    A lure or a turn-off: social media reactions to business model innovation announcements

    How do people react to business model innovation (BMI) announcements on social media? Is the analysis of social media reactions to BMI announcements a fruitful method for assessing the potential and pitfalls of BMIs? This research provides a novel perspective by answering these questions using a multi-case study approach. Our results show that social media reactions to BMI announcements can provide first indications of the success or failure of a BMI as well as initial information on how to further adjust the BMI. However, our results also indicate that classical means of assessing the success of innovations (i.e., through assessing the valence of user reactions) are not effective in the context of BMIs.University of Missour

    The weight of the cinematic landscape in Wim Wenders' road trilogy films

    The three films that create Wim Wenders' Road Trilogy (Alice in the Cities, Wrong Move, Kings of the Road) are examples of modern cinema. Even though landscapes occupy an important place in road movies, in Wenders' modern trilogy they are much more critical. Here, Wenders experiments with different styles of modern cinema, and the presentation of landscapes is very diverse. In one film, long landscape scenes interrupt the narrative; in another, they have an alienating effect. Landscapes with different formal applications help to reflect the inner journeys of the characters. In the Road Trilogy, the cinematic landscape is a complex production with multiple intertextual references and the tension between different gazes complicates its representation. Rather than being 'pure', the autonomous landscapes in Wenders' films are dialectic constructs helping the characters to change. Wenders emerges as a pragmatic director experimenting with different formal practices in his early period

    How authentic leadership cultivates trust and desirable workplace behaviors in hotels: Commitment and leader-follower value congruence matters

    This study explores how hotel supervisors’ authentic leadership behavior relates to followers’ value congruence, trust, organizational commitment (OC), and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). Survey data were collected from 176 Turkish hotel employees at two time points. Through SmartPLS, it was revealed that followers’ trust in their supervisor mediated the relationship between authentic leadership and OC. Indirect effects were found for authentic leadership on OCBs, both through trust and OC. Value congruence moderated the relationship between authentic leadership and followers’ trust in their supervisor. Results confirmed theoretical expectations, except for the surprising effect of value congruence in relationship to authentic leadership and trust

    Implementation of software-defined adaptive DCO-OFDM for vehicular visible light communication

    With its high data rates and electromagnetic interference-free operation capability, visible light communication (VLC), has emerged as a potential candidate for 6G and beyond networks. In this work, we present the preliminary experimental results of our rate-adaptive OFDM vehicular VLC implemented on software-defined platform. The physical layer of the system builds upon direct current biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) and supports adaptive transmission with different modulation schemes/levels including BPSK, 4-QAM, 16-QAM and 64-QAM. For switching between different modulation schemes, a feedback link with on/off keying modulation is used to send channel state information (CSI) to the OFDM transmitter. Based on the CSI, the OFDM transmitter adapts its next transmission by selecting a modulation scheme/level which maximizes the spectral efficiency while satisfying a predefined error performance target of 3.8×10-3European Union’s Horizon 202

    Enhancing the performance of Piezoelectric Energy Harvester under electrostatic actuation using a robust metaheuristic algorithm

    This study proposes a novel shape optimization methodology based on evolutionary algorithms to maximize the harvesting energy from piezoelectric energy harvester stimulated by the β-emitted radioisotope. The parametric width function is used to model the piezoelectric layer non-prismatically. All the geometrical dimensions as well as parameters related to the parametric width function are optimized using the metaheuristic algorithms The piezoelectric layer partially covers the beam to obtain the optimal location of the piezoelectric layer. The pull-in instability causes the discharge in the system, and the piezoelectric layer converts the vibration of the released microcantilever into electricity. The nonlinear effects of electrostatic force and geometry are taken into account, and the differential equations governing the system are discretized utilizing the exact mode shapes of the system considering the geometrical effects of non-uniform microcantilever and the piezoelectric layer. The robust chaotic Harris Hawk optimization (RCHHO) algorithm is proposed for finding the optimal shape of the system. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with various metaheuristic algorithms in the literature. After optimizing the shape of the piezoelectric layer, the maximum voltage produced with the optimal model using the presented method was 8.105 times that of the classic model with rectangular piezoelectric layer used in previous works. Moreover, the maximum energy and average energy harvested in the optimal model were 61 and 7.22 times, respectively, of the non-optimal model

    Combining tensile test results with atomistic predictions of elastic modulus of graphene/polyamide-6,6 nanocomposites

    In this work, we combined tensile test results with atomistic simulations to investigate the effect of filler parameters including distribution, stacking, loading and lateral graphene size on elastic moduli of graphene/PA-6,6 nanocomposites. Stacked and randomly distributed atomistic models were adapted in Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to establish the limits of stiffness enhancement in graphene reinforced PA-6,6 nanocomposites with loading ratios changing from 0 to 1 wt%. Experimental results showed that incorporating of 0.3–0.4 wt% graphene loading improved the elastic modulus of the neat polymer by 41.7%−43.5%. While the test sample behaved close to the computational results of the stacked atomistic model at low graphene loadings up to 0.4 wt%, it overshot the predictions of the randomly distributed model at all considered loadings up to 1 wt%. Elastic moduli of graphene-based PA-6,6 nanocomposites increased linearly with graphene loading in the stacked model, however, no such relation was detected in the randomly distributed model. The lower stiffness enhancement provided by the randomly distributed model compared to the stacked model was revealed as the small lateral size of graphene plates in PA-6,6 matrix. As the graphene size increased, the elastic modulus of the graphene dramatically increased, directly improving the elastic modulus of the nanocomposite. The developed computational approach is highly useful to estimate the boundaries of stiffness enhancement provided by graphene dispersions in macroscale nanocomposite samples.High-Performance Computing Laboratory of Ozyegin University ; TÜBİTA

    Developing the person of the therapist when working with couples

    Whilst conducting couples therapy is a professional practice, couples’ therapists (CTs) play an active role in the therapeutic process not only professionally but also personally. Despite the increase in research into the person of the therapist, few studies have examined the person of the therapist issues specific to CTs. In this study, we aimed to explore the experiences of CTs regarding the interaction of their personal and professional beliefs and experiences when working with couples. A qualitative design was used, based on constructivist grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 CTs in romantic relationships and working with couples. Three main categories were co-constructed through qualitative analysis: accessing what was brought in through the self, engaging with what the couples bring, and embracing the personal and professional selves. Awareness of the person of the therapist and learning how to use themselves to relate, assess, and intervene with clients enable CTs to create a secure therapeutic presence. The findings have useful implications for clinicians, couples therapy training program frameworks, and couples therapy supervision

    Search for new heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, or ZH boson pairs in the all-jets final state in proton-proton collisions at s = √13 TeV

    A search for new heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, or ZH boson pairs in the all-jets final state is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector in 2016–2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The search is sensitive to resonances with masses between 1.3 and 6TeV, decaying to bosons that are highly Lorentz-boosted such that each of the bosons forms a single large-radius jet. Machine learning techniques are employed to identify such jets. No significant excess over the estimated standard model background is observed. A maximum local significance of 3.6 standard deviations, corresponding to a global significance of 2.3 standard deviations, is observed at masses of 2.1 and 2.9 TeV. In a heavy vector triplet model, spin-1 Z′ and W′ resonances with masses below 4.8TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level (CL). These limits are the most stringent to date. In a bulk graviton model, spin-2 gravitons and spin-0 radions with masses below 1.4 and 2.7TeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% CL.     Search for top squark pair production in a final state with at least one hadronically decaying tau lepton in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

    A search for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark, in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13TeV is presented in final states containing at least one hadronically decaying tau lepton and large missing transverse momentum. This final state is highly sensitive to scenarios of supersymmetry in which the decay of the top squark to tau leptons is enhanced. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1), which was recorded with the CMS detector during 2016-2018. No significant excess is observed with respect to the standard model predictions. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the masses of the top squark and the lightest neutralino are presented under the assumptions of simplified models. The results probe top squark masses up to 1150 GeV for a nearly massless neutralino.
