Violence, Authority, and Redemption: Examining Two Lear’s Across Time

    Get PDF
The themes of violence, power, and redemption in two King Lear and Bond’s Lear are examined in this essay. The study’s goal is to determine how various political and cultural contexts during a given time period influence the interpretation of these themes. Shakespeare’s King Lear, written in the early 17th century, explores human suffering, justice, and the concerns of monarchical power. Edward Bond’s Lear (1971) tackles contemporary issues like war, state power, and social disintegration. The comparison illustrates how a classic text, when viewed in a different historical context, can be interpreted in multiple ways. Thematic comparison and close reading are the techniques used. Violence, power dynamics, and the question of whether the protagonists can be saved are the main topics of the analysis of significant scenes from the plays. The analysis further emphasis how King Lear portrays violence as a natural part of the tragic human condition, frequently associated with human imperfection and fate. Bond, on the other hand, highlights how oppressive and unfair social structures lead to violence. Bond’s play depicts authority as brutal and purposefully constructed, while the original portrays it as sacred. Lear is reinterpreted in the contemporary adaptation as a commentary on the violence and power of the modern world as well as a personal tragedy. This demonstrates how timeless texts can be adapted to appeal to younger audiences. Both the original and Bond’s adaptation analyse the complex struggle between existence and violence as well as the ongoing human experience of dealing with brutality, authority, and violence

    No full text
Atopic dermatitis, commonly referred to as eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by recurrent redness, itching, and irritation. Its clinical significance lies in its long-term discomfort and significant impact on an individual’s quality of life. Traditionally, the diagnosis of eczema has relied on visual examination by a dermatologist, patient interviews, and manual assessment using a clinical scoring system. Although effective, these methods are limited by interobserver variability, inconsistencies in clinical expertise, and scalability challenges. This is particularly true in settings with limited dermatology resources. These limitations underscore the need for more objective, accessible, and technology-driven diagnostic approaches. This paper reviews the evolution of eczema detection, tracing the transition from conventional clinical assessment to modern algorithm-assisted methods. It highlights advances in medical imaging, feature extraction techniques, and sophisticated deep learning models, with particular emphasis on their suitability for mobile and real-time use. Treatment strategies and non-dermatological conditions are intentionally excluded to maintain the focus on diagnostic innovation. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive analysis of historical practices, recent technological advances, existing challenges, and emerging opportunities in automated eczema detection

    Get PDF
During 2020-2022, a significant portion of the national budget was redirected to the healthcare sector for the handling of COVID-19 and economic recovery in Indonesia. This policy has resulted in delays in infrastructure development both nationally and locally. One example is the construction of a government office in Bandung. If construction resumes, investigating the level of damage to structural elements becomes crucial. In this research, the investigation of the level of damage was conducted by constructing a Digital Twin in the form of a 3D building model using the Terrestrial Lasser Scanner (TLS) BLK360, Cyclone Register 360 software, and Autodesk Recap Pro. The visual investigation results on the 3D model show the presence of 31 elements, with 39% mild damage and 61% moderate damage out of the total detected damage on columns, beams, and slabs. On the structural element, tests were conducted, with the assistance of the Non-Destructive Test (NDT) equipment, and the examination of the nominal moment capacity strength of the structural elements showed that several elements have experienced damage and a reduction in nominal moment capacity after 3 years construction delayed. On the column there was an increase in nominal moment capacity by 47 kNm and shear strength difference of 5.394 kN. On the Beam, there was a decrease in negative nominal moment capacity, where the value of M_(n^- ) actual = 187,067 kNm while the M_(n^- ) planned = 241,389 kNm. On floor slab there was a decrease in the nominal moment capacity in the x-direction M_n actual = 22,984 kNm while the M_n planned = 28,932 kNm. In the y-direction M_n actual = 24,167 kNm while the M_n planned = 22,594 kNm. Based on the investigation results, the delayed building construction can be resumed by repairing and strengthening the damaged structural elements using grouting, epoxy injection, and Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) methods

    Get PDF
This study aims to formulate digital education competency standards for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) teachers in Indonesia by adapting frameworks from the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). As digital transformation accelerates across education sectors, Indonesian TVET teachers must enhance their capabilities to meet the demands of Industry 4.0. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving a quantitative survey of 209 vocational high school teachers across West Java and qualitative focus group discussions (FGDs) with policymakers, practitioners, and digital education experts. The findings indicate that more than 70% of productive subject teachers lack sufficient digital competencies, particularly in integrating information and communication technology (ICT) into classroom practices. Teachers reported low familiarity with digital platforms, e-learning pedagogy, and assessment systems aligned with digital teaching standards. Based on these findings, the study recommends the adoption of AQF-based competency units—such as TAEDEL801, TAEDEL802, and TAELED801—within Indonesia’s National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI). Additionally, a flexible certification pathway is proposed through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), allowing teachers to gain certification based on existing experience and skillsets. These recommendations support the development of a nationally recognized and internationally aligned digital competency model. Strengthening teacher digital literacy is essential for preparing students for the digital economy and promoting cross-border professional collaboration within global TVET systems

    Get PDF
Heavy metals contamination in water body and aquatic ecosystems has significantly affects and posing serious threats to the environment, aquatic life, and public health. Due to its widespread occurence and harmful effects, adressing this issues remains a critical challege. This study explores the utilization of a widely available agricultural by-product in Malaysia such as rubber seed shells (RSS), as a raw material for producing low-cost activated carbon (AC) for heavy metal removal applications. To enhance the surface porosity and adsorbent characteristics, the RSS was chemically activated using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and carbonized. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses was carried out to characterized the rubber seed shell ras sample (raw-RSS) and rubber seed shell activated carbon (RSS-AC), respectively. The removal efficiency of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) were evaluted via batch biosorption test under varying conditions of initial concentration (200 - 800 ppm), contact time (15 - 60 min), and biosorbent dosage (0.05 - 0.20 g). Results shows that under optimum conditions of 200 ppm initial concentration, 60 minutes contact time, and 0.20 gram biosorbent dosage yielded removal efficiencies of 77.45% for Cu and 99.20% for Pb. These results highlight that rubber seed shell based activated carbon as an effective, eco-friendly biosorbent for wastewater treatment

Reaching Inaccessible Communities: Demonstration of Community-Based Solid Waste Management Sub-System in Metro Manila, Philippines

    Get PDF
In Metro Manila, Philippines, numerous communities remain inaccessible to municipal waste collection services due to narrow streets and alleys. This often leads to improper waste disposal, including non-segregation and dumping in waterways. To address this, a community-based solid waste management sub-system (CBSWMS) was demonstrated in 78 selected barangays across Manila, Pasay, Taguig, Pasig, and Pateros, utilizing the Act-Learn principle. The CBSWMS comprised three core components: (1) establishing a community-led SWM sub-system in inaccessible areas, facilitated by Women’s Groups (WGs) as barangay SWM partners; (2) implementing a three-tiered sub-system promoting waste segregation and diversion before final disposal; and (3) providing enabling mechanisms for effective implementation. Demonstration results indicate that sustainability mechanisms for WGs, including diverse income sources and gender-mainstreaming strategies, are crucial. Furthermore, an increased focus on segregation-at-source and adequate SWM resources (tools, equipment, and dedicated sorting/recovery spaces) are vital for the sub-system\u27s success and for increasing waste diversion rates
