Safeguarding User-Centric Privacy in Smart Homes
Internet of Things (IoT) devices have been increasingly deployed in smart homes to automatically monitor and control their environments. Unfortunately, extensive recent research has shown that on-path external adversaries can infer and further fingerprint people’s sensitive private information by analyzing IoT network traffic traces. In addition, most recent approaches that aim to defend against these malicious IoT traffic analytics cannot adequately protect user privacy with reasonable traffic overhead. In particular, these approaches often did not consider practical traffic reshaping limitations, user daily routine permitting, and user privacy protection preference in their design. To address these issues, we design a new low-cost, open source user-centric defense system—PrivacyGuard—that enables people to regain the privacy leakage control of their IoT devices while still permitting sophisticated IoT data analytics that is necessary for smart home automation. In essence, our approach employs intelligent deep convolutional generative adversarial network assisted IoT device traffic signature learning, long short-term memory based artificial traffic signature injection, and partial traffic reshaping to obfuscate private information that can be observed in IoT device traffic traces. We evaluate PrivacyGuard using IoT network traffic traces of 31 IoT devices from five smart homes and buildings. We find that PrivacyGuard can effectively prevent a wide range of state-of-the-art adversarial machine learning and deep learning based user in-home activity inference and fingerprinting attacks and help users achieve the balance between their IoT data utility and privacy preserving
gwid: An R Package and Shiny Application for Genome-Wide Analysis of IBD Data
Summary
Genome-wide identity by descent (gwid) is an R package developed for the analysis of identity-by-descent (IBD) data pertaining to dichotomous traits. This package offers a set of tools to assess differential IBD levels for the two states of a binary trait, yielding informative and meaningful results. Furthermore, it provides convenient functions to visualize the outcomes of these analyses, enhancing the interpretability and accessibility of the results. To assess the performance of the package, we conducted an evaluation using real genotype data derived from the SNPs to investigate rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility from the Marshfield Clinic Personalized Medicine Research Project.
Availability and implementation
gwid is available as an open-source R package. Release versions can be accessed on CRAN (https://cran.r-project.org/package=gwid) for all major operating systems. Efficient Synthesis of Thiazole-Fused Bisnoralcohol Derivatives as Potential Therapeutic Agents
Thiazole derivatives are known for a wide range of therapeutic properties. Bisnoralcohol is an inexpensive natural product obtained by the biodegradation of sterols. This article describes an efficient synthesis of a library of thiazole-fused bisnoralcohol derivatives. These novel compounds have been studied for their antineoplastic and antibacterial properties, which led to the discovery of hit compounds with therapeutic potential. The antibacterial compound is noncytotoxic and nonhemolytic against cancer cell lines and sheep red blood cells, respectively. Several of the antineoplastic compounds showed activity against human cancer cell lines with growth inhibition at submicromolar concentration
Smaller Total and Subregional Cerebellar Volumes in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Mega-Analysis by the ENIGMA-PGC PTSD Workgroup
Although the cerebellum contributes to higher-order cognitive and emotional functions relevant to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prior research on cerebellar volume in PTSD is scant, particularly when considering subregions that differentially map on to motor, cognitive, and affective functions. In a sample of 4215 adults (PTSD n = 1642; Control n = 2573) across 40 sites from the ENIGMA-PGC PTSD working group, we employed a new state-of-the-art deep-learning based approach for automatic cerebellar parcellation to obtain volumetric estimates for the total cerebellum and 28 subregions. Linear mixed effects models controlling for age, gender, intracranial volume, and site were used to compare cerebellum volumes in PTSD compared to healthy controls (88% trauma-exposed). PTSD was associated with significant grey and white matter reductions of the cerebellum. Compared to controls, people with PTSD demonstrated smaller total cerebellum volume, as well as reduced volume in subregions primarily within the posterior lobe (lobule VIIB, crus II), vermis (VI, VIII), flocculonodular lobe (lobule X), and corpus medullare (all p-FDR \u3c 0.05). Effects of PTSD on volume were consistent, and generally more robust, when examining symptom severity rather than diagnostic status. These findings implicate regionally specific cerebellar volumetric differences in the pathophysiology of PTSD. The cerebellum appears to play an important role in higher-order cognitive and emotional processes, far beyond its historical association with vestibulomotor function. Further examination of the cerebellum in trauma-related psychopathology will help to clarify how cerebellar structure and function may disrupt cognitive and affective processes at the center of translational models for PTSD

This paper introduces an activity that uses ChatGPT to help students practice their role playing sales skills. The benefits of using this AI chatbot for role play training include allowing students to practice when it’s convenient and have the ability to react to a chatbot taking on personas of different buyer types. Survey results demonstrate the effectiveness of this training method for both role play training and general familiarity with ChatGPT
Clear Masks Do Not Prevent Gains During Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing Treatment: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Pilot Study
Purpose:
This study aimed to determine the outcomes and impact of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) treatment when clear vinyl masks were worn. DTTC is one of the few evidence-based treatments for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Given that DTTC relies on visual, auditory, and tactile cues, it was unknown if treatment gains would be demonstrated when masks were worn and how masking would impact the therapy experience for clinicians and caregivers. Method:
A sequential mixed methods design was used to study the efficacy of DTTC treatment in children with CAS when clear masks were worn. The quantitative phase used a multiple-baseline across-participants design. Four children (each 4 years of age) participated in the treatment protocol in which 24 sessions of DTTC were provided over 8 weeks while clear vinyl face masks were worn by participants and clinicians. Whole word accuracy on treated items and generalization to easy and hard untreated items were assessed during baseline, treatment, and follow-up. Semistructured interviews were conducted with clinicians and caregivers following treatment to explore the experience of masks being worn during treatment. Qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis. Results:
Three children completed the treatment protocol. Visual and statistical analyses revealed that two participants demonstrated significant treatment effects, with one also demonstrating generalization. The remaining participant demonstrated marginal treatment gains. Qualitative findings revealed two main themes: “mask wearing was inconvenient but did not prevent therapy gains” and “in-person therapy with face masks was preferable to teletherapy.” Conclusions:
Masks did not prohibit treatment gains during DTTC therapy, with treatment effects of varying degrees shown for the three participants who completed the protocol. Together, quantitative and qualitative results indicate that mask wearing was, for most, a minor inconvenience that did not substantially interfere with the efficacy of DTTC treatment
Stress Biology: Complexity and Multifariousness in Health and Disease
Preserving and regulating cellular homeostasis in the light of changing environmental conditions or developmental processes is of pivotal importance for single cellular and multicellular organisms alike. To counteract an imbalance in cellular homeostasis transcriptional programs evolved, called the heat shock response, unfolded protein response, and integrated stress response, that act cell-autonomously in most cells but in multicellular organisms are subjected to cell-nonautonomous regulation. These transcriptional programs downregulate the expression of most genes but increase the expression of heat shock genes, including genes encoding molecular chaperones and proteases, proteins involved in the repair of stress-induced damage to macromolecules and cellular structures. Sixty-one years after the discovery of the heat shock response by Ferruccio Ritossa, many aspects of stress biology are still enigmatic. Racial Discrimination Increases the Risk for Nonremitting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Traumatically Injured Black Individuals Living in the United States
Traumatic, life-threatening events are experienced commonly among the general U.S. population, yet Black individuals in the United States (i.e., Black Americans) exhibit higher prevalence rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and more severe symptoms than other populations. Although empirical research has noted a range of symptom patterns that follow traumatic injury, minimal work has examined the role of racial discrimination in relation to PTSD symptom trajectories. The current study assessed racial discrimination and PTSD symptom trajectories at 6 months postinjury across two separate samples of traumatically injured Black Americans (i.e. emergency department (ED)–discharged and hospitalized). Identified PTSD symptom trajectories largely reflect those previously reported (i.e., ED: nonremitting, moderate, remitting, and resilient; hospitalized: nonremitting, delayed, and resilient), although the resilient trajectory was less represented than expected given past research (ED: 55.8%, n = 62; hospitalized: 46.9%, n = 38). Finally, higher racial discrimination was associated with nonremitting, ED: relative risk ratio (RR) = 1.32, hospitalized: RR = 1.23; moderate, ED: RR = 1.18; and delayed, hospitalized: RR = 1.26, PTSD symptom trajectories. Overall, the current findings not only emphasize the inimical effects of racial discrimination but also demonstrate the unique ways in which race-related negative events can impact PTSD symptom levels and recovery across time
Family Firms\u27 Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions
We evaluate the link between family ownership and cross-border investment behavior. By analyzing a sample of 2000 large U.S. acquirers between 2001 and 2016, we empirically show that family firms are less active in the international market for corporate control. Unlike non-family firms, family firms generate positive cross-border acquisition returns. Our results also suggest that target country conditions and acquirer financing constraints influence the link between family ownership and cross-border acquisitiveness as well as its valuation consequences. Overall, we find evidence to indicate that reduced shareholder-manager agency conflicts in family firms result in value enhancing cross-border investment behavior
