    From grassroots to international markets: A qualitative study of marginalized entrepreneurs in India

    Much of the growing literature on international entrepreneurship focuses on how positive circumstances, such as having prior international experience, business networks, or formal institutions lead to international entrepreneurial action and overlooks the role more challenging circumstances might play. In this study, we extend and refine challenge-based entrepreneurship theory to explore what influences international entrepreneurial action undertaken by marginalized entrepreneurs in an emerging economy. Despite widening economic and social disparities in emerging economies, little is known about entrepreneurs who have traditionally been “left behind.” Our findings suggest that these marginalized entrepreneurs have not only a set of liabilities but also advantages, including creative problem solving and perseverance, as well as local knowledge and networks. To spur the first-person international opportunity belief associated with international entrepreneurial action, an intermediary with resources and networks is needed to offset the liabilities. These intermediaries act as gatekeepers, helping some marginalized entrepreneurs but holding back others.Publisher versio

    Search for a heavy composite Majorana neutrino in events with dilepton signatures from proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    Results are presented of a search for a heavy Majorana neutrino [Formula presented] decaying into two same-flavor leptons ℓ (electrons or muons) and a quark-pair jet. A model is considered in which the [Formula presented] is an excited neutrino in a compositeness scenario. The analysis is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. The data are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. For the process in which the [Formula presented] is produced in association with a lepton, followed by the decay of the [Formula presented] to a same-flavor lepton and a quark pair, an upper limit at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction is obtained as a function of the [Formula presented] mass [Formula presented] and the compositeness scale Λ. For this model the data exclude the existence of [Formula presented] ([Formula presented]) for [Formula presented] below 6.0 (6.1) TeV, at the limit where [Formula presented] is equal to Λ. For [Formula presented], values of Λ less than 20 (23) TeV are excluded.     Towards test automation for certification tests in the banking domain

    Software systems in the banking domain are business-critical applications that provide financial services. These systems are subject to rigorous certification tests, which are performed manually, and take weeks to complete. In this paper, we suggest that automation of the certificate tests are possible and it will save a considerable amount of time. A certification testing operation which can take a few weeks can be reduced to a few seconds. Firstly, we review the existing test activities to identify the ones that can be automated and introduce a prototype tool for automating some of the tests used for certification. We focus on rules that are verified by analyzing the banking infrastructure. Our tool takes the network topology of the banking infrastructure as input and verifies a subset of these rules. The tool can be extended with additional rules in order to reduce the effort for certification tests. In addition to this tool, we introduce softwaredefined network-based tests to automatically verify compliance with the rules by checking the firewall constraints and host connections. In particular, we focus on a security certification standard named Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. This certification aims to reduce the risk of data breaches in cardholder data by ensuring industry standard practices for payment card transactions. Our tool offers effort reduction in auditing through automation. It supports continuous auditing and network security enhancement processes.TÜBİTA

    Vicarious abusive supervision among restaurant frontline employees: the role of employee industry tenure

    Purpose: Vicarious abusive supervision (VAS) has recently garnered the attention of hospitality researchers. VAS is prevalent in hospitality work settings characterized by long production chains and open operating environments. Based on the conservation of resources (CORs) theory, this study aims to examine how VAS influences hospitality employees’ work behaviours (i.e. supervisor-directed deviance, silence and helping behaviour) via affective rumination, with the moderating role of industry tenure as an individual contingency on the relationship between VAS and affective rumination. Design/methodology/approach: The data were gathered from 233 restaurant frontline employees and their supervisors in Turkey. The authors tested the proposed model using partial least squares method through SmartPLS 3. Findings: The results reveal that VAS triggers affective rumination, which, in turn, is positively related to supervisor-directed deviance and silence, and negatively related to helping behaviour. Moreover, industry tenure, as a buffer resource, significantly moderates the relationship between VAS and affective rumination. Practical implications: To reduce the occurrence of VAS and mitigate its negative effects, managers should establish a work environment that embraces understanding and respect, pay attention to how they communicate with employees, implement appropriate interventions when VAS occurs and conduct stress management training and improve employees’ emotion regulation skills in ways that correspond to the employees’ industry experience. Originality/value: This study advances research on VAS by offering insight into how VAS impacts employees’ work behaviours via the underlying mechanism of affective rumination through a COR lens. The findings also shed light on the salient buffering effect of industry tenure as an individual contingency

    A convergent parallel mixed-methods study of screen time and social behaviors in early childhood

    Using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, the present study examined children’s screen time and social behaviors through parents’ perceptions. The participants were 113 children and their parents for the quantitative strand and 42 randomly selected parents for the qualitative strand of the study. Parents reported on children’s social behaviors and screen time in the quantitative strand, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents in the qualitative strand of the study. Quantitative data were analyzed using cluster analyses, and qualitative data were analyzed using an open-coding system; following that, the quantitative and qualitative results were collaboratively discussed. Using cluster analyses, children were categorized into two groups (positive and relatively social negative behaviors) that reflect their social behaviors during peer play context. Qualitative analyses identified parents’ perceptions of their children’s social behavior and screen time. Accordingly, qualitative results consistently supported the two groups categorized in the quantitative strand. In addition, parents’ use of screen-related strategies was related to children’s positive social behaviors. Findings from the current study suggest that considering children’s engagement with screen time may contribute to a greater understanding of children’s social behaviors

    In recent years, the usage of open-source computational fluid dynamics tools is on a rise both in industry and academia. SU2 is one of these open-source tools. Unlike other open-source alternatives, SU2 is equipped with boundary condition types, solvers and methods that are especially developed for the analysis and design of turbomachinery. The aim of this work is to explore and investigate the capabilities of SU2 in the prediction of performance parameters of radial compressors. Two different single stage shrouded compressor geometries, one with a vaneless diffuser and the other with a vaned diffuser have been investigated with steady state CFD. The compressors were designed by MAN Energy Solutions Schweiz AG. Computational results with SU2 showed a satisfactory agreement with both the experimental data and reference CFD solutions obtained with Fidelity Flow, which is formerly known as Numeca Fine TURBO. Only at the relatively higher mass flow rates the difference between references and SU2 were higher compared to other operating points. After performance parameters were successfully calculated with SU2, the optimization tools that come with SU2 were also used. A 2D adjoint optimization study on the vane of the vaned diffuser was carried out. The study was carried out at a single operating point that is close to choke conditions. The loss generated by the large separated flow region at the suction side of the diffuser vane was reduced by 0.55 % in the optimized geometry using minimal modifications on the existing vane geometry to keep the performance of the compressor intact at other operating points. However, the resulting modification increased the total pressure loss by 0.86 % at one of the design operating points. This performance penalty could be due to the discontinuity in the vane geometry generated by the optimizer. Overall, the study shows that SU2 has the basic numerical schemes and models that are required for the analysis of radial turbomachinery flows and geometry optimization.Publisher versio

    A study on the adoption of virtual reality in industrial design education

    Virtual reality (VR) technology has been commercially and economically accessible to industrial designers for the past seven years, following the introduction of VR glasses and headsets, e.g., the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, in 2016. However, despite the growing popularity of VR implementations in education, it remains unclear to what extent industrial design (ID) students and instructors will adopt this technology. Hence, this article discusses the limited adoption of VR technology in ID education based on the analysis of qualitative data obtained from ID students and instructors, specifically their perspectives on integrating VR into the education process. The dataset comprises written and verbal expressions obtained through an online form and a group discussion session. The findings obtained from the analysis conducted through the content analysis approach suggest that both ID students and instructors harbor concerns regarding the incorporation of VR technology in ID education. These reservations primarily revolve around the potential adverse impacts of VR usage on students' skill development in terms of manual dexterity and material knowledge, as well as the effectiveness of its implementation within the context of ID education.Turkish Council of Higher Educatio

    Impact of social media brand blunders on brand trust and brand liking

    More companies are engaging with consumers in real-time on digital platforms, which may lead to accidental or unintentional sharing of messages. Accordingly, how to manage online brand crises has become an increasingly important issue for marketing managers. The present research explores how online brand blunders influence consumers’ trust and liking toward the blunderer brand, and the role of brand commitment in this relationship. Three studies show that consumers evaluate online brand blunders differently than they do product performance problems. Specifically, upon receiving negative brand blunder information, high (vs. low)-commitment consumers’ brand trust and brand liking decrease to a higher extent due to finding the blunder less humorous and more offensive. On the contrary, upon receiving negative product performance information, low (vs. high)-commitment consumers’ brand trust and brand liking decrease to a higher extent, which supports previous literature. Our findings suggest that managers should prioritize high and low-commitment consumers differently and tailor blunder communication in handling online brand crises

    A solenoid injector based drop-on-demand system for generating large droplets

    This paper proposes a drop-on-demand (DOD) system that can produce single droplets of highly repeatable size in the order of 2 mm. This system utilizes an on-the-shelf solenoid injector used in automotive applications. The design methodology is explained along with the necessary measurements and numerical simulations of droplet generation. The invention consists of a solenoid injector that produces monodisperse single or in-series droplets with the help of a developed pulse width modulated signal generator. Mass per injection is measured over a range of supply pressures and injection durations to find the operation window to generate 2 mm droplets. Later, various nozzle geometries are designed and tested by flow simulations. The contracting nozzle is found suitable for generating single droplets, so the design is implemented at the tip of the solenoid injector. The effects of different opening times, pressures, and nozzle’s orifice diameters were tested to observe the operating window of the newly designed DOD system and the repeatability of generated droplets by utilizing a coherent circular Hough transform image processing algorithm to measure droplet sizes. The standard deviation of measured diameters is less than 5% of the mean droplet diameter, which is in the range of 1.68-2.07 mm. Next, the voltage and current signals are measured per injection, and exact instants for the initiation and ending for both opening and closing are determined to construct transient mass flow rate functions for flow simulations in which the dependence of droplet formation on the speed of closing is revealed. The numerical and experimental results indicate the repeatability and consistency of the invention.TÜBİTA

    A Monte Carlo random walk-based methodology for calculation of sensitivity coefficients in inverse radiant boundary design problem

    This study presents a methodology for the solution of inverse boundary design problems involving transient heat conduction in solid objects imposed by radiant boundary condition. The inverse solution aims to find the required time-varying radiant wall temperature that provides the desired temperature histories at several selected design points inside the solid objects. Gradient-based optimization approach is employed, and a novel methodology is developed for the calculation of the sensitivity coefficients. The sensitivity coefficients are compared with the reference solution obtained from finite difference approximation. First, the inverse boundary design methodology was tested on two scenarios with known radiant wall temperature profiles. Using the true solutions of the problems, the validity of the developed methodology was verified. Next, the methodology was tested on a case where a constant cooling rate at a single design point was set as objective function. Results show that the methodology can successfully determine the required radiant wall temperature profile that fulfills the desired cooling rate.Center of Energy, Environment and Economy ; Özyeğin Universit
