Soil liquefaction and effects on structures; case study in Adıyaman-Gölbaşı after the 06 Feb 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye
On 06 FEB 2023, two earthquakes occurred southeast of Türkiye; Kahramanmaraş-Pazarcık (Mw=7.8) and Kahramanmaraş-Elbistan (Mw=7.6). These earthquakes caused devastating effects in 11 cities in eastern Turkey and northern Syria. This study presents the post-earthquake discoveries in three liq-uefied areas during earthquakes and four buildings in these liquefied areas in the Gölbaşı District of Adıyaman City. First, an important role of post-earthquake piezocone penetration test (CPTu) in the characterization of subsur-face conditions and assessment of liquefaction hazard is presented. Then, the ef-fect of soil liquefaction on the performance of the buildings in these regions during the earthquake was investigated. These structures consist of 3- to 6-storys on raft foundations and exhibited various structural performances. Based on the interim findings from these areas, potential factors that cause moderate to severe damage to buildings were examined, and preliminary information on the relationship between soil properties, and the performance of buildings with shallow foundations in liquefied soil is presented
Measurements of the Higgs boson production cross section and couplings in the W boson pair decay channel in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV
Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV . The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as well as couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions. The data set collected by the CMS detector during 2016–2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1 . The signal strength modifier μ , defined as the ratio of the observed production rate in a given decay channel to the standard model expectation, is measured to be μ=0.95-0.09+0.10 . Akle Tayyibe [Tasty Dish]—Cooking up belonging in the Syrian refugee foodscape in Turkey
This article is a study of Syrian women’s food practices in Turkey. Researchers have shown that food matters for belonging, but we need more research examining how migrants use food in memory-work; how they cook to create a “happy home”; and how shared meals are tied to inclusion in communities. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork, this research examines five food practices of belonging that can inform migration researchers about how refugees relate to their heritage and collective memories. The article sheds light women’s agency within struggles over belonging and the role of food in the home-making processes of refugee families
Time series predictive models for opponent behavior modeling in bilateral negotiations
In agent-based negotiations, it is crucial to understand the opponent’s behavior and predict its bidding pattern to act strategically. Foreseeing the utility of the opponent’s coming offer provides valuable insight to the agent so that it can decide its next move wisely. Accordingly, this paper addresses predicting the opponent’s coming offers by employing two deep learning-based approaches: Long Short-Term Memory Networks and Transformers. The learning process has three different targets: estimating the agent’s utility of the opponent’s coming offer, estimating the agent’s utility of that without using opponent-related variables, and estimating the opponent’s utility of that by using opponent-related variables. This work reports the performances of these models that are evaluated in various negotiation scenarios. Our evaluation showed promising results regarding the prediction performance of the proposed methods
Search for nonresonant pair production of highly energetic higgs bosons decaying to bottom quarks
A search for nonresonant Higgs boson ( H ) pair production via gluon and vector boson ( V ) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138 fb - 1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted H pairs identified using a graph neural network. Optimizing distributed generation sizing and siting using particle swarm optimization: A comparative study
In recent years, distributed generation (DG) has become increasingly popular as a means of mitigating the impact of climate change and ensuring a reliable and resilient power supply. To optimize the use of DG, it is essential to determine the most effective DG sizing and siting for a given power system. This problem has been researched, and several heuristic algorithms have been proposed and tested. This paper focuses on applying particle swarm optimization (PSO) to this problem to minimize real power loss. Five different PSO variants in single and three DG unit scenarios using the IEEE 33 bus system are tested to reveal the efficiency of the variants and their potential for improving the solution's performance. By comparing the performance of the different PSO variants with the ones in the literature, we found that PSO outperformed other heuristic algorithms for this problem. Our findings highlight the importance of choosing the suitable optimization algorithm for DG sizing and siting to achieve the best possible outcomes for power systems operations
Learning mean-field games with discounted and average costs
We consider learning approximate Nash equilibria for discrete-time mean-field games with stochastic nonlinear state dynamics subject to both average and discounted costs. To this end, we introduce a mean-field equilibrium (MFE) operator, whose fixed point is a mean-field equilibrium, i.e., equilibrium in the infinite population limit. We first prove that this operator is a contraction, and propose a learning algorithm to compute an approximate mean-field equilibrium by approximating the MFE operator with a random one. Moreover, using the contraction property of the MFE operator, we establish the error analysis of the proposed learning algorithm. We then show that the learned mean-field equilibrium constitutes an approximate Nash equilibrium for finite-agent games.TÜBİTAKPublisher versio
The strategic logic of digital disinformation: Offence, defence and deterrence in information warfare
Why do countries engage in disinformation campaigns even though they know that they will likely be debunked later on? We explore a core puzzle in information warfare in which countries that pursue disinformation to confuse and demobilise their adversaries usually suffer from reputational penalties after they are debunked, yet they nonetheless continue to pursue such tactics. In order to explain this dilemma, we employ a formal model and walk through anarchy, pre-emption and cost miscalculation explanations of disinformation and demonstrate that countries may rationally engage in disinformation campaigns if they have a different calculus about reputational costs, if they believe their adversaries will not be able to debunk their claims successfully, and if those adversaries will not be able to disseminate their debunked claims well enough to incur reputational costs on the initiator. Ultimately, we suggest that deterrence in information warfare is attainable if the “defender” can signal its debunking and “naming-shaming” capacity prior to the disinformation campaign and if it can mobilise the support of the international audience against the attacker. We conclude by arguing that a country’s fact-checking ecosystem and its pre-existing perception within the mainstream international digital media environment are the strongest defences against disinformation
Prioritization and parallel execution of test cases for certification testing of embedded systems
Testing for certification of embedded systems is common in consumer electronics domain. Application vendors provide test suites that have to be repeatedly executed for each product. Multiple test stations can be used in parallel for test execution. Test execution tasks must be prioritized and scheduled such that the overall test execution time is minimized. We present heuristics and an integer linear programming model for this purpose. Many of the existing heuristics and models assume a sequential test execution. Others fall short either in scalability or in finding the optimal solution. We perform an industrial case study to evaluate and compare solution approaches. We measure effectiveness in terms of the rate of fault detection while taking parallel execution and varying test execution times into account. We use certification test suites of 3 Smart TV applications applied on 3 projects as real experimental objects. We compare our results with respect to those obtained with the state-of-the-practice and 3 other previously proposed approaches. Results show that the overall test execution time can be reduced by up to 16% even when only 3 test stations are available. Test effectiveness is also improved by up to 40.7% as a result of optimal scheduling of test cases.Erasmus+ Programme of the European Unio
