Research Trends and Issues on the Relationship Between Cognitive Activities and Cognitive Functions in Older Adults
Cognitive decline in older adults significantly impacts individuals and societies. Previous research has highlighted the importance of cognitive and social activities in maintaining cognitive functions, delaying dementia onset, and improving quality of life. This review summarizes existing findings on the relationship between cognitive activities, social engagement, and cognitive reserve. Activities such as reading, puzzles, and games stimulate neuroplasticity and cognitive reserve, while social interactions mitigate isolation and promote emotional well-being. However, personal factors such as education, motivation, and health status present unresolved challenges in understanding these effects. Furthermore, as educational and lifestyle patterns evolve across generations, adapting research methods to reflect these changes is crucial. Addressing these variations will enhance the applicability of findings to future aging populations. This review underscores the importance of comprehensive analyses that integrate individual, social, and cultural factors, providing insights into approaches for promoting cognitive health in older adults.departmental bulletin pape
