Insights for the next solar eclipse in Turkish grid with increased solar capacity
Solar panels are critical to future electricity generation, particularly as we transition from conventional to sustainable methods. While engineering applications can help address the disadvantages of solar panels in designing future power systems, managing grid operations during solar eclipses remains a challenge. During an eclipse, the obscuration of the sun reduces photovoltaic power generation. In this study, we analyze low-and high-resolution generation data from multiple panels to investigate production variance during a partial solar eclipse in Turkey in 2022. Our analysis provides insights into the impact of the next solar eclipse in 2027 and outlines necessary preparation steps. These findings can help address the challenge of managing grid operations during solar eclipses, which is critical for the successful integration of solar energy into the power grid
Will rivals enter or wait outside when faced with litigation risk? Patent litigation in complex product industries and international market entry
A spiral of patent infringement litigation among rival firms is a phenomenon often observed in complex product industries, where products comprise numerous separately patentable elements. Theoretically grounded in the awareness–motivation–capability framework of competitive dynamics, this article contributes to the literature on patent strategy and international market entry by looking at how, in a complex product industry, the intensity of patent litigation in a country affects a firm’s decision to enter that country. Our results show that the intensity of patent litigation in a country is a deterrent for potential entrants and has a negative effect on a firm’s likelihood of entering that country. We also show that a firm’s previous experience with patent litigation (awareness component), the share of a firm’s current patent applications in a target country (motivation component), and the size of a firm’s patent stock (capability component) moderate the relationship between a country’s patent litigation intensity and a firm’s likelihood of entering that country. We thus shed light on the joint effect of macro- and micro-level patent-related variables on a firm’s market entry decisions. We test our hypotheses with a comprehensive panel of patenting and entry strategies of 84 mobile phone vendors and their patent litigation battles in 45 countries, from 2003 to 2015
Analysis of the benefits, challenges and risks for the integrated use of BIM, RFID and WSN: A mixed method research
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify, classify and prioritize the benefits, challenges and risks for the integrated use of building information modeling (BIM), radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless sensor network (WSN) in the architecture, engineering, construction and operation (AECO) industry. Design/methodology/approach: This study relies on the mixed method approach which consists of systematic literature review, semistructured interviews and Delphi technique. A systematic literature review was performed and face-to-face semistructured interviews with seven subject matter experts (SMEs) were conducted for identification and classification purposes. Delphi method was applied in two structured rounds with eleven SMEs for prioritization purpose. These three research techniques were chosen to reach the most accurate data by combining different perspectives on the subject matter. Data gathered by these three methods was triangulated to increase the validity and reliability of this research. Findings: Thirteen benefits, ten challenges and four risks for the integrated use of BIM, RFID and WSN were identified. The results could aid the practitioners and researchers comprehend the pros and cons of this integration by representing SMEs’ valuable insights and perspectives about the current and future status, trends, limitations and requirements of the AECO industry. The identified risks and challenges show the requirements for future studies while the benefits demonstrate the capabilities and the potential contributions of this hybrid integration to the AECO industry. Originality/value: The integration of BIM, RFID and WSN is still not commonly implemented in the AECO industry. Some studies focused on this topic; however, none of them reveals the benefits, risks and challenges for integrating BIM, RFID and WSN in a holistic manner. This research makes a significant contribution to the AECO literature and industry by uncovering the benefits, challenges and risks for the integrated use of BIM, RFID and WSN that could increase industry applications

To achieve operational efficiency in logistics, we need to solve complex routing problems. Due to their complexity, these problems are often solved sequentially, i.e., using cluster-first route-second (CFRS) type frameworks. However, such two-phase frameworks generally suffer from sub-optimality arising from the first phase. To mitigate this sub-optimality, information about optimal tour lengths of potential clusters can be exploited first, thereby transforming this two-phase approach into a less myopic solution framework. In that aspect, a quick and highly accurate Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) tour length estimator can be utilized for searching high-quality clusters. Motivated by this, we propose novel and computationally efficient neural network-based optimal TSP tour length estimators. Our approach uses an entirely new feature set consisting of node level, instance level, and solution level features by combining the power of artificial neural networks and theoretical knowledge in the routing domain. This data and knowledge hybridization enables us to achieve predictions with less than 0.7 percent deviation (on average) from the optimality. Unlike previous studies, we design and use new instances mimicking real-life logistics networks and morphologies. These instance characteristics introduce a substantial computational cost, making our instances harder to solve. To cope with these pathologies, we devise a new and efficient way of finding lower bounds and partial solutions to TSP later to be used as solution-level predictors. We also conduct a computational study where we produce up to 100 times lower prediction error on out-of-distribution test instances. Finally, we develop an enumeration-like mechanism by incorporating proposed machine learning models and metaheuristics to solve massive-scale rout- ing problems efficiently. We significantly outperform the state-of-the-art solver in terms of solution time and quality, demonstrating the potential of our models and the proposed method.
Search for new physics in the τ lepton plus missing transverse momentum final state in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV
A search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) in the final state with a hadronically decaying tau lepton and a neutrino is presented. This analysis is based on data recorded by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1. The transverse mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of new physics. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross section of a W′ boson decaying into a tau lepton and a neutrino. Lower limits are set on the mass of the sequential SM-like heavy charged vector boson and the mass of a quantum black hole. Upper limits are placed on the couplings of a new boson to the SM fermions. Constraints are put on a nonuniversal gauge interaction model and an effective field theory model. For the first time, upper limits on the cross section of t-channel leptoquark (LQ) exchange are presented. These limits are translated into exclusion limits on the LQ mass and on its coupling in the t-channel. The sensitivity of this analysis extends into the parameter space of LQ models that attempt to explain the anomalies observed in B meson decays. The limits presented for the various interpretations are the most stringent to date. Additionally, a model-independent limit is provided.Individuals have received support from the Marie-Curie program and the European Research Council and Horizon 2020 Grant, contract Nos. 675440, 724704, 752730, 758316, 765710, 824093, 884104, and COST Action CA16108 (European Union); the Leventis Foundation; the Alfred P. Do Turkish mothers’ emotion regulation, psychological symptoms and caregiving helplessness vary based on attachment states of mind?
Mothers’ emotion regulation, mental health, and feeling of helplessness in caring for their child may vary based on maternal attachment classifications. Particularly, insecure attachment and unresolved state of mind can act as risk factors. Therefore, we examined how emotion regulation strategies of suppression and cognitive reappraisal, maternal symptoms of depression and anxiety, and caregiving helplessness differ based on maternal attachment classifications in the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Fifty mothers of children in the early childhood (AgeRange = 12-56 months) completed a pack of questionnaires, including Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Caregiving Helplessness Questionnaire. Then AAI interview protocol was administered and coded. Mothers did not vary in emotion regulation strategies, indicating emotion regulation balance. However, mothers with secure/autonomous AAIs reported less anxiety than mothers whose AAIs were judged to show unresolved loss or unresolved trauma. The mothers who provided AAIs judged to be secure/autonomous scored lower in depression and caregiving helplessness than mothers whose AAIs were judged to show unresolved loss or unresolved trauma. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies conducting AAI in Turkish mothers. We revealed the critical role of secure attachment for mental health and caregiving helplessness that can facilitate interventions targeting maternal attachment mind state
Profiles of parental burnout around the globe: Similarities and differences across 36 countries
Parental burnout (PB) is a pervasive phenomenon. Parenting is embedded in cultural values, and previous research has shown the role of individualism in PB. In this paper, we reanalyze previously collected data to identify profiles based on the four dimensions of PB, and explore whether these profiles vary across countries’ levels of collectivistic-individualistic (COL-IND) values. Our sample comprised 16,885 individuals from 36 countries (73% women; 27% men), and we used a latent profile approach to uncover PB profiles. The findings showed five profiles: Fulfilled, Not in PB, Low risk of PB, High risk of PB and Burned out. The profiles pointed to climbing levels of PB in the total sample and in each of the three country groups (High COL/Low IND, Medium COL-IND, Low COL/High IND). Exploratory analyses revealed that distinct dimensions of PB had the most prominent roles in the climbing pattern, depending on the countries’ levels of COL/IND. In particular, we found contrast to be a hallmark dimension and an indicator of severe burnout for individualistic countries. Contrary to our predictions, emotional distance and saturation did not allow a clear differentiation across collectivistic countries. Our findings support several research avenues regarding PB measurement and intervention.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi
An experimental study on the frost formation over a flat plate: Effect of frosting on heat transfer
Frost accumulation on cooled surfaces generates thermal barrier between the surface and air. Apart from the frost layer thickness, the thermal properties of the frost also affect its heat transfer characteristics. In this experimental study, the effect of the frosting on heat transfer is investigated at different cold surface temperatures and at different air velocities in a closed loop wind tunnel. A large number of experiments is performed by altering the parameters of free stream air velocity, relative humidity, and cold plate temperature. Frost layer impact on heat transfer rate is measured through a high precision thin film heat flux sensor for 60 min. Accordingly, heat flow was significantly obstructed due to frosting. The rate of diminishment in the heat flux was not found to be constant over time but shows a decreasing trend. Furthermore, an enhancement on the heat transfer was reported during the early stage of frost formation under certain environmental conditions, majorly due to the increase in effective heat transfer area induced by ice crystals and corresponding increase in latent heat generation. The densification of the frost layer and its effect on the total thermal resistance was discussed. Based on the convective heat and mass transfer balance over the frost layer, frost surface temperature was predicted. Lastly, a correlation for estimating the heat transfer decrease during frosting is proposed via non dimensional numbers.TÜBİTA
Search for pair production of vector-like quarks in leptonic final states in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV
A search is presented for vector-like T and B quark-antiquark pairs produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. Data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016-2018, with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1). Events are separated into single-lepton, same-sign charge dilepton, and multilepton channels. In the analysis of the single-lepton channel a multilayer neural network and jet identification techniques are employed to select signal events, while the same-sign dilepton and multilepton channels rely on the high-energy signature of the signal to distinguish it from standard model backgrounds. The data are consistent with standard model background predictions, and the production of vector-like quark pairs is excluded at 95% confidence level for T quark masses up to 1.54TeV and B quark masses up to 1.56TeV, depending on the branching fractions assumed, with maximal sensitivity to decay modes that include multiple top quarks. The limits obtained in this search are the strongest limits to date for T (T) over bar production, excluding masses below 1.48TeV for all decays to third generation quarks, and are the strongest limits to date for B (B) over bar production with B quark decays to tW.BMBWF and FWF (Austria); FNRS and FWO (Belgium); CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, FAPERGS, and FAPESP (Brazil); MES and BNSF (Bulgaria); CERN; CAS, MoST, and NSFC (China); MINCIENCIAS (Colombia); MSES and CSF (Croatia); RIF (Cyprus); SENESCYT (Ecuador); MoER, ERC PUT and ERDF (Estonia); Academy of Finland, MEC, and HIP (Finland); CEA and CNRS/IN2P3 (France); BMBF, DFG, and HGF (Germany); GSRI (Greece); NKFIH (Hungary); DAE and DST (India); IPM (Iran); SFI (Ireland); INFN (Italy); MSIP and NRF (Republic of Korea); MES (Latvia); LAS (Lithuania); MOE and UM (Malaysia); BUAP, CINVESTAV, CONACYT, LNS, SEP, and UASLP-FAI (Mexico); MOS (Montenegro); MBIE (New Zealand); PAEC (Pakistan); MES and NSC (Poland); FCT (Portugal); MESTD (Serbia); MCIN/AEI and PCTI (Spain); MOSTR (Sri Lanka); Swiss Funding Agencies (Switzerland); MST (Taipei); MHESI and NSTDA (Thailand); TUBITAK and TENMAK (Turkey); NASU (Ukraine); STFC (United Kingdom); DOE and NSF (USA).

Addressing the strength-ductility trade-off in a thermomechanical-processed high entropy alloy
High entropy alloys (HEAs) have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional mechanical behavior. However, the influence of secondary phases and dislocation substructures has yet to be thoroughly investigated. This study focuses on the incorporation of the decomposed η-phase within a face-centered cubic (FCC) microstructure at different recrystallization levels, aiming to achieve adequate ductility while maintaining strength at gigapascal levels. Various characterization techniques were employed to analyze the microstructure of both homogenized and annealed+aged conditions. Implementing a sub-micron grain size distribution and introducing a favorable dislocation substructure significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and ductility, reaching up to 1291 MPa, 1450 MPa, and 17.5%, respectively. The results highlight the influential role of grain size in facilitating the generation of geometrically necessary dislocations during plastic deformation.BAGEP Award of the Science Academy, Turkiy
