OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES AND EMPLOYEES TURNOVER INTENTION: A MODERATING EFFECT OF SAFETY CULTURE
Occupational health and safety aims at promotion and maintenance of physical, mental and social health of employees.Unfortunately the conditions in a developing country like Pakistan are worse regarding safety at work. This study examines the effect of Occupational Injuries and Turnover Intention among workers in Pakistan with moderating role of Safety Culture. The study was done on a sample of111 workers belonging to safety sensitive areas. Three hypotheses were developed, two of them were accepted and one was rejected. Results showed that occupational injuries has an effect on turnover intention among employees and the safety culture does not lessen the extent of turnover due to non-prevalence of safety environment in Pakistan. It was concluded that due to differences in cultural context, concept of safety culture does not prevail in Pakistan, and evils like poverty and unemployment reduce chances of turnover intention
SELF-ESTEEM IN MALE AND FEMALE PATIENTS OF FACIAL BURN INJURIES IN KARACHI
Facial burn injury becomes a mental, physical and social stigma of our society which affects the victim’s self-esteem. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess self-esteem in female victims of facial burns. Around 100 male and female burn patients were selected from two burn unit hospitals of Karachi. The survey employed the State Self-Esteem Scale (SSES) (Heatherton & Polivy, 1991) At a significance of p=0.0001, the data shows that there was a difference between the means of self esteem of male and female burn patients of Karachi. Males had statistically significant slightly higher score of self esteem 79±6 than female burn patients 70±7.8. Regression analysis on age and self-esteem revealed that age did not influence self-esteem of respondents. The factors which contribute to self esteem are gender, occupational status, number of dependant members, total no. of family members and marital status. Health care professionals, doctors and nurses working with such patients need to encourage them in coping with their lifestyle and normal settings. Social and moral support is an important factor to generate positivity in improving self-esteem of burn patients, family, friends; relatives need to be adequately guided in reducing the level of anxiety and depression related to low-self esteem
THE IMPACT OF CRIMES ON FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT OF PAKISTAN: AN ARDL APPROACH.
It is often argued that foreign investors are reluctant to invest in a country having unstable political, social and economic conditions. Pakistan has been facing such instability, resulting deleterious repercussions for the economy. An upsurge in the frequency and scale of criminal activities in Pakistan may have ousted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Keeping in view this fact, the present study is an effort to have an empirical insight. Time series data has been used from 1974 to 2011; Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model has been used for the estimation purposes. The results reveal negative and statistically significant impact of crimes on FDI in flows. As the regular manifestations of disorder in the shape of criminal activities create an unfavorable business climate which seriously grinds down the risk-averse foreign investor’s confidence in the local investment climate and thereby dissuades FDI in Pakistan. Appropriate measures are needed to eliminate criminal activities in order to gain the confidence of foreign investor
CRIMES AND VIOLENCE IN TELEVISION NEWS AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF VIEWERS IN PAKISTAN
This research aims to study the psychological effects of thenews coverage of violent crimes on television viewers in Pakistan. Itseeks to investigate how such coverage is likely to influence the mentalhealth of the audience. Total 392 news viewers from diverse age, genderand professional backgrounds are sampled following the nonprobabilityconvenience and voluntary sampling techniques. Thesampled participants are investigated over a period of six months (i.e.from June 2016 to December 2016) through a carefully-designedquestionnaire based on the Mental Health Inventory (MHI-38) to assessthe effects of excessive and concentrated news viewing. The findingsof the study indicate that there is significant positive correlationbetween the frequency and duration of mediated exposure to real-lifeviolence and mental distress which is measured in terms of anxiety, depression and emotional instability
ORGANIZATIONAL JUSTICE AND EMPLOYEE’S JOB DISSATISFACTION: A MODERATING ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL EMPOWERMENT
This investigation focuses on measuring the perception ofemployees regarding organizational justice (OJ) and jobdissatisfaction in the presence of interactive effect of psychological empowerment. The data have been collected from the employees of private universities in Lahore division using cluster sampling through random approach. The results of this investigation reveal that OJ has a negative association with the level of job dissatisfaction in the workplace. Moreover, the moderating role of psychological empowerment has weakened the negative relationship between OJ and the level of job dissatisfaction. There is scant literature found on the relationship between OJ and job dissatisfaction especially in the presence of interactive effect of psychological empowerment in the developed and the developing countries
ECONOMETRIC IMPACT OF GOVERNANCE AND TRADE LIBERALIZATION ON POVERTY: A CASE STUDY
Both reformed governance and trade liberalizationreduces poverty while instability of foreign exchange and theinflation rate causes increase in the poverty. In this study, weexamined governance and liberalisation's effect on povertyalleviation by using Time Series data. We applied Auto RegressiveDistributive Lag (ARDL) technique to conclude the empiricalresults. The econometric study revealed a statistically significantand negative effect of governance and trade liberalization onpoverty alleviation. This study will assist the government to makecomprehensive policies for poverty alleviation, especially forPakistan
Quality of School Work Life of Public School Teachers: Cases from Turkey and Pakistan
The Quality of Work life (QWL) is the employees’ feeling or perception of being comfortable with their work. The objective of the present study was to compare Quality of School Work Life (QSWL) of public school teachers from Turkey and Pakistan. A QSWL scale developed by Ilgan, Ata, Zepeda and Ozu-Cengiz (2014) having 30 items was used as the research instrument. The sample included 995 Turkish teachers (from 8 cities) and 716 Pakistani teachers (from 5 cities of Punjab). Reliability coefficient of QSWL scale was 0.81. Further, five subscales within the QSWL tools were identified through its exploratory factor analysis. On all these 5 subscales of QSWL (when analysed separately), Turkish and Pakistani teachers differed significantly in their perceptions; however, they were found appreciating similar QSWL in the aggregate analyses. In detailed analyses of various subgroups only female teachers from Pakistan were found better on QSWL than their Turkish counterparts
Industrial Trends in Development of Target Mapping Interface for Passive Radar Systems
Passive emitter location systems have a wide range of applications most importantly in military due to its stealth and precise location capability of threats. Two approaches are followed for emitter location estimation, either to use a single mobile detection system or to use multiple static platforms for signal reception. Direction/angle of arrival and various range estimation techniques allows target localization. Mapping interfaces are used to provide a visual interpretation to the mathematical results. In case of multiple platform systems the mapping module also provides triangulation capability. In this paper we have discussed various trends that are persisting in the form of features incorporated in the target mapping modules, different techniques to extract the information from the Passive emitter location system and to bring it on the visual panel. Various passive emitter systems have been considered and their target mapping modules are compared with respect to different benchmarks
