Get PDF This article provides an overview of factors contributing to elder abuse and neglect within the informal caregiving setting from the perspective of ecological theory. This theory offers a deeper understanding of the complexity of elder abuse by considering the interactions that take place across a number of interrelated systems as well as the multiple risk factors that contribute to elder abuse and neglect. Researchers, policy makers and practitioners need to develop awareness of the risk factors regarding elder abuse and neglect, and to develop appropriate interventions in response to elder abuse and neglect
SUBSTANCE ABUSE, DEPENDENCE AND THE WORKPLACE: A LITERATURE OVERVIEW
Get PDFSubstance abuse and dependence among the employed have massive cost implications for South Africa. Employers are legally obliged to provide opportunities for the treatment of substance dependence before dismissal is considered. Problem areas are the following: inadequate identification of employees with substance-abuse problems, infrequent treatment referrals, and overlooking of substance abuse in the workplace. This article attempts to address these issues by providing an overview of literature dealing with the problem of substance abuse and dependence in the workplace. Addressing this problem calls for specialist intervention measures, which are discussed in the article
SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCE AND MANAGEMENT OF COUNTERTRANSFERENCE
Get PDFCountertransference – the emotional reactions that clients trigger in practitioners – can, if not understood or managed, result in unethical conduct and harm to clients, practitioners and the profession. A solid understanding of countertransference theory, insight into one’s own countertransference reactions, and skills in managing countertransference appropriately are vital components of ethical and effective social work practice. This paper reports on a small qualitative study among undergraduate social work students. Results reveal that countertransference is indeed experienced by students, but poorly understood and sometimes inappropriately managed. Recommendations for social work education, field instruction and supervision are provided

VALIDATING THE EVIDENCE OF VIOLENCE IN PARTNER RELATIONSHIPS WITH REGARD TO XHOSA AFRICAN WOMEN
Get PDFThis article reports on how African women understand the forms and meaning of violence in partner relationships. The findings suggest that many African women experience physical, emotional and economic abuse. Some of the reasons for abuse which emerged include a patriarchal system, alcohol abuse, infidelity and failure to support children financially. The influence of Xhosa African practices on violent partner relationships was explored. The study indicates a need for ethnically sensitive interdisciplinary programmes for social service practitioners, and an effective, accessible legal system for rural women to reduce incidences of abuse.

Get PDFThis article focuses on the psychosocial needs of adolescent girls who present with suicidal behaviour, which can be attributed to a variety of circumstances. Qualitative interviewing was done with participants until data-saturation was achieved. The overarching psychosocial needs of participants were discussed in three main themes with specific sub-themes. The first theme focuses on love and acceptance; it has three sub-themes, namely a negative self-concept, parental rejection and peer group rejection. Theme two focuses on communication, with the expression of emotions, quality time and trust as sub-themes. The third theme discusses a certain future, with career choices and hope as sub-themes

Get PDFSubsequent to the research conducted by Schenck (2003, 2004) describing problems that rural social workers experience and to contemporary reports in the printed media echoing similar sentiments, the researchers decided to embark on a research project aimed at revisiting and exploring the challenges related to working conditions experienced by social workers practising in rural areas. Thirty-two rural areas were engaged in this study. The findings indicated that the status quo on the subject of the working condition-related challenges and the problems experienced by social workers practising in rural areas remains and that the mentioned challenges seem to be specifically related to context, service organisation and clients

Although the focus is primarily on the micro level, we acknowledge the impacts of mezzo- and macro-level factors on family and individual functioning.
