Honoring Dr. Nancy Shepherd: 
Championing Literacy and Community 
Engagement in Health Services and 
Consumer Sciences 
The College of Health Services and 
Consumer Sciences at Texas Southern 
University is proud to recognize Dr. Nancy 
Shepherd for her exceptional dedication to 
promoting literacy and community 
engagement. 
This past semester, Dr. Shepherd launched 
her beloved children’s book, The Adventures 
of Mighty the Mini Rolling Pin. The book 
quickly became a source of inspiration for 
young readers, with its captivating storyline 
designed to nurture creativity and a love for 
reading. The book launch was just the 
beginning of Dr. Shepherd’s efforts to 
support literacy. 
On November 13th, Dr. Shepherd organized 
the Let's Read Together event, a 
heartwarming initiative for campus children 
and their parents. This special event brought 
together students, faculty, and families to 
celebrate reading, as Dr. Shepherd and her 
students read stories, gave away copies of 
her book, and distributed surprise bags filled 
with educational goodies. 
Throughout November, in honor of Family 
Literacy Month, Dr. Shepherd took her 
passion for reading directly to local schools, 
where she visited classrooms to read and 
engage with students. Her outreach efforts 
are a testament to her unwavering belief in  
 
 
 
 
the power of reading to shape young minds 
and strengthen communities. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
In addition to her literary achievements, Dr. 
Shepherd continues to contribute to the field 
with her ongoing research and publications, 
further advancing knowledge in Health 
Services and Consumer Sciences. Her 
combined efforts in education, literacy, and 
community service exemplify the values of 
Texas Southern University, highlighting its 
role as a leader in fostering social 
responsibility and educational 
empowerment. 
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. 
Nancy Shepherd for her tireless dedication 
to enriching the lives of children and 
families. Her efforts ensure that TSU’s 
legacy in community service and education 
remains impactful and ever-growing.

Professor Walter Champion – A Leader 
in Sports and Entertainment Law 
Texas Southern University’s Thurgood 
Marshall School of Law proudly highlights 
Professor Walter Champion, a distinguished 
scholar and educator with nearly 40 years of 
experience in Sports and Entertainment Law. 
Joining the Law School in 1984, Professor 
Champion has authored 13 influential books, 
including Sports Law in a Nutshell, Baseball 
and the Law, and Sports Ethics for Sports 
Management Professionals. He also served 
as the George Foreman Professor of Sports 
and Entertainment Law. 
Professor Champion is a leading expert in his 
field, recently delivering the keynote lecture 
at the Texas State Bar's webinar on 
"Emerging Issues in Sports," where he 
discussed the NIL Revolution in collegiate 
athletics. His scholarship continues to evolve, 
with key upcoming publications such as the 
third edition of Gaming Law in a Nutshell 
(2025) and Risk Management in a Nutshell 
(2025). 
Known for his dynamic teaching style, 
Professor Champion has influenced countless 
students and legal professionals throughout 
his career. His contributions to both legal 
education and the broader legal community 
continue to shape the future of Sports and
