videos, legal transcriptions and photographs. Additionally, data were gathered from the commission minutes officially published on the government website. Findings: This article revealed the confusion of authority between the local and central governments and the gap between institutions and citizens in understanding and implementing the disaster prevention laws and regulations. It found that the causes of disasters beyond any dichotomies, such as surface versus site and ground versus grounded, rely not only on the technical roles of disaster prevention but also the non-technical roles assigned to it. Research limitations/implications: Since the lawsuit has been in continuation, the process is still alive, and data gathering is limited to the litigation conditions of public servants in terms of sharing information. Since many of the flat owners died, it is difficult to access information on the apartment meetings to learn more about the resistance of flat owners against urban transformation and the possibility of ignoring or hiding the risk assessment report. Practical implications: Disaster prevention is such a complex process which generates complex adaptation mechanisms (physical, behavioral, biological, cognitive through training, learning and experiencing). Also, there is a need to understand the scale of adaptive behavior and its function to improve adoptive mechanisms. With a transdisciplinary focus, each discipline needs to embrace one another's calculation and calculative practices while they measure, observe, analyze and implement risk and uncertainties. Social implications: It is hard to prevent disasters without knowing the flow of root relations between actors and elements that are in movement with different directions, forms and motions. These unbalanced, uneven and endless root relationships between actors' movements create a constant state of tension of organizing, recording, auditing, quantifying, computing, mapping (geology, Earth information system and micro-zonation), budgeting, bookkeeping, measuring, performance, regulating, controlling, monitoring and auditing with all the numbers and data. Originality/value: There is a gap in the literature in terms of the interaction between accounts and institutions in ex ante disaster
Variable-sized bin packing problem with conflicts and item fragmentation
In this paper, we study the Variable-Sized Bin Packing Problem with Conflicts and Item Fragmentation (VSBPPC-IF) that has applications such as (i) the delivery planning of incompatible items using a fleet of heterogenous vehicles where split delivery is allowed, and (ii) load balancing and memory allocation in parallel processing. In VSBPPC-IF, a set of items has to be packed into the bins with different capacities and costs. Items can be fragmented, and each fragment can be packed into a separate bin. However, the fragments of conflicting items cannot be packed into the same bin. The goal in VSBPPC-IF is to find a packing of the items into the bins with minimum total cost. We propose a lower bounding mechanism for the problem and compare it against the trivial continuous lower bound. We develop a novel heuristic algorithm based on the idea of generating subsets of compatible items and determining the types of the bins used by solving a mathematical model. We compare the performance of the proposed solution approach both against a lower bound and a set of benchmark algorithms from the literature. The proposed heuristic not only outperforms the benchmark algorithms but also provides solutions with quite low (0.25% on average) optimality gaps
Introducing StarDust: A UD-based Dependency Annotation Tool
This paper aims to introduce StarDust, a new, open-source annotation tool designed for NLP studies. StarDust is designed specifically to be intuitive and simple for the annotators while also supporting the annotation of multiple languages with different morphological typologies, e.g. Turkish and English. This demonstration will mainly focus on our UD-based annotation tool for dependency syntax. Linked to a morphological analyzer, the tool can detect certain annotator mistakes and limit undesired dependency relations as well as offering annotators a quick and effective annotation process thanks to its new simple interface.
