Evaluating Surgical Approaches for Hemimandibular Hyperplasia Associated with Osteochondroma: A Systematic Literature Review
Background/Objectives: Hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) associated with osteochondroma presents complex challenges in maxillofacial surgery, including facial asymmetry, occlusal instability, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Surgical interventions vary widely in approach and outcomes, underscoring the need for a systematic evaluation of effectiveness. This systematic review assesses the effectiveness of surgical approaches for managing HH associated with osteochondroma, focusing on techniques including condylectomy, orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis, total joint replacement (TJR), and genioplasty. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies published from 2000 to 2023. Eligibility criteria were based on the PICO framework, with primary outcomes evaluated for facial symmetry, occlusal correction, mandibular function, and recurrence rates. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool assessed study quality, while the GRADE framework evaluated the certainty of evidence. This review was not registered due to exclusion criteria for certain dental topics in PROSPERO. Results: Of 145 studies identified, 18 met inclusion criteria, totaling 214 patients. High and low condylectomy both effectively corrected asymmetry, with high condylectomy reducing recurrence risk but often requiring reconstruction. Orthognathic surgery, combined with condylectomy, significantly enhanced facial symmetry and occlusal function. Distraction osteogenesis proved valuable for mandibular lengthening in cases of severe deformities, while TJR offered definitive solutions for extensive joint involvement. Genioplasty corrected chin asymmetry, contributing to improved facial balance. Limitations included small sample sizes and variable follow-up durations. Conclusions: Surgical approaches tailored to individual patient needs show effectiveness in treating HH associated with osteochondroma, achieving functional and esthetic outcomes. Future studies should prioritize larger cohorts and standardized follow-up protocols to better assess long-term efficacy. Advances in 3D surgical planning and individualized treatment strategies show promise for optimized patient-specific care
Interpersonal Synchronization: Neural Connections in the Emotion System Moderated by Emotion Regulation
Relationships are integral to personal development, providing the foundation for building strong emotional connections through shared experiences and mutual support. Emotion regulation (ER) plays a critical role in these processes, specifically interpersonal ER, which significantly influences how emotions are experienced and their physiological impacts. For instance, neural mechanisms like brain-to-brain synchronization facilitate social engagement and deeper connections through shared rhythmic responses during interactions. Synchronization involves aligning emotional states—including subjective experiences, behaviors, and physiological responses—which is essential for interpersonal emotion regulation. This process maintains the emotional balance and physiological homeostasis, reflecting both adaptive and maladaptive influences within relationships. This study explores how interpersonal ER affects friendship quality by examining the neural correlates of emotional connections and synchronization. Participants included friend dyads (N = 61) who engaged in questionnaires, emotional and neural measurements, and an interaction session. Our findings initially indicated no significant relationships between emotional and neural synchronization and overall friendship quality, suggesting these factors alone do not predict the strength of friendships. Similarly, no direct correlation was found between interpersonal ER and friendship quality. However, exploratory analyses identified significant relationships within specific friendship functions and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies. First, specific friendship functions (i.e., self-validation and emotional security) were notably influential for fostering positive neural connections while disclosing personal experiences. Additionally, emotional security was positively related to friends’ reliance on interpersonal ER strategies, and the function of seeking help was specifically associated with reliance on friends for perspective-taking. Furthermore, the use of social modeling was strongly linked to neural connections during these exchanges, suggesting friends who engage in social modeling experience increased synchronization. Together, our results revealed that interpersonal ER significantly enhances neural synchronization during emotional interactions. These findings highlight the complex interplay between interpersonal ER and synchronization mechanisms within friendships. Additionally, specific interpersonal dynamics are important in shaping emotional experiences, such as the functions of emotional security and help facilitate friends’ ability to regulate each other’s emotions. Our study demonstrates that reliance on friends for emotional support and regulatory strategies is crucial to friendships, reinforcing how interpersonal support enhances the depth of social connections
Persistence and Evolution of \u3cem\u3ePseudomonas aeruginosa\u3c/em\u3e Following Initiation of Highly Effective Modulator Therapy in Cystic Fibrosis
Today, more than 90% of people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) are eligible for the highly effective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulator therapy called elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) and its use is widespread. Given the drastic respiratory symptom improvement experienced by many post-ETI, clinical studies are already underway to reduce the number of respiratory therapies, including antibiotic regimens, that pwCF historically relied on to combat lung disease progression. Early studies suggest that bacterial burden in the lungs is reduced post-ETI, yet it is unknown how chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa populations are impacted by ETI. We found that pwCF remain infected throughout their upper and lower respiratory tract with their same strain of P. aeruginosa post-ETI, and these strains continue to evolve in response to the newly CFTR-corrected airway. Our work underscores the continued importance of CF airway microbiology in the new era of highly effective CFTR modulator therapy
Remotely Sensed Imagery Reveals Animal Feeding Operations Increase Downstream Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus
In this paper, we use remotely sensed imagery to identify the location and size of animal feeding operations in the Maumee River Watershed, a key drainage area to Lake Erie\u27s Western Basin, which has recently experienced severe harmful algal blooms. We then estimate the relationship between the intensity of animal feeding operations in the watershed and surface water body concentrations of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), the pollutant most responsible for algal growth. We find that stream reaches with relatively larger increases in upstream animal feeding exposure experience significantly higher increases in concentrations of DRP. The average marginal upstream animal feeding operation in the watershed increases downstream DRP concentrations by between 10% and 15%. In contrast, when restricting the analysis to include only permitted operations, coefficient estimates are practically zero and statistically insignificant. Our work presents evidence that the increasing intensity of animal feeding operations contributes to water quality problems. Permitting and identification of animal feeding operations is therefore important for managing runoff and correctly attributing the causes of excess nutrients in surface water bodies

Rectifying Harm Through Care-Based Practices: How Journalists Might Tend to Disengaged Communities
Journalists struggle to engage with disengaged communities, especially conservative and BIPOC groups. In this research, we suggest that an ethic of care, born from developmental psychology, can be a strategy for trust building. Using a multi-phased, multi-method approach through interviews, surveys, and a focus group, we found that community members believe journalists must be more careful and intentional with cultural and political language relating to ideology, racial identity, and sexual orientation. This study shows that journalists must address harm by contending with negative news experiences, nuancing labels and language associated with their communities, and adopting a combination of five care-based values (drawn from political scientist Joan Tronto): attentiveness, responsibility, competence, responsiveness, and solidarity. The findings from this applied research will be used to create training that improves relationships between newsrooms and their communities, as well as help journalists to become more receptive, flexible, and empathetic to audiences
Impact of Learning-Style-Based Education on Student Performance and Perception in Preclinical Endodontics: Part II
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate if providing supplemental learning materials aligned to students’ learning modes is equally beneficial among all modes both subjectively and objectively. Methods: IRB approval was obtained (Approval #HR-3746). Second-year dental students (n=92) enrolled in Preclinical Endodontics took Kolb Experiential Learning Profile (KELP) questionnaire to determine their learning mode: Abstract Conceptualization (AC), Active Experimentation (AE), Reflective Observation (RO), or Concrete Experience (CE). Students were assigned into groups corresponding to their learning mode. Students performed non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT) on a #9 typodont tooth and were graded to determine baseline performance (Project 1). Students were then given their learning mode and provided aligned supplemental material. Next, students performed NSRCT on a second #9 typodont tooth (Project 2) and were graded. Students completed a satisfaction survey at the completion of Project 2. Grades from the two projects were evaluated to determine if the provided supplemental material objectively improved student performance, while responses from the survey were quantified to determine subjective perception. Results: The distribution of learning modes was 41% AE, 37% RO 11% AC, and 11% CE. While mean score improvements were observed in the AE, RO, and AC groups, they did not reach statistical significance with no notable differences between groups (P \u3e 0.05). Subjectively, 78.3% of students agreed that the materials enhanced their educational experience, 75.0% affirmed they increased their understanding of concepts, and 68.9% reported greater success as result. These perceptions were uniform across all learning modes. Age and gender had no significant influence on objective or subjective outcomes. Conclusion: Providing supplemental learning material aligned with students’ learning modes improved subjective perception for all modes without significant impact on objective performance. Incorporating learning-style-based education may improve student satisfaction in a preclinical dental school setting
