THE LEARNING OF SEXUAL ABUSE PREVENTION CONCEPTS AND THE RELIABILITY OF THE CKAQ-RIII IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT

    Get PDF
Prevention is said to be better than cure and while no one could disagree with this sentiment in theory, there seems to be some difficulty in implementing it in practice. Western society embraces the romantic vision that children should simply be “children”. A child‟s obligation, it seems, is to be happy. However, the experiences of children in developing countries subvert the modern, mythologized understandings of childhood. Childhood should be a period of innocence, but sadly some children think that the abuse they experience is a normal part of childhood

PROFESSIONALISM, POSTMODERN ETHICS AND THE GLOBAL STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training (hereafter referred to as “the document”) that was adopted by the General Assemblies of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) in October 2004 was born out of several small and big compromises. As Chair of the Global Standards Committee, I remain ambivalent about some of the processes and the product. As pointed out previously (Williams & Sewpaul, 2004), despite the best attempts at consultation and ensuring representation of different voices, they remained flawed, especially when working on a document that is supposed to cover worldwide processes and representation. On being asked to Chair the Global Standards Committee my reaction was that it was a preposterous andover-ambitious goal, with my biggest fear being that it would reinforce a Western hegemony and reproduce Western professional imperialism in social work education and practice. I was informed that because I understood the sensitivities and complexities of such an endeavour, I would be suited to lead the process

YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW: IS SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISION IN SOUTH AFRICA KEEPING UP?

    Get PDF
The recruitment and retention strategy of the Department of Social Development (2006:23)postulates that there is a “lack of structured supervision and poor quality supervisors, whothemselves also lack capacity to conduct professional supervision” in South Africa. Pieterse(1961), one of the first authors on supervision in South Africa, made similar claims close tofive decades ago. These two comments give rise to the question: has social work in SouthAfrica been practising supervision over the past five decades beyond historical bureaucraticdiscourses, and has it engaged with changing global, local and personal contexts to develop andsustain critically responsive practices? In other words: is social work supervision in SouthAfrica keeping up with the times? By addressing this question, this paper seeks to respond tothe call of the recruitment and retention strategy document (Department of SocialDevelopment, 2006) to evaluate current supervision practices. In this attempt the paper reportson research, drawing on an historical analysis of the international and local development ofsocial work supervision and on a case study of current supervision practices in an NGOenvironment, in order to recommend a context-specific conceptual framework for futuresupervision practices. This paper thus aims to examine the interplay between the historicaldevelopment, current practices and future challenges of social work supervisio

GENDER, RACE AND STRESS AMONGST WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT

    Get PDF
For decades a patriarchal system precluded women from having a legal or political identity, andthe legislation and attitudes supporting a patriarchal society provided the model for slavery. Bythe middle of the 20th century the emphasis had shifted from the oppression of women toestablishing social and economic equality in the work and family sphere, and the women’smovement that sprung up during the 1960s began to argue that women were oppressed bypatriarchal structures. Theories to explain how gender and racial inequalities in managementhave their roots in ideologies based on gender and racial differences, and feminist theoreticalconcepts of patriarchy challenge these inequalities. They do this by challenging concepts ofgender, race, the family and the unequal division of labour underpinned by a theory ofpatriarchy that has come to reveal how it operates to subordinate women and privilege men, often at women’s expense. Thus patriarchy operates to achieve and maintain the gender andracial inequalities essential for the subordination of women. Another factor that impedes femalemanagers’ access to top-level jobs is women’s own career strategies and ambivalent attitudetowards a “masculine type” career orientation characterised by competition over power. Thisambivalent attitude can be attributed to the tensions felt by female managers endeavouring tomaintain a balance between professional and family responsibility

    NOTES FROM PRACTICE/UIT DIE PRAKTYK

I am an adoptive mother, and being a mother is one of the central aspects of my identity … Iam not sure if there is a difference in identity between biological mother and adoptive mother, for I have not been a biological mother. What I do know is that my daughter and I share a bondand a love that would stand the test of time of any parent-child relationship. I have an equalfaith that she is as unconditionally loved by her father, Paul, who risked breaking conventionalstereotypes about masculinity in the way he cared for her – from clinic visits, changing diapers, bathing, dressing and feeding and carrying her on his back, and swaying her to sleep especiallywhen the ugly pains of colic brought on uncontrollable crying. He was the constant in her lifewhenever my work required travelling. Yet it was a love that would be marred by fear as shegrew up. If he could, he would have denied the biological parents out of existence – not out ofvindictiveness, but for the sheer pain of loving in fear … and if it were left entirely up to him,he would have chosen not to tell at all

Though Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS ) has been with us for years, noproblem facing modern society has left so many questions unanswered, or has continued toproduce such complex and unexplained issues as those surrounding AIDS and the probablecauses of the disease (Cawyer & Smith-Dupré, 1995; Freeman, 2004). Although society isinundated with campaigns, information systems and organisations involved in the prevention ofthe illness, thousands of people are still infected with AIDS and their families “are often facedwith hostility and ostracism and rejection by their communities, rather than being supported”(Cawyer & Smith-Dupré, 1995:243; Glick & Sahn, 2004)

ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR FIRST-YEAR SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

    Get PDF
Students in their first year face the great challenge of transition from school to university, where independent and self-directed learning is called for. Students must navigate multifacetedlife adaptations – physical ones such as moving away from home, and psychological ones suchas moving into young adulthood, from the familiarity of the homogeneous school environmentto the heterogeneous culture of the university, often from rural to urban, to a different language,to mixing with diverse race groups. Moving from the control, protection and predictability ofschool life, learners are free for the first time to test their autonomy and experiment withchoices. Equally, the challenge of providing the best teaching and learning to this group restswith the educators in first year
