Get PDFSince the abolition of apartheid in South Africa in 1994 the policies and practices of social and community development has gained wide recognition as the most appropriate way to address inequities in South African society. As a result, a wide variety of community training programmes and models have been introduced and a great deal of resources have been invested in the training of students in community development. However, up to now the outcomes have mostly beendisappointing. Most training programmes are based on the so-called top-down “expert approach,” with deficiencies or deficits as the point of departure and an emphasis on felt needs, problems and the role of the community developer as expert. This is problematic because the concept of felt needs is inadequate for contemporary community development practice and a needs-assessment methodology is not an appropriate basis for programme design. Felt needs are products of a pastto-present orientation in which attempts are made to fix the past. Such an approach is incapable of addressing South Africa’s social and economic problems (Wade, 1989)

An underlying assumption is that a good understanding of various factors that young recidivists believe contribute to their reoffending will help to guide and inform early therapeutic and statutory interventions designed to help them and their families so as to prevent re-offences from occurring

Get PDFEstablished within the Faculty of Theology at the University of Stellenbosch in 2001, the Unit for Religion and Development Research (URDR)3 has embarked on a major initiative to research the social development needs of local communities and empower the faith-based organisations (FBOs) – churches and faith-based NGOs – in those communities towards self-reliant sustainable social development activity and outcomes (URDR web page). In particular, the work of the Unit proceeds from the understanding that resolving the majority of problems related to poverty in South Africa lies in carrying out two steps. The first is that one needs to gather data on the problem, and the problem must have a human face. The second step is networking, empowering and motivating all relevant parties in a society to address the problem. This problem can be solved only with strong input from grassroots level, where local communities are part and parcel of a participatory action process (Hendriks, Erasmus & Mans, 2004:381)

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIBS AND NATURE TOURISM: A SOUTH AFRICA CASE STUDY
Get PDFAlmost seven percent of the total population of South Africa are disabled, according toStatistics South Africa. Of this group, 21% are physically disabled. A lack of recreationalopportunities is listed as one of the major sources of stress for this group. The accessibility ofparks and reserves in the Limpopo Province for wheelchair-bound people is investigated inthis case study. The province has a rich natural heritage as well as an abundance of wildernessareas, and although ecotourism already plays an important role in the economic developmentof the province, it is still under-utilised. Given the absence of rain and the moderatetemperature in winter, the Limpopo Province is one of the most suitable in South Africa foroutdoor recreational activities during the winter months. To evaluate parks and reserves in theprovince in terms of their accessibility to people with disabilities, especially those confined towheelchairs, a model was developed with a set of criteria against which tourism venues couldbe tested. Values ranging from 3 for full accessibility to O for total inaccessibility wereallocated and used to evaluate the parks and reserves in the study area. An average value wascalculated for each venue. These averages were finally tested against the accessibility index todetermine the extent to which the park or reserve is accessible to people with disabilities
