An Attempt to Develop a Scale to Evaluate the Noncognitive Abilities of Students in Classes at Junior High School.
The first purpose of this study is to redefine the concept of noncognitive abilities, which are often biased due to the diversity of their characteristics, in the context of specific situations such as classes at junior high school. The second purpose is to develop a scale for evaluating noncognitive abilities based on this redefinition. In this study, a “Noncognitive Abilities Matrix” was created, using the horizontal axis to define social and emotional skills from the OECD (2018) and the vertical axis to represent the learning cycle and the diversion. This approach made it possible to establish a comprehensive definition. In the scale development process, survey items were created based on noncognitive abilities recalled by students through free description survey, and factor analysis was conducted. The analysis revealed two factors: “proactive inquiry ability” and “proactive collaboration ability.” Items related to “achieving goals” and “working with others” were extracted, while items concerning“ managing emotions” were not extracted.departmental bulletin pape
