Health Engagement Learning Platform: The HELP Toolkit: A practical resource supporting consumer engagement in health policy-making
The Health Engagement Learning Platform (HELP) Toolkit is a supplementary resource developed to support the implementation of the National Consumer Engagement Strategy for Health and Wellbeing (the Strategy) and inform consumer engagement activities undertaken by policymakers across a variety of settings. The primary target audience of this Toolkit is policy-makers, however, it can also be used as a resource by consumers and consumer organisations to help inform their expectations of what good practice engagement should look like. This Toolkit provides evidence and experience-based, practical guidance to assist with designing, implementing and evaluating consumer engagement activities in health policy development. This includes an overview of common engagement methods relevant to health policy-making, the essential characteristics of effective engagement and detailed checklists to support implementation of the Good Practice Guidelines and engagement Fundamentals identified in this Toolkit and associated Strategy. A range of engagement methods and approaches are described, to allow for consumer engagement processes that can be tailored to the specific circumstances, needs and preferences of different communities and population groups
The Impact of Climate Change on the Insurance Industry: Perceptions of Industry Experts and Corporate Responses
The impact of climate change is posing substantial risks for contemporary businesses and individuals. In response, insurance companies are adapting old and adopting new strategies and practices. This study aims to identify operational and structural changes that insurance companies implement in response to risks posed by climate change. The overarching goal of this study is to understand the perceptions of industry experts about how climate change impacts the insurance industry, and identify corporate responses to the pressures stemming from climate change and the rising societal awareness of its impact. Using qualitative research methods, we gathered primary data from eight interviews with senior executives involved in sustainability initiatives within the insurance industry, along with secondary data on Singapore’s three largest insurance companies. Our findings indicate that industry experts view climate change as a significant external force influencing corporate strategies and operational frameworks. Further, insurance companies are investing in environmentally friendly businesses, changing product portfolios, and developing collaboration with administrative and regulatory bodies. Implications of these findings for managers and policymakers are discussed, along with directions for future research.</p
The effect of using whiteboard animation in teaching introductory accounting concepts
The use of technology can aid learning, provided it is appropriately structured and organised. Multimedia learning theories help educators to design educational materials to optimise student learning. This study explores the effect of using whiteboard animation in teaching introductory accounting concepts using an online, between-subjects experiment (n = 521). We assigned participants to one of five experimental treatments for learning introductory accounting concepts: whiteboard animation with narration, slideshow with narration, narration only, text only, and a control group receiving no treatment. The use of whiteboard animation is associated with higher affective and effective learning outcomes compared to other experimental treatments. Furthermore, differences in effective learning outcomes (material retention) persist for one week after the initial exposure. Our findings are of particular interest to educators (including, but not limited to, accounting educators) seeking to improve student outcomes in an increasingly digital learning environment
Baroque Tendencies: The Making of Northcote House

Designed and built by David Leggett and Paul Loh—two design practitioners who operate in a fertile confluence between architecture, academia and fabrication—it represents a grand experiment in using digital manufacturing tools to transform the art and craft of construction. Both machinic and handcrafted, shockingly new and yet strangely familiar, Northcote House’s highly expressive, almost baroque form is the product of these tools, which rarely, if ever, make it outside university fabrication laboratories onto building sites.Baroque Tendencies explores how and why this house came to be. It is a manual and a manifesto. A ‘How-to of Digital Fabrication’, it details the novel techniques Leggett and Loh used to fabricate, construct and assemble the house. In the process, it shows how this blend of conventional construction practice with digital fabrication achieves efficiencies in material use, spatial organisation and positive environmental impacts. Leggett and Loh argue that their particular mode of design and construction, what they call ‘digital material practice’, is neither theory nor practice, but rather an engaged form of design research. Laying the groundwork to bypass the commercial activity exception of the Foreign State Immunities Act
Foreign state immunity is a significant principle of international law that seeks to respect the sovereignty of foreign states and reduce the risk of straining diplomaticrelationships between countries. Defining the scope of foreign sovereign immunity is important in a range of issues, including property rights, which include the treatment of items of cultural significance, human rights, acts in cyberspace,4 and application to immunityto foreign officials. Yet, what is the scope of the impact of immunity in corporate insolvency?In 2023, the New South Wales Court of Appeal found that state-owned or controlled entities, including national airlines, are afforded foreign state immunity against thecommencement of involuntary winding up proceedings, eliminating winding up as a tool for creditors to seek compensation. The court scrutinised whether the insolvency proceedings initiated by a creditor, Greylag Goose Leasing 1410 Designated Activity Co (Greylag Goose)fell within the exceptions outlined in the Foreign State Immunities Act 1985 (Cth) (the Act), which would permit such actions against a debtor that was a state-owned entity, in this case PT Garuda Indonesia. The focal point of the scrutiny was whether Garuda’s commercial operations as an airline fall outside the scope of sovereign immunity, particularly under the provisions dealing with commercial activities and insolvency
Effects of the Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence on Value Cocreation in Construction Projects: A Mixed Methods Study
Emerging technologies—blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI)—have revolutionized the operational model of construction organizations by developing a new paradigm of value cocreation within construction projects. However, it remains unclear how blockchain and AI could foster value cocreation in construction projects. Dynamic capability theory (DCT) and task-technology fit theory (TTFT) were utilized to address this knowledge gap by constructing a theoretical model that elucidates the relationship among blockchain, AI, and value cocreation in construction projects. A mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative studies, was deployed to unveil the results. A total of 296 survey responses were collected from construction professionals, and partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to assess the model. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 construction professionals to validate the study’s findings, and the grounded theory method was employed to solidify the theoretical framework. The findings indicate that blockchain has a significant positive effect on AI, and both blockchain and AI have significant positive effects on value cocreation in construction projects. Moreover, government support and task-technology fit moderate the impact of blockchain and AI on value cocreation, thereby enhancing the value cocreation of construction projects. This study not only contributes to knowledge extension by clarifying the relationship among blockchain, AI, and value cocreation in construction projects but also provides valuable insights for engineering and construction firms seeking to effectively utilize blockchain and AI
EXPRESS: Representations for face recognition
Models of human face recognition rely on the notion of representation, but rarely describe this in detail. Here, I will argue that our conception of face representations is often ‘essentialist’ – assuming that there is some fixed set of values that captures a particular person’s face. However, this conception is inadequate for the purpose of familiar face recognition, and I will suggest that representations instead need to incorporate the statistical properties of our exposure to all the faces we know, including variability and sampling. I will review findings from empirical and simulation research suggesting that the idiosyncratic properties of each perceiver results in a unique set of representations, which can be difficult to understand using traditional experimental approaches. Methodological diversity seems to offer the best route for understanding face recognition – a problem that remains stubbornly unsolved
Travel medicine and general practice
As the articles in this travel medicine edition of AJGP demonstrate, providing travel health advice is an important role for general practice. In his article on preparing patients for travel,1 Dr Michael Tong notes that most patients who seek pre-travel medical advice do so from their general practitioner (GP). This has consistently been demonstrated in studies both in Australia and other comparable countries.2 As Dr Tong points out, providing high-quality travel health advice in general practice does not simply require knowledge. It also requires a structured approach to the pre-travel consultation, use of guidelines and resources, and practice systems such as longer appointments and consultant checklists. As the COVID-19 pandemic and previous pandemics have illustrated, travel has major public health implications, and risk assessment (including public health risks) is more important than ever with re-emerging and emerging diseases and changing models of travel, such as ecotourism.
Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke Events Through Surveillance (PHASES): Evaluation of a Health Analytics System for Primary Care
Aim:National cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk guidelines recommend population-level screening and pharmacotherapy for high-risk individuals. There is no validated system for surveillance of up-to-date risk factor measurement and treatment. This study evaluated an existing health analytics system as a potential CVD surveillance system.Method:In a single Primary Health Network, Primary Sense health analytics system was evaluated as a CVD surveillance system. Errors were identified and corrected. Numbers of patients within different risk groups were identified, and proportions on appropriate therapy were reported.Results:Data transfer from general practice electronic medical record systems to Primary Sense was correct, buterrors were found regarding implementation of Australian CVD guidelines. Following corrections, outof a population of 254,357 individuals, 87,487 (34%) were eligible for CVD risk assessment. Of these, 4,199 (5%) had pre-existing CVD, 5,124 (6%) were clinically determined high-risk and 42,132 (54%) had no risk score available. Of those with a risk score available, 2,285 (6%) were high-risk. 11,608 patients had prior CVD, clinically determined high-risk or a high CVD risk score and 6,710 (58%) of these were inadequately treated.Conclusions:Health analytics systems in current use have the potential to act as surveillance systems to monitor CVD preventive care but require evaluation
Exploring smoking, vaping, and alcohol behaviours of Bond University allied health and medical students
Aim:To examine health behaviours of smoking, e-cigarette use and alcohol consumption among Bond University allied health and medical students in their first semesters.Design:Cross-sectional study.Methods:201 first semester allied health and medical students at Bond University completed the Bond Online Survey for Student Health and Wellbeing Tracking (May 2024).Results:of the 201 students surveyed, 92.0% of medicine and 91.6% of allied health students had never smoked, and 92.1% of medicine and 91.6% of allied health students had never used e-cigarettes. A total of 81.5% of students reported drinking alcohol, with most consuming less than once per month (26.1%). Among allied health and medical students, 21.0% and 26.5% (respectively) drank five or more standard alcoholic drinks when they consumed alcohol. No significant difference was found in total weekly alcohol consumption between the groups.Conclusion:Most allied health, and medical students abstain from smoking and e-cigarette use. However, many engage in risky alcohol consumption. Students enrolled in allied health and medical programs may face increased levels of stress due to demands of coursework and clinical practice, potentially influencing their engagement in these high-risk health behaviours.Key practice points:• Development of supportive educational programs that emphasise risks and provide strategies for healthier habits is important.• Integration of stress-reduction programs tailored to the unique challenges of allied health and medical students should be considered. This emphasises the need for targeted interventions to address stress and risky behaviours while promoting healthy lifestyles and behaviour
