Betroubare statistieke oor die voorkoms van seksuele misbruik onder kinders in Suid-Afrika is moeilik verkrygbaar, maar daar word na beraming 500 000 kinders elke jaar seksueel misbruik (Salzwedel, 2006:22). Dieselfde outeur verwys na skattings van Child Line South Africa, waarvolgens 33% van alle meisies en 16% van alle seuns in Suid-Afrika seksueel misbruik word, voor die ouderdom van 18 jaar. POWA (People Opposed to Women Abuse) beraam dat een uit vier meisies (25%) en een uit vyf seuns (20%) seksueel misbruik word, voor die ouderdom van 16 jaar. Get PDFThe historical roots of the supervision of social workers in South Africa can be traced back to the year when the country first became a Republic (Pieterse, 1961). An official definition of social work supervision was provided ten years later (Vaktaalkomitee vir Maatskaplike Werk, 1971) and it was only another decade later that supervision was presented as a postgraduate course at some universities (Hoffmann, 1987). Academics such as Botha (1985), De Bruyn (1985), Hoffmann (1987) and Pelser (1985) played a significant role in conceptualising and theorising supervision as an important and essential activity in social work. In due course the transition to a new political dispensation and welfare system in the country in the 1990s led to, inter alia, a “brain drain” of supervision expertise (Engelbrecht, 2006), which was counteracted by the Department of Social Development in the first decade of the new millennium by means of a recruitment and retention strategy, and by declaring social work a scarce skill (Department of Social Development, 2006)

To achieve this, we strive to facilitate deep learning among students – the kind of learning that enables students to locate themselves in their learning (Collins & Van Breda, 2010), to construct personal meaning (Clare, 2007). A deep learning approach, Marton and Säljö (1976) argue, involves sense making and having multiple understandings of our world, while a surface learning approach involves rote learning or memorisation of facts. Entwistle and Ramsden (1983) add a third approach known as a strategic learning approach, which entails students purposefully managing their time, study methods and developing an awareness of assessment processes

Get PDFAccording to the United Nations Palermo Protocol (2000:14), child trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of children through threats, force, coercion, abduction, fraud and/or deception. Child trafficking takes many different forms. Some children are forcibly abducted, others are tricked and still others opt to be trafficked, seduced by the promise of earnings, but unaware of the level of exploitation they will go through at the end of the recruiting chain. Child trafficking always involves a journey, whether within the country or across the border. At the final destination trafficked children become part of the underworld of criminality and illegality into which they are plunged (United Nations Children Fund, 2005:49)
