A Perception of International Graduate Students on the Academic Advising Support in HBCUs

International graduate students in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a particular population that needs special academic advising support. This study sought to identify international graduate students’ expectations of and satisfaction with the academic advising support at HBCUs in the Southern states of the United States. A quantitative research design was selected, and Smith and Allen’s Inventory of Academic Advising Function (Student Version) was employed as the instrument to measure students’ perceptions of the 12 academic advising functions during the Fall 2022 semester. Results indicated that students were overall satisfied with their academic advising support in HBCUs. However, they had higher expectations than their satisfaction, which implied further improvement in academic advising support. Although lots of advising literature advocated developmental advising, international graduate students attached the same importance to developmental advising and prescriptive advising. Their satisfaction ratings for developmental advising were slightly higher than prescriptive advising. Results also showed that international graduate students had strong desires and determination to graduate

Investigating the Impact of Covid-19 on Mobility Condition.

Having large number of vehicles operating in the freeways of Houston daily, the mobility concern is high as some of the freeways in Houston are among the most congested freeways in United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the less congested freeways led to over speeding resulting in various crashes and even fatality. This resulted in changing of drivers; and ultimately the mobility patterns were changed during the study years of 2019, 2020 and 2021. To better understand how this mobility pattern changed over the three years, this research used Machine Learning algorithms to examine the mobility of freeways in Houston during that time. For this purpose, a model was developed using python coding which considered operating speed and other independent variables to understand the change of the traffic mobility. Several methods were used in the study to check the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence modeling. To check how the mobility was impacted over the years, Violin Plots were also plotted to illustrate the change of operating speed from year 2019 to 2021. The results of this research demonstrated that there are eight factors that have significant effects on the vehicular mobility. Among them, annual average daily traffic is the most influencing in traffic mobility study whereas K-factor is the least effective among the selected variables. Relative countermeasures were recommended according to the influencing factors that were identified

The Predictability of Selected Demographic, Academic and Family Related Factors on the Persistence Rate Among First -Year College Students

This study examined the relationship between selected demographic, academic and family related factors on the persistence rate among college students attending an urban university in the southern region of the United States. Although there is no conclusive explanation for what affects persistence of first-year students nationally; increasing student persistence is viewed as one of the most important issues for most colleges and universities. American College Testing (2002) reports that persistence is greatly influenced by the type of institution; if the institution is more selective, its persistence rates are also higher. Archival data on the target institution from higher education\u27s data bank were collected by the investigator. A total of 300 freshmen college students were randomly selected to participate in the study. Participants were measured on three sets of independent variables. The first set measured demographic characteristics of freshman college students (gender and ethnicity). The second set measured the academic factors for freshman college students (high school GPA and SAT scores) and the third set measured family related factors pertaining to freshman college students (mother’s educational level and father’s educational level). The demographic factors of gender and ethnicity were significant predictors in determining those freshman college students who would return to the university the next semester. Academic factors of high school grade point average, SAT scores, family related factors such and mother and father’s educational level were all not significant predictors in determining those freshmen college student would return to the university

Teachers Perception of Leadership Styles, Institutional Factors and Principal Demographics Related to Teacher Attrition on Suburban Middle School Campuses

The shortage of teachers in the country is staggering (Shuls & Flores, 2020). According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics (2022), teacher shortages widen the equity gap in education; therefore, it is essential to assess and monitor teacher attrition. This study added to the body of knowledge relating to teacher attrition by exploring the predictive relationship between attrition and instructional factors, principal demographics, and leadership styles as perceived by teachers. The study focused on suburban middle school teachers and their perception of attrition which was the dependent variable. The three independent variable sets were: principal leadership styles (transactional, transformational, Laissez-faire, and authoritarian) and other leadership demographic factors, institutional factors (Title I versus Non-Title I campus) and classroom factors (class size, discipline, subject taught). This study will add to the body of knowledge and benefit principals, human resources (HR) staff, and teachers

Black Maternal Health Disparities in the United States

This paper serves to inform and explain the treatment of Black women within the healthcare system. Black women and their babies are dying at insane rates in the United States. Most of the deaths are preventable. The numbers are alarming and have caught the eyes of society and the government. This tragedy is serious and brings many questions. This paper and my research are created to answer most of those questions. The main question is why the maternal mortality and morbidity rates for Black women are higher than any other race. This question is my research question and the foundation of my research. My research found that the answer to that question is complex and starts when African women were forced into the United States and enslaved. Since this time, the treatment of Black women has never been fair or just. The focus of this paper is to explore the treatment of Black women throughout time and give practical solutions to the treatment of Black women within the healthcare system. I focused on finding the major factors contributing to the treatment of Black women now and reviewed Black women experiences throughout history. Evaluation of the research suggested that structural racism, gender inequality, environmental stressors, and health disparities are the main factors that impact Black women. I also reviewed literature that gave prevention and solutions to the disparities of Black women within the healthcare system

The Predictability Of Selected Demographic Factors On General, Extrinsic And Intrinsic Job Satisfaction Among Faculty And Staff Employed At An Urban University

The purpose of this empirical investigation is to examine the predictability of selected demographic factors on the job satisfaction among faculty and staff employed at an urban university. Specifically, this study examined the predictability of the demographic factors (gender, ethnicity, age, and years of experience) on the general, extrinsic, and intrinsic components of job satisfaction among faculty and staff when controlling for number of hours worked, relationship with co-workers, recognition and support on the job and institutional climate. Three hypotheses were formulated for this study. All hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance or better. A predictive correctional research design was utilized in this empirical study. The multiple regression procedure Ordinary Least Squared (OLS) regression was used to examine the relationship and predictability of more than one predictor variable to one criterion variable employing the principles of correlation and regression. Based on the findings, this study concluded that demographic variables of gender, ethnicity, age, and years of experience were not reliable predictors of general job satisfaction among faculty and staff. In addition, demographic variables of gender, ethnicity, age, and years of experience were found not to be reliable predictors of extrinsic job satisfaction among faculty and staff. Furthermore, in general, number of hours worked, and the relationship with demographic variables of gender, ethnicity, age, and years of experience were not good predictors of intrinsic job satisfaction among faculty and staff

A Comparison Of The Academic Performance Of Third-Fifth Grade Students In A Title I School Using Virtual Versus Face-To-Face Instruction

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) did not allow elementary aged students to receive the vaccination for COVID-19 (which will be referred to as the pandemic) until the Spring of 2021. This created two environments: the face-to-face learning environment and the virtual learning environment. Teachers were thrown into a situation in which they had to consider the risks to their own health before deciding on the best way to teach a particular lesson. Virtual learning was not considered by some to be as effective as face-to-face learning. The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to analyze the mean scores on state testing of third, fourth, and fifth-grade students that received virtual instruction and face-to-face instruction in Title 1 schools in Texas. For this study, the independent variables are virtual learning and face-to-face learning. The dependent variables are the mean scores on state testing for reading and math. The Kruskal-Wallis H Test compared the mean scores of students that learned in virtual environments and face-to-face environments to determine if there is a significant difference in math and reading. This study was grounded in two theories of learning; cognitive learning theory and connectivism learning theory. The goal was to make an empirical contribution to the body of knowledge concerning performance of state testing of students who learned in a virtual environment compared to students who learned in a face-to-face environment
