Coordinated beamforming design for multi-user multi-cell MIMO VLC networks

    No full text
Inter-cell interference (ICI) and inter-user interference (IUI) constitute a major issue towards achieving the optimum spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) performance in multi-cell visible light communication (VLC) networks. Hence, advanced multiple access techniques need to be leveraged in order to improve the provided service to the users of such interfering networks. To this end, the present contribution proposes the integration of coordinated beamforming (CB) with rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) in multi-cell VLC systems. Specifically, we consider the design of beamformers for the common and private streams in a coordinated manner between different attocells, which is shown to provide efficient mitigation of the incurred interference. Additionally, the formulated optimization problem aims to minimize the sum of the mean squared error across all attocells in order to jointly determine the optimum receive filters and coordinated transmit beamformers for RSMA streams. In this context, we illustrate through extensive computer simulations, which are carried out in a realistic setup that assumes noisy channel state information acquisition, the distinct flexibility and robustness of CB-based RSMA in mitigating the incurred interference. Finally, the offered results demonstrate the superiority of CB-based RSMA in terms of achievable SE and EE performance in multi-cell VLC networks compared to the conventional CB-based space division multiple access counterpart.Publisher versio

Industrial applications require highly reliable, secure, low-power and low-delay communications. However, wireless communication links in the industrial environment suffer from various channel impairments which can compromise these requirements. This thesis presents a new reliable blacklisting protocol for ensuring the Internet of Things (IoT) network security and mitigating the effects of interference caused by multipath Rayleigh fading using a distributed approach. The proposed blacklisting protocol is simulated over a distributed IoT network setup where flat Rayleigh fading disrupts Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) communications. Distributed servers jointly decide in real-time whether to blacklist a device after individually performing anomaly detection and submitting their results to the hashgraph network. The IoT devices are classified by a device fingerprinting method using various machine learning (ML) algorithms that are trained with real-time packet capture data. The proposed blacklisting protocol is shown to increase the accuracy of blacklisting malignant devices from 42% to 82% as the number of servers increases from one to five for mixed attacks. It also achieves higher accuracies ranging between 47.2%-97.6% versus 47.4%-90.7% compared to the related work for Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. For this simulation with multiple servers, a novel solution for reducing the PER in a Rayleigh fading environment by searching optimal distributed server locations with a hybrid approach is also provided. The proposed protocol and the server location optimization algorithm are particularly suitable for the Industrial IoT (IIoT) in mitigating the effects of harsh communication environments in manufacturing facilities.

    No full text
This paper is discussed an experimental study carried out in the undergraduate Contextual Design Studio (CDS). The studio comprises four stages: Site Analysis Phase, Conceptual Design Studies, Design Development Phase, and Final Presentation. The site analysis stage lasts for about four weeks,10 hours a week in the studio. Particular importance is given to this part of the project so that students have a chance to gain different perspectives on multiple meanings of context and, more specifically, the historical, social and physical context of the the neighborhood. Besides conventional mapping and representation techniques and tools, some new design tools have been introduced in the studio, one of which was this experimental study in question. The study aims at the integration of the Parametric Mapping techniques, at a basic level, into the site analysis process in the contextual design studio to provide an entry point to thinking through the tool used for the students. In this term, the method of abstracting site features through Parametric Mapping was used in the site analysis process and the effect of this form-oriented data on the concepts of the projects was interpreted. NudiBranch, an add-on to the Grasshopper program, was used in the Parametric Mapping workshop. Students' works were discussed briefly with the help of some representative instances

    No full text
In this research, with the use of cold-formed steel (CFS) sections in-filled with rubberized concrete (RuC), a new low-carbon construction system is developed and assessed for its structural resilience and environmental impact compared to the current conventional earthquake-proof construction. First, connection level moment-rotation responses of the new form of CFS-RuC framed structure are validated against the results obtained from detailed finite element analyses. Next, nonlinear pushover analyses are undertaken on the CFS-RuC framed system in conjunction with conventional hot-rolled steel and reinforced-concrete (RC) frames for a case study selected in Istanbul. Lastly, economic and environmental impact analyses are conducted on the frame systems. The results show that the new CFS-RuC composite system offers both structural and environmental advantages compared to conventional systems. In terms of seismic performance of multi-storey buildings, it is shown that the ductility capacity of the CFS-RuC system can be improved by increasing the number of stories.Royal Academy of Engineerin

A variable neighborhood search based matheuristic for a waste cooking oil collection network design problem

    No full text
Households produce large amounts of waste cooking oil (WCO), which should be disposed properly to avoid its negative impacts on the environment. Using WCO as raw material in biodiesel production is an effective disposal method. In this study, we focus on designing an efficient WCO collection network, in which households deposit their WCO into the bins to be placed at several collection centers (CCs), which are then regularly collected by capacitated vehicles. We study the problem of determining (i) the number and location of the CCs, (ii) the assignment of households to the CCs, respecting a certain coverage distance threshold, (iii) the number of bins to place at each CC, and (iv) the vehicle routes navigating between the biodiesel facility and CCs to minimize the sum of fixed cost of opening CCs and placing bins at each CC and routing cost. To solve the proposed location-routing problem, we develop a novel matheuristic based on Variable Neighborhood Search, which incorporates an integer programming model to determine the bin allocation and assignment decisions. We evaluate the solution performance of different variants of the proposed algorithm by performing an extensive computational study on a set of hypothetical and case instances. The results show that the proposed matheuristic provides superior solutions with respect to benchmark algorithms.DIP program for German–Israeli Cooperation ; Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for Molecular Design ; Minerva Foundation ; Israel Science Foundatio

Making property of a marsh: environment, property, and politics in nineteenth-century Ottoman Ioannina

    No full text
This article discusses the contested character of property rights with respect to reclaimed land from marshes in the Ottoman Empire through the reclamation project for Lake Lapsista in Ottoman Ioannina starting from 1886. By the end of the nineteenth century, many marshes, lakes, and rivers in the Ottoman territories were planned to be cleaned and reclaimed for various purposes. However, as a result of reclamation projects, the possession of reclaimed land, and the way such lands were defined, became a vexed issue in which various actors became involved and struggled over controlling them. Focusing on struggles and negotiations the reclamation project created, the article aims to uncover how the ownership of reclaimed marshy regions were defined at the local level. Drawing on archival materials on the land dispute over the reclaimed Lake Lapsista from 1886 to 1909, the article shows that the struggle over control of the reclaimed land manifested itself in the attempts of both central and local actors to circumvent legal boundaries or manipulate legal regulation and codes at the local level, challenging approaches that only focus on legal texts and codes. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Increasing environmental pollution with the increase of vehicles that have internal combustion engines has led people to alternative methods due to the transportation sector's share in environmental pollution. Last decade, Researches have been increasıng sharply in this field to improve E-Mobility usage. On the other hand, automobile manufacturers who are producing internal combustion engines have announced that they will stop their R&D studies as of 2025. It is predicted that 300-350 million electric vehicles will be in traffic in the world by 2040. It is estimated that the energy demand created by this number of electric vehicles can be met with 350 million electric vehicle charging stations. In Turkey, it is estimated that 10 million electric vehicles will be on the roads in 2040. New charging stations will be established to meet the demand for electric vehicle charging stations that arise with the increase in electric vehicles. However, due to the lack of historical data, it is not entirely known how these stations will affect the electrification system in the region where they are installed in public areas. On the other hand, the number of stations does not increase rapidly due to the lack of a comparative example for investors who want to establish an electric vehicle charging station. In order to solve this problem, a simulation was created based on probabilistic and statistical analysis. As a result of the simulation, a realistic data set was created, and the effect of the new electric vehicle charging stations was discussed electrically and financially. There are two cases for using the simulation. One of the stations chosen for the simulation in the study is the shopping mall's car park, and another is a rest area on the Istanbul-Izmir highway.Dünyada fosil yakıtla çalışan motorlu araçların artışıyla birlikte yükselen çevre kirliliği, insanları alternatif yöntemlere sevk etmiştir. Ulaşım sektörünün çevre kirliliğindeki payı dolayısıyla elektrikli araçların kullanılması iyi bir yöntem olarak görülmektedir. Son on yılda elektrikli araç sayısının yükselişi bu yöndeki çalışmaları hızlandırmıştır.

Identification of hadronic tau lepton decays using a deep neural network

    No full text
A new algorithm is presented to discriminate reconstructed hadronic decays of tau leptons (τ h) that originate from genuine tau leptons in the CMS detector against τ h candidates that originate from quark or gluon jets, electrons, or muons. The algorithm inputs information from all reconstructed particles in the vicinity of a τ h candidate and employs a deep neural network with convolutional layers to efficiently process the inputs. This algorithm leads to a significantly improved performance compared with the previously used one. For example, the efficiency for a genuine τ h to pass the discriminator against jets increases by 10-30% for a given efficiency for quark and gluon jets. Furthermore, a more efficient τ h reconstruction is introduced that incorporates additional hadronic decay modes. The superior performance of the new algorithm to discriminate against jets, electrons, and muons and the improved τ h reconstruction method are validated with LHC proton-proton collision data at s = 13 TeV.BMBWF and FWF (Austria) ; FNRS and FWO (Belgium) ; CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, FAPERGS, and FAPESP (Brazil) ; MES and BNSF (Bulgaria) ; CERN; CAS, MoST, and NSFC (China) ; MINCIENCIAS (Colombia) ; MSES and CSF (Croatia) ; RIF (Cyprus) ; SENESCYT (Ecuador) ; MoER, ERC PUT and ERDF (Estonia) ; Academy of Finland, MEC, and HIP (Finland) ; CEA and CNRS/IN2P3 (France) ; BMBF, DFG, and HGF (Germany) ; GSRI (Greece) ; NKFIA (Hungary) ; DAE and DST (India) ; IPM (Iran) ; SFI (Ireland) ; INFN (Italy) ; MSIP and NRF (Republic of Korea) ; MES (Latvia) ; LAS (Lithuania) ; MOE and UM (Malaysia) ; BUAP, CINVESTAV, CONACYT, LNS, SEP, and UASLP-FAI (Mexico) ; MOS (Montenegro) ; MBIE (New Zealand) ; PAEC (Pakistan) ; MSHE and NSC (Poland) ; FCT (Portugal) ; JINR (Dubna) ; MON, RosAtom, RAS, RFBR, and NRC KI (Russia) ; MESTD (Serbia) ; MCIN/AEI and PCTI (Spain) ; MOSTR (Sri Lanka) ; Swiss Funding Agencies (Switzerland) ; MST (Taipei) ; ThEPCenter, IPST, STAR, and NSTDA (Thailand) ; TUBITAK and TAEK (Turkey) ; NASU (Ukraine) ; STFC (U.K.) ; DOE and NSF (U.S.A.) . Cultivating membership abroad: Analyzing German pre-integration courses for Turkish marriage migrants

    No full text
Addressing research on migration governance, this article examines German pre-integration courses offered to Turkish marriage migrants in Istanbul. The courses were implemented in response to growing concern about the perceived poor integration of Muslim migrants and a high number of forced marriages. I argue that these courses are a micro form of biopolitical governance. Specifically, they are an attempt to generate internalized ways of being and knowing that are desired by the state, which I call 'membership cultivation.' As such, the courses are not precisely aimed at restricting migration as in other pre-integration measures, nor are they mainly reinforcing symbolic boundaries and teaching liberalism as in post-migration German civic integration courses. Rather, the courses attempt to re-make migrants with regards to morality, culture and gender. Using participant observation and in-depth interviews, this research examines the disciplinary mechanisms targeting migrants' transformation to enhance our understanding of the biopolitics of pre-integration governance
