A Love That Harms: Violent Love Imagery in Hadewijch of Brabant and the Influence of Richard of Saint Victor
That medieval women mystics utilized violent imagery in regards to Love, and, subsequently, their union with it, is well established in the scholarly literature. The approaches to this imagery differ in their conceptions and approaches to the women: some approach via the influence of courtly literature and thus see it as an expression of a literary genre; others apply more modern critiques, seen in feminist and gender theory approaches, where, usually following Foucault, the emphasis is on how the language effects or disrupts medieval power structures; others approach the women from a historical lens, placing the women’s language as an offshoot of social currents within what is often defined as medieval humanism. Yet what is often missing is an approach to these women on the grounds of the study they believed they were undertaking: theology. This paper seeks to attend to this gap, though in a limited scope, through the figure of Hadewijch of Brabant and her theological grounding of violent love found within Richard of St. Victor’s De quatuor gradibus violentae caritatis (Four Degrees of Violent Love). While not disputing many of the conclusions of previous scholarship, which this author holds to be true in most instances, this paper seeks to resituate the writings of this 13th century Beguine, within the context of medieval theology stemming from Richard of St. Victor, allowing for a recognition of nuances in her position that are often overlooked
Cold Stress Mechanisms in Asian Rice Subspecies and Overexpression of OsUBC7 for Enhancing Rice Cold Tolerance
By 2050, the projected 9.7 billion global population will increase food demand, especially for staple crops. Climate change, with extreme temperature fluctuations, heavily impacts cold-sensitive Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown in tropical and subtropical areas. Therefore, understanding the response mechanisms of two Asian rice subspecies, japonica and indica, which have distinctive tolerance to cold stress, becomes important for improving crop cold tolerance. Hence, this study tested our hypotheses to address how japonica can tolerate cold exposure better than indica: (1) japonica selectively adjusts antioxidant activities to counter reactive oxygen species (ROS), while indica rapidly increases antioxidant activities early; (2) japonica increases antioxidants to prevent damage after prolonged exposure, while indica fails to do so; (3) japonica slows water uptake to sustain minimal photosynthesis during cold, while indica’s uptake mechanisms are compromised; (4) Overexpression of OsUBC7, a ubiquitination protein, improves cold tolerance in cold sensitive rice accession. To test these hypotheses, this study investigates the enzymatic antioxidant activities and water uptake strategies employed by both subspecies under different cold treatments. Results reveal distinctive strategies in managing ROS and antioxidant activities, with japonica exhibiting fluctuating antioxidant activities to potentially activate defense pathways, while indica demonstrates rapid but possibly excessive and expensive ROS scavenging responses. Moreover, contrasting water uptake patterns are observed, with indica accessions experiencing significant reductions under cold, in contrast to japonica moderate declines, suggesting relative outcomes. Furthermore, this study explores the role of the cold candidate gene OsUBC7 in cold stress responses and productivity. Overexpression of OsUBC7 in cold sensitive accession enhances plant resilience to cold stress by increasing growth rate, sugar metabolism, and chlorophyll content, ultimately contributing to more efficient recovery and higher survivability. Additionally, OsUBC7 shows potential involvement in flowering and yield, suggesting promising roles in productivity. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the complex response mechanisms of Asian rice subspecies to cold stress, emphasizing the importance of ROS perception and management, water uptake strategies, and genetic factors for improving cold stress tolerance. The findings provide insights into the adaptive strategies of the two subspecies and help develop effective strategies to improve crop cold tolerance in fluctuating environments
Burn Cost Modeling for Surface Grinding Optimization
Surface grinding plays a pivotal role in the machining industry, constituting roughly 25% of all machining operations worldwide. Its precision and efficiency are crucial, particularly in sectors requiring high-quality surface finishes, such as aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing. For thermal damage prevention, traditional approaches to parameter selection use thresholds to exclude burn-prone parameters. However, by omitting the cost of burn, the threshold-exclusion strategy yields outcomes that fail to reflect the true costs of grinding. This dissertation introduces a novel burn cost model that transcends these limitations, offering a more nuanced and cost-effective approach to managing grinding burn. The burn cost model presented here addresses the shortcomings of traditional burn avoidance techniques by estimating the actual costs associated with grinding burn. This is achieved by integrating the economic impact of burn into the overall cost of the grinding process, allowing for a more realistic evaluation of grinding cost efficiency. This effectively balances competing objectives of throughput maximization and workpiece defect minimization. A grinding model is developed to explore the differences between the proposed cost model and traditional approaches on cost, speed, and quality of grinding. Eleven separate experimental runs are performed, and comprehensive models of grinding power, surface roughness, burn detection, and grinding ratio are developed. Machine learning techniques of linear regression, support vector machines, and physics-informed modeling are used to curate the modeling process. Parameter selection is defined by a cost function, several parameter constraints, and a two-stage design of rough and finish passes. Gradient descent and evolutionary algorithms are used to conduct the parameter search. In addition, the concept of burn risk probability is presented for estimating burn costs. This dissertation contributes to the field by challenging the conventional burn avoidance strategy based on burn threshold constraints. Results show the flaws of the burn threshold method and the advantages of the burn cost model in quantifying burn risks, enhancing robustness to parameter sensitivities, and providing value-based grinding optimization. The proposed cost framework demonstrates a more accurate reflection of the actual grinding costs. Robustness and sensitivity are also evaluated, showing a superior approach to managing and minimizing grinding costs

Reframing Burnout: Measuring “Altruistic Execution” to Understand Nurse Burnout

The purpose of this study was to evaluate construct validity, internal consistency, and convergence reliability of the Nursing Altruistic Execution Scale (NAES), a novel instrument assessing the perceived ability to help others through work. Methods:
The NAES was developed based upon a literature review examining altruistic behavior as a motivator for nursing work, with expert feedback for instrument refinement. Participants completed the NAES, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory Work-Related Burnout Scale, and Satisfaction of Employees in Health Care Survey. Exploratory factor analysis examined construct validity and factor loadings. Confirmatory factor analysis verified consistency in factor structure. Linear regression assessed for convergence reliability with burnout and job satisfaction. Results:
The sample included 843 acute care hospital nurses surveyed in January-March 2023. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution, named altruistic engagement with work and workplace barriers to altruism. Nine instrument items were retained and demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha 0.79). There was a significant relationship between both factors of the NAES and both burnout and job satisfaction, demonstrating that greater altruistic execution is associated with lower burnout and greater job satisfaction. Conclusion:
Preliminary findings support the use of the NAES as a valid and reliable scale. Findings show there is correlation between altruistic intentions and burnout. Interventions aimed at enhancing altruistic execution may reduce nurse burnout and thereby improve retention
Rate Coefficients for Rotational State-to-State Transitions in H\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3eO + H\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e Collisions as Predicted by Mixed Quantum–Classical Theory
Aims. A new dataset of collisional rate coefficients for transitions between the rotational states of H2O collided with H2 background gas is developed. The goal is to expand over the other existing datasets in terms of the rotational states of water (200 states are included here) and the rotational states of hydrogen (10 states). All four symmetries of ortho- and para-water combined with ortho- and para-hydrogen are considered.
Methods. The mixed quantum–classical theory of inelastic scattering implemented in the code MQCT was employed. A detailed comparison with previous datasets was conducted to ensure that this approximate method was sufficiently accurate. Integration over collision energies, summation over the final states of H2, and averaging over the initial states of H2 was carried out to provide state-to-state, effective, and thermal rate coefficients in a broad range of temperatures.
Results. The rate coefficients for collisions with highly excited H2 molecules are presented for the first time. It is found that rate coefficients for rotational transitions in H2O molecules grow with the rotational excitation of H2 projectiles and exceed those of the ground state H2, roughly by a factor of two. These data enable a more accurate description of water molecules in high-temperature environments, where the hydrogen molecules of background gas are rotationally excited, and the H2O + H2 collision energy is high. The rate coefficients presented here are expected to be accurate up to the temperature of ~2000 K
Psychometric Properties of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale Among Undergraduate Nursing Students
Increasing the resilience of undergraduate nursing students is essential for the individual student\u27s well-being and the healthcare system dealing with a looming nursing shortage. Undergraduate nursing students have reported that positive thinking and positive reframing are ways of coping with exposure to suffering, but measurement of these skills remains limited in this population. This is the first study to examine the psychometric properties of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale specifically in undergraduate nursing students and in a sample that includes students from both public and private universities. Internal consistency was demonstrated with a Chronbach\u27s alpha of 0.824, convergent validity was demonstrated with correlations with measures of views of suffering and professional quality of life, and the one-factor structure was supported in a sample of 157 undergraduate nursing students. The Positive Thinking Skills Scale can be a useful tool to both assess and measure the development of positive thinking skills in undergraduate nursing students
