Probing dynamical symmetry breaking using quantum-entangled photons
We present an input/output analysis of photon-correlation experiments whereby a quantum mechanically entangled bi-photon state interacts with a material sample placed in one arm of a Hong-Ou-Mandel apparatus. We show that the output signal contains detailed information about subsequent entanglement with the microscopic quantum states in the sample. In particular, we apply the method to an ensemble of emitters interacting with a common photon mode within the open-system Dicke model. Our results indicate considerable dynamical information concerning spontaneous symmetry breaking can be revealed with such an experimental system
Restorative Justice: Psychological Needs of Offenders and Implications for Safety & Security
Crime creates psychosocial needs for victims, offenders, and communities where they occur—whether it is homogeneous or heterogeneous. Unfortunately, the criminal justice system does not recognize and take steps to meet these needs. This failure stems from a mischaracterization of the state or government as the crime victim. Our contention is that this problem also emerges from the theoretical groundswell that posits that offender must pay for his or her crime through incarceration. The result of this skewed perception of crime and victimhood has not deterred crime as evidenced by the high rate of recidivism. Certainly, crime-created psychological and social needs, also referred to in this analysis as psychosocial needs, do exist. The overarching question for this analysis is: Does the traditional criminal justice system meet these requirements? Contrarily, the restorative justice system is a method of justice administration that focuses on meeting the psychosocial needs of victims, offenders, and communities. The goal of restorative justice may be realized through victim-offender conference, family group conference, and peacemaking circles. Our findings revealed that these programs are effective because their success is supported by factors such as high rate of participation; the satisfaction of victims, the offenders and the communities where the crime occurred; as well as the programs’ popularity
Immune Cell Production of Interleukin 17 Induces Stem Cell Features of Pancreatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia Cells
Background & Aims: Little is known about how the immune system affects stem cell features of pancreatic cancer cells. Immune cells that produce interleukin 17A (IL17A) in the chronically inflamed pancreas (chronic pancreatitis) contribute to pancreatic interepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) initiation and progression. We investigated the effects that IL17A signaling exerts on pancreatic cancer progenitor cells and the clinical relevance of this phenomena. Methods: We performed studies with Mist1Cre;LSLKras;Rosa26mTmG (KCiMist;G) and Kras(G12D);Trp53(R172H);Pdx1-Cre (KPC) mice (which upon tamoxifen induction spontaneously develop PanINs) and control littermates. Some mice were injected with neutralizing antibodies against IL17A or control antibody. Pancreata were collected, PanIN epithelial cells were isolated by flow cytometry based on lineage tracing, and gene expression profiles were compared. We collected cells from pancreatic tumors of KPC mice, incubated them with IL17 or control media, measured expression of genes regulated by IL17 signaling, injected the cancer cells into immune competent mice, and measured tumor growth. IL17A was overexpressed in pancreata of KCiMist mice from an adenoviral vector. Pancreata were collected from all mice and analyzed by histology and immunohistochemistry. Levels of DCLK1 and other proteins were knocked down in KPC pancreatic cancer cells using small interfering or short hairpin RNAs; cells were analyzed by immunoblotting. We obtained 65 pancreatic tumor specimens from patients, analyzed protein levels by immunohistochemistry, and compared results with patient survival times. We also analyzed gene expression levels and patient outcome using The Cancer Genome Atlas database. Results: PanIN cells from KCiMist;G mice had a gene expression pattern associated with embryonic stem cells. Mice given injections of IL17-neutralizing antibodies, or with immune cells that did not secrete IL17, lost this expression pattern and had significantly decreased expression of DCLK1 and POU2F3, which regulate tuft cell development. KCiMist mice that overexpressed IL17 formed more PanINs, with more DCLK1-positive cells, than control mice. Pancreatic tumor cells from KPC mice and human Capan-2 cells exposed to IL17A had increased activation of NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling and increased expression of DCLK1 and ALDH1A1 (a marker of embryonic stem cells) compared with cells in control media. These cells also formed tumors faster that cells not exposed to IL17 when they were injected into immunocompetent mice. KPC cells with knockdown of DCLK1 expressed lower levels of ALDH1A1 after incubation with IL17 than cells without knockdown. Expression of the IL17 receptor C was higher in DCLK1-positive PanIN cells from mice compared with DCLK1-negative PanIN cells. In human pancreatic tumor tissues, high levels of DCLK1 associated with a shorter median survival time of patients (17.7 months, compared with 26.6 months of patients whose tumors had low levels of DCLK1). Tumor levels of POU2F3 and LAMC2 were also associated with patient survival time. Conclusions: In studies of mouse and human pancreatic tumors and precursors, we found that immune cell-derived IL17 regulated development of tuft cells and stem cell features of pancreatic cancer cells via increased expression of DCLK1, POU2F3, ALDH1A1, and IL17RC. Strategies to disrupt this pathway might be developed to prevent pancreatic tumor growth and progression
Matrix methods for Padé approximation: Numerical calculation of poles, zeros and residues
A representation of the Padé approximation of the Z-transform of a signal as a resolvent of a tridiagonal matrix Jn is given. Several formulas for the poles, zeros and residues of the Padé approximation in terms of the matrix Jn are proposed. Their numerical stability is tested and compared. Methods for computing forward and backward errors are presented
Kolaviron attenuated arsenic acid induced-cardiorenal dysfunction via regulation of ROS, C-reactive proteins (CRP), cardiac troponin I (CTnI) and BCL2
Arsenic acid is one of the abundant environmental pollutants present in soil, water and the air. Undoubtedly, it has found its way to the food chain in which humans and animals are the final targets thereby causing arrays of disease conditions including cardiovascular and renal dysfunction. Hence, the use of phytochemicals present in medicinal plants has gained global acceptance as chemotherapeutic agents that can prevent, ameliorate, reverse or treat diseases. From our study, arsenic acid intoxication led to significant increase in heart rate (HR), QRS, together with prolonged QT and QTc interval. However, Kolaviron (KV) at the dosage of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight reversed the aforementioned electrocardiographic (ECG) changes. KV pre-treatment also ameliorated cardiorenal dysfunction via significant reduction in cardiac and renal markers of oxidative stress such as malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide generation, myeloperoxidase activity and nitric oxide contents. Immunohistochemistry revealed expressions of renal C-reactive proteins (CRP) and expressions of anti-apoptotic protein BCL2 in KV treated rats. Furthermore, cardiac troponin I (CTnI) expressions were lower in KV treated rats. Taken together, KV mitigated arsenic-acid induced cardiovascular dysfunction via up-regulation of antioxidant defense system and down-regulation of inflammatory and apoptotic signaling pathways
The Impact of Using Geographic Information Systems Technology on Students\u27 Understanding of Epidemiology
To enhance/update our microbiology course, we employed a geographic information science and technology (GIST) infusion to improve students\u27 understanding of epidemiology and disease spread and to encourage students to earn a GIST certificate, making them more marketable in an increasingly competitive workplace. Following a 25-minute introductory GIST infusion lecture during a microbiology class session, a 1.5-hour GIST laboratory exercise was performed in which teams of students evaluated Centers for Disease Control (CDC) chlamydial disease incidence data. In addition to answering three quiz questions addressing the data, students created a map, using ArcGIS software, indicating which Texas counties experienced the highest rates of chlamydia in 2014. To determine the efficacy/value of our infusion, GIST survey data (pre- A nd post-infusion), GIST lab quiz scores, and answers to four GIST lecture exam questions were evaluated. In conclusion, our study was successful in improving understanding of what GIST is and how it could impact biological fields by improving attitudes about the likelihood of further GIST study leading to a certificate program, and by exposing biology undergraduates to GIST technologies and software, enabling student data mapping. Ultimately, our efforts could promote enhanced vocationalization of our biology program, thereby enhancing and broadening employment opportunities for our graduates
Regulation of aqueous humor dynamics by hydrogen sulfide: Potential role in glaucoma pharmacotherapy
Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a gaseous transmitter with well-known biological actions in a wide variety of tissues and organs. The potential involvement of this gas in physiological and pathological processes in the eye has led to several in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies to understand its pharmacological role in some mammalian species. Evidence from literature demonstrates that 4 enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of this gas (cystathionine β-synthase, CBS; cystathionine γ-lyase, CSE; 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase, 3MST; and d-amino acid oxidase) are present in the cornea, iris, ciliary body, lens, and retina. Studies of the pharmacological actions of H 2 S (using several compounds as fast- and slow-releasing gas donors) on anterior uveal tissues reveal an effect on sympathetic neurotransmission and the ability of the gas to relax precontracted iris and ocular vascular smooth muscles, responses that were blocked by inhibitors of CSE, CBS, and K ATP channels. In the retina, there is evidence that H 2 S can inhibit excitatory amino acid neurotransmission and can also protect this tissue from a wide variety of insults. Furthermore, exogenous application of H 2 S-releasing compounds was reported to increase aqueous humor outflow facility in an ex vivo model of the porcine ocular anterior segment and lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in both normotensive and glaucomatous rabbits. Taken together, the finding that H 2 S-releasing compounds can lower IOP and can serve a neuroprotective role in the retina suggests that H 2 S prodrugs could be used as tools or therapeutic agents in diseases such as glaucoma
Global Homelessness in a Post- Recession World
The Great Recession has resulted in various changes in homeless populations in municipalities throughout the world. From “unsheltered homeless” in NYC to rough sleepers in London and to sans-abris in Paris, or poblacion callejera in Mexico City, the economic crisis of 2008 impacted economies in ways that put severe pressures on housing, particularly at the lower-income-level brackets. After all, the Great Recession was generated by a housing bubble, which then constricted capital markets for housing. After the immediate crisis, economic stabilization was followed by stagflation or deflation. There were flat or decreasing wages in the middle- to low-income brackets and high unemployment. Many governments responded with austerity measures to decrease public spending. This research takes a global perspective on the impact of the recession on trends for unsheltered homelessness in twenty of the largest municipalities in OECD countries from 2005-201
Strategic spectrum occupancy for secondary users in cognitive radio networks with retrials
This article investigates joining strategies and admission control policy for secondary users (SUs) with retrial behavior in a cognitive radio (CR) system where a single primary user (PU) coexists with multiple SUs. Under a certain reward-cost structure, SUs opportunistically access the PU band when it is not occupied by the PU. If the band is available upon arrival, an SU decides with a probability either to use the band immediately or to balk the system. If the band is occupied, the SU must decide whether to enter the system as a retrial customer or to leave the system. Once the PU requests for service, the service of SU being served, if any, will be interrupted, and the interrupted SU leaves the band and retries for service after a random amount of time. In this article, we study the equilibrium behavior of non-cooperative SUs who want to maximize their benefit in a selfish, distributed manner with delay-sensitive utility function. The socially optimal strategies of SUs are also derived. To utilize the PU band more efficiently and rationally, an admission control policy is proposed to regulate SUs who enter the system in order to eliminate the gap between the individually and socially optimal strategies
Effect of delirium motoric subtypes on administrative documentation of delirium in the surgical intensive care unit
This study compares the proportions of surgical intensive care unit (ICU) patients with delirium detected using the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) who received administrative documentation for delirium using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes, stratified by delirium motoric subtypes. This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a surgical ICU from 06/2012 to 05/2013. Delirium was assessed twice daily and was defined as having ≥1 positive CAM-ICU rating. Delirious patients were categorized into hyperactive/mixed and hypoactive subtypes using corresponding Richmond Agitation Sedation Scales. Administrative documentation of delirium was defined as having ≥1 of 32 unique ICD-9-CM codes. Proportions were compared using Pearson’s Chi-square test. Of included patients, 40 % (423/1055) were diagnosed with delirium, and 17 % (183/1055) had an ICD-9-CM code for delirium. The sensitivity and specificity of ICD-9-CM codes for delirium were 36 and 95 %. ICD-9-CM codes for delirium were available for 42 % (95 % CI 35–48 %; 105/253) of patients with hyperactive/mixed delirium and 27 % (95 % CI 20–34 %; 46/170) of patients with hypoactive delirium (relative risk = 1.5; 95 % CI 1.2–2.0; p = 0.002). ICD-9-CM codes yielded a low sensitivity for identifying patients with CAM-ICU positive delirium and were more likely to identify hyperactive/mixed delirium compared with hypoactive delirium
